Feasibility of using ecological momentary assessment to examine high-risk drug practices among people who inject drugs.

OBJECTIVE: People who inject drugs (PWID) experience elevated risk for HIV, overdose, and other health harms, yet most research on associated high-risk drug practices has relied on retrospective assessment. This study examined the feasibility and practicality of using ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to assess risk practices among PWID. METHOD: PWID who had injected drugs at least twice in the past week were recruited through street outreach in Honolulu, Hawaii (United States) from June 2022 to April 2024 and completed a 60-min baseline assessment and 14-day smartphone-based self-reporte

Real-Time Psychological Factors Using Ecological Momentary Assessment With Continuous Glucose Monitoring in Diabetes Mellitus: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is a tool that captures emotional states, experiences, and behaviors in real or near-real time. Concurrent EMA and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) data can provide an in-depth understanding of the impacts of psychosocial factors on momentary glucose levels. However, study methodology varies widely for EMA and CGM data collection and analysis. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aims to summarize the objectives, methodologies, and outcomes of studies analyzing concurrent biopsychosocial EMA and CGM data in diabetes. METHODS: This study was cond

Adolescent emotion polyregulation flexibility: An ecological momentary assessment of emotion regulation contingency and links to perceived success.

Adolescents often report using a repertoire of strategies to regulate their emotions. However, global characterizations of strategy use provide limited insight into the dynamic processes of everyday emotion regulation (ER). It remains unknown whether adolescents can use multiple ER strategies simultaneously within a given emotional event and adjust strategies flexibly as their emotions shift, namely, emotion polyregulation flexibility. Leveraging the Bray-Curtis dissimilarity index to quantify sequential changes in both emotions and ER strategies within and across days, we examined whether ado

Associations between social network characteristics and daily social experiences in later life: Evidence from ecological momentary assessment.

OBJECTIVES: Sociological theory posits that social networks function as enduring relational structures that constrain and enable everyday social interactions, yet empirical evidence linking network properties to real-time social exposures remains limited. To address this gap, this study examines how older adults' social networks are associated with their daily social experiences. METHODS: Using data from the Social Environment and Cognitive Health in Urban and Rural Areas (SECHURA) study, we combine egocentric network data (1,474 alters from 254 respondents) with ecological momentary assessme

Emotion regulation and state body image during daily body-exposure situations: A pilot ecological momentary assessment study.

BACKGROUND: Emotion regulation has been consistently associated with eating disorder psychopathology, yet most evidence comes from retrospective and cross-sectional studies. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) allows these processes to be examined as they unfold during daily body-exposure situations. This pilot study investigated associations among emotion regulation strategies, affect, and state body image during naturally occurring body-exposure situations and explored whether average regulatory patterns across a two-week EMA period were associated with short-term change in drive for thinn

Identifying multimodal digital features of insomnia using an app in Hong Kong: An ecological momentary assessment study.

BACKGROUND: Digital phenotyping of insomnia remains underexplored, particularly in the context of depression, despite the high comorbidity between these two conditions. This study aims to investigate the associations between insomnia and multimodal features using active data collection during awake states, including facial expressions, acoustic characteristics, and language use. METHODS: A sample of 92 participants was recruited, 39 % of them presented with clinical insomnia as measured by Insomnia Severity Index. Multimodal features were extracted from video-taped mood diaries recorded for o

Experiences and regulation of posttraumatic shame among women with interpersonal trauma histories: An ecological momentary assessment study.

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic shame-an emotion stemming from harsh attitudes about the self after trauma-is central to posttraumatic stress disorder for many women following physical or sexual assault or abuse (interpersonal trauma [IPT]). However, knowledge of how shame is experienced in daily life post-IPT (e.g., frequency, intensity, and stability) is lacking. Additionally, though some research has explored shame-specific emotion regulation (ER) or processes aimed at changing emotional responses to shame, it remains unclear which ER strategies are effective in reducing shame. METHOD: We explore

Network dynamics between digital media use and depressive symptomatology: A computational phenotyping approach using ecological momentary assessment.

BACKGROUND: Despite extensive investigation into relationships between digital media use and psychological well-being, understanding of specific temporal dynamics and underlying mechanisms remains inadequate. METHODS: This study employed intensive longitudinal methods to examine the complex network relationships between digital behavior patterns and depressive symptoms. We collected ecological momentary assessment (EMA) data from 1642 young adults (ages 18-29, 58.2 % female, 42.3 % currently enrolled in undergraduate programs) across 60 days, yielding 358,962 observations capturing smartphone

An Ecological Momentary Assessment Study of Fluctuations in Inhibitory Control and Its Predictive Validity of Alcohol Use.

INTRODUCTION: Inhibitory control is associated with reports of alcohol use in cross-sectional and lab-based research. In the current study we investigated inhibitory control using an ecological momentary assessment paradigm to investigate 'in-the-moment' relationships with alcohol consumption and other factors (e.g., location, craving, emotions) in the real-world. We hypothesized that fluctuations in inhibitory control throughout the day would predict alcohol consumption. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Heavy drinkers (N = 54: mean age = 24.30, 47 females) were asked to complete a battery of questions

How do participant preferences, expectancies, and perceptions of ecological momentary assessment impact adherence? A mixed-methods analysis.

Clinical researchers using ecological momentary assessment (EMA) methods design study protocols to optimize adherence. These decisions can sacrifice the scope, temporal granularity, and observational power of resultant data and are often based on limited empirical evidence. The present mixed-methods study queried participant preferences on EMA design and expectancies regarding a hypothetical EMA protocol (Sample 1, N = 1,495). We used a concurrent triangulation approach to analyze quantitative survey and qualitative interview data assessing implementation outcomes from a subset of Sample 1 ind

Savoring pleasure to relieve pain: An ecological momentary assessment study in patients with chronic low back pain.

As pain persists, individuals with chronic pain must draw upon resilience resources to improve physical function and emotional well-being. Leading theoretical models highlight positive emotions as central to the process of pain-related resilience. This ecological momentary assessment (EMA) study investigated the role of savoring-a positive emotion upregulation strategy-in the daily experience of pain among individuals with chronic low back pain (CLBP) who had not received prior training in savoring or other emotion regulation strategies. Of the 135 participants included in the study, 81 were m

Sleep quality, emotional moods, and cognitive outcomes among people living with HIV: An ecological momentary assessment study.

INTRODUCTION: Although studies have explored the relationship between sleep quality, mood, and cognitive outcomes among people living with HIV (PLWH), few use ecological momentary assessment (EMA) techniques to evaluate within-person associations between sleep quality and emotional/cognitive outcomes among PLWH at the day level. This study investigated the association between previous night's sleep quality and momentary psychological outcomes in participants' natural setting. METHODS: Study participants were PLWH in South Carolina who were at least 18 years old, diagnosed with HIV for at leas

Ecological Momentary Assessment of Alcohol Marketing Exposure, Alcohol Use, and Purchases Among University Students: Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The relationships between alcohol marketing exposure, alcohol use, and purchase have been widely studied. However, prospective studies examining the causal relationships in real-world settings using mobile health tools are limited. OBJECTIVE: We used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to examine both the within-person- and between-person-level effects of alcohol marketing exposure on any alcohol use, amount of alcohol use, any alcohol purchase, and frequency of alcohol purchase among university students. METHODS: From January to June 2020, we conducted a prospective cohort stu

Examining the Theoretical Framework of Behavioral Activation for Major Depressive Disorder: Smartphone-Based Ecological Momentary Assessment Study.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral activation (BA), either as a stand-alone treatment or as part of cognitive behavioral therapy, has been shown to be effective for treating depression. The theoretical underpinnings of BA derive from Lewinsohn et al's theory of depression. The central premise of BA is that having patients engage in more pleasant activities leads to them experiencing more pleasure and elevates their mood, which, in turn, leads to further (behavioral) activation. However, there is a dearth of empirical evidence about the theoretical framework of BA. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine th

Towards a precision psychiatry approach to anxiety disorders with ecological momentary assessment: the example of panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Treatments for anxiety disorders are among the most effective in psychiatry. Yet, there is considerable room for improvement. AIM: In this paper, we discuss the value of ecological momentary assessment as a research method and clinical tool. METHODS: We begin by describing ecological momentary assessment and its advantages, including the ability to collect ecologically valid information about mental disorders, in real time, in individual patients. We then illustrate the value of this approach for anxiety disorder treatment using two patients with panic disorder who completed ecol

A Laboratory Evaluation of Contextual Factors Affecting Ratings of Speech in Noise: Implications for Ecological Momentary Assessment.

OBJECTIVES: As hearing aid outcome measures move from retrospective to momentary assessments, it is important to understand how contextual factors influence subjective ratings. Under laboratory-controlled conditions, we examined whether subjective ratings changed as a function of acoustics, response timing, and task variables. DESIGN: Eighteen adults (age 21 to 85 years; M = 51.4) with sensorineural hearing loss were fitted with hearing aids. Sentences in noise were presented at 3 overall levels (50, 65, and 80 dB SPL) and 3 signal to noise ratios (0, +5, and +10 dB signal to noise ratio [SNR

Metacognitions, worry and sleep in everyday life: Studying bidirectional pathways using Ecological Momentary Assessment in GAD patients.

BACKGROUND: The metacognitive model of generalized anxiety disorder proposes that negative metacognitive beliefs are crucial in the maintenance of excessive worry. Furthermore, according to the cognitive model of insomnia, worry leads to problems falling or staying asleep and poor sleep quality. In order to test the assumed causal relationships, the present study examined the time-dependent course of negative metacognition and worry as well as worry and sleep quality, using Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA). METHOD: Negative metacognitions, worry and sleep were assessed by self-report que

Associations between retrospective versus ecological momentary assessment measures of emotion and eating disorder symptoms in anorexia nervosa.

This study examined the unique associations between eating disorder symptoms and two emotion-related constructs (affective lability and anxiousness) assessed via distinct methodologies in anorexia nervosa (AN). Women (N = 116) with full or subthreshold AN completed baseline emotion and eating disorder assessments, followed by two weeks of ecological momentary assessment (EMA). Hierarchical regressions were used to examine unique contributions of baseline and EMA measures of affective lability and anxiousness in accounting for variance in baseline eating disorder symptoms and EMA dietary restri
