Policy Pressures and Inequality: The Challenges Facing Adolescent Health in Times of Crisis.

Austerity measures following the 2007 financial crisis, along with the economic and social challenges imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, have profoundly affected the living conditions of adolescents and their families, influencing their experiences and opportunities. This study aimed to examine socioeconomic position (SEP) inequalities across various health-related conditions among adolescents aged 12 to 19 years in central Catalonia. This cross-sectional study utilized data from a cohort of high school students during the 2021-2022 academic year, comprising a sample of 9.265 students (50.8% gi

A 'new normal' following COVID-19 and the economic crisis: Using systems thinking to identify challenges and opportunities in disability, telework, and rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) that emerged in late 2019, and later become a global pandemic, has unleashed an almost unprecedented global public health and economic crisis. OBJECTIVE: In this perspective, we examine the effects of COVID-19 and identify a likely 'new normal' in terms of challenges and opportunities within the fields of disability, telework, and rehabilitation. METHODS: We use a systems thinking lens informed by recent empirical evidence and peer-reviewed qualitative accounts regarding the pandemic to identify emerging challenges, and pinpoint opportunities rela

Venezuela's public health crisis: a regional emergency.

The economic crisis in Venezuela has eroded the country's health-care infrastructure and threatened the public health of its people. Shortages in medications, health supplies, interruptions of basic utilities at health-care facilities, and the emigration of health-care workers have led to a progressive decline in the operational capacity of health care. The effect of the crisis on public health has been difficult to quantify since the Venezuelan Ministry of Health stopped publishing crucial public health statistics in 2016. We prepared a synthesis of health information, beyond what is availabl

A scoping review on the impact of austerity on healthcare access in the European Union: rethinking austerity for the most vulnerable.

BackgroundThere is consensus that the 2008 financial and economic crisis and related austerity measures adversely impacted access to healthcare. In light of the growing debt caused by the COVID-19 crisis, it is uncertain whether a period of austerity will return.ObjectiveThis study aims to provide a structured overview of the impact of austerity policies in the EU-28 zone, applied in response to the Great Recession, on access to health care for the adult population, using the five access dimensions by Levesque et al. (2013).MethodsThis study followed the PRISMA extension for Scoping Reviews gu

A reconfiguration of the sex trade: How social and structural changes in eastern Zimbabwe left women involved in sex work and transactional sex more vulnerable.

Understanding the dynamic nature of sex work is important for explaining the course of HIV epidemics. While health and development interventions targeting sex workers may alter the dynamics of the sex trade in particular localities, little has been done to explore how large-scale social and structural changes, such as economic recessions-outside of the bounds of organizational intervention-may reconfigure social norms and attitudes with regards to sex work. Zimbabwe's economic collapse in 2009, following a period (2000-2009) of economic decline, within a declining HIV epidemic, provides a uniq

Current challenges to the principles of medical law and their new interpretation.

The traditional function of the principles of medical law has been to protect the person of the patient against the use of power in health care. These principles have not generally been seen as factors which would also protect the patient economically. An analysis of the significance of the use of power in health care and a review of the field of damage sustained through erroneous procedures in the care relationship, make it possible to observe that the patient's need for legal protection is particularly great not only as regards factors related to the person, but also as regards the finances

The COVID-19 pandemic: the public health reality.

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19), while mild in most cases, has nevertheless caused significant mortality. The measures adopted in most countries to contain it have led to colossal social and economic disruptions, which will impact the medium- and long-term health outcomes for many communities. In this paper, we deliberate on the reality and facts surrounding the disease. For comparison, we present data from past pandemics, some of which claimed more lives than COVID-19. Mortality data on road traffic crashes and other non-communicable diseases, which cause more deaths each year than COVID-1

Teriparatide use during an economic crisis: baseline data from the Greek cohort of the Extended Forsteo Observational Study (ExFOS).

BACKGROUND: The Extended Forsteo Observational Study (ExFOS) is a multinational, non-interventional, prospective, observational study that aims to provide real-life data on patients with osteoporosis treated with teriparatide for up to 24 months. It includes the new indications of osteoporosis in men and glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIOP). We describe the Greek subpopulation enrolled in this study and compare it with a similar cohort from the previous European Forsteo Observational Study (EFOS). METHODS: Baseline data were collected from the Greek cohort of ExFOS. Data included demogr

Prenatal diagnosis and screening.

We have limited the scope of this article to those disorders that have already been successfully diagnosed or excluded in utero. We currently have the potential to diagnose a number of others for which the opportunity has not yet arisen. If a biochemical, morphologic, chromosomal, or DNA alteration is known for a specific condition and is likely to be expressed in one of the fetal tissues or secretions, attempt at prenatal diagnosis is reasonable. Our ability to detect the inherited disorders of the skin in utero will continue to improve both in the number of specific disorders successfully di

Changes in Public Attitudes and Perceptions about Homelessness Between 1990 and 2016.

Public attitudes on homelessness can and has influenced policies and services for homeless populations. This study surveyed national public attitudes about homelessness in the 21st century and examined changes in attitudes in the past two decades. An online survey of public attitudes about homelessness was conducted with 541 U.S. adults across 47 states in November 2016 using Amazon Mechanical Turk. Survey results were compared to two public surveys conducted in 1990. Compared to previous surveys, the current sample endorsed more compassion, government support, and liberal attitudes about home

Employee engagement: a prescription for organizational transformation.

Ivanitskaya, Glazer, and Erofeev (2009) suggest that "the most fundamental element of any organization that helps the organization to survive is the individual person" (p. 109). It is the motivation of human capital that makes a health-care organization come to life. Health-care is a unique industry; its accomplishments are directly dependent upon the competencies and technical skills of its employees. "When people in the workplace fulfill their organizational roles, then the organization thrives" (Ivanitskaya et al., 2009, p. 110). Health-care systems will require organizations that thrive an

Oculocutaneous albinism in an isolated Tonga community in Zimbabwe.

Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is a recessively inherited genetic condition prevalent throughout sub-Saharan Africa. We now describe a cluster of tyrosinase positive OCA (OCA2) cases belonging to the Tonga ethnic group living in the Zambezi valley of northern Zimbabwe. The prevalence in this region was 1 in 1000, which is four times higher than that for the country as a whole. The gene frequency for OCA2 in this population was calculated as 0.0316, with a carrier rate of 1 in 16. Molecular analysis showed that all five affected subjects from two independent families examined were found to be ho

Total healthcare budget: assigning priority and level of asset allocation to the diagnosis and management of urologic diseases.

During the past decade increasing concern has developed as to how money should best be allocated in the healthcare sector and to the different disciplines within health care. In the Western world, healthcare budgets increase dramatically each year, even during periods of economic recession. There are many reasons explaining this evolution, but publicly funded healthcare systems, as in the United Kingdom, appear to control their growth more effectively than the private systems as, for instance, in the United States. The bulk of the increase in healthcare expenditure happens to be attributed to

Control of the African trypanosomiases with special reference to land use.

There is a need to reassess the role of the trypanosomiases, both human and animal, in African ecology and economy. Withdrawal of control services from the Congo basin was followed by a resurgence of infection from ancient foci, many of them thought to have been extinguished. Successful elimination of Glossina in savanna habitats has sometimes been followed by reinvasion causing massive epizootics. Elsewhere continued recession of the tsetse fly has been followed by cattle population growth which is periodically interrupted by catastrophic pasture famines.Efficiency of control rather than larg

Real-time PCR detection of the recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa-associated c.2470insG mutation in unrelated Mexican families.

Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (R-DEB) is caused by mutations in the COL7A1 gene. The most common mutation reported in Mexican families is the c.2470insG mutation, normally detected by DNA sequencing. We report a faster and more economical high-throughput genotyping method to detect the c.2470insG mutation using specific TaqMan probes in a real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) that facilitates genotype analysis with allelic discrimination plots. Our new method correctly genotyped 45 samples that had previously been sequenced as 41 wild-type homozygous (-/-), 1 heterozygous (

Identification of a recurrent nonsense mutation in HR gene responsible for atrichia with papular lesions in two Kashmiri families.

BACKGROUND: Congenital atrichia (CA) is a rare form of irreversible alopecia with an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. This form of hair loss is mainly associated with mutations in the human hairless (HR) gene located at chromosome 8p21.3. An additional unique feature atrichia with papular lesions (APL) comprises keratin-filled cysts known as papules. The present study aimed to uncover the underlying genetic causes of APL in two consanguineous Kashmiri families. METHODS: In the present study, two consanguineous families of Kashmiri origin with APL displaying an autosomal recessive mode

A million-cow genome-wide association study of productive life in U.S. Holstein cows.

BACKGROUND: Productive life (PL) of a cow is the time the cow remains in the milking herd from first calving to exit from the herd due to culling or death and is an important economic trait in U.S. Holstein cattle. The large samples of Holstein genomic evaluation data that have become available recently provided unprecedented statistical power to identify genetic factors affecting PL in Holstein cows using the approach of genome-wide association study (GWAS). METHODS: The GWAS analysis used 1,103,641 Holstein cows with phenotypic observations on PL and genotypes of 75,282 single nucleotide po

How does 'park and ride' perform? An evaluation using longitudinal data.

The efficiency of park and ride (PnR) lots has not been investigated in serious depth in prior literature. This study examines the effect of various factors on the utilization rate of PnR lots with panel Tobit models. The examined factors consist of land use features, roadway design features, transit ridership, sociodemographic attributes, travel characteristics, policy tools, gasoline prices, and weather conditions. The data is drawn from PnR lots in King County, Washington. Results show that: (1) degree of mixed land use, road density, employment density, percentages of people aged between 1
