Ecological patterns and spatial distribution of medicinal mollusks in a freshwater ecosystem.

BACKGROUND: The Lake Taihu wetland in the Yangtze River Delta is a key freshwater ecosystem. Medicinal mollusks act as intermediate hosts for multiple parasitic diseases, yet their distribution patterns and public health implications along the northern shore of Lake Taihu remain insufficiently characterized. METHODS: Field surveys were conducted between 2022 and 2023 at 48 sampling sites in Zhushan Bay, Meiliang Bay, and Gonghu Bay. A total of 1605 mollusk samples were collected using multiple sampling methods. Species were identified morphologically, and diversity indices were calculated. Sp

Human-centered digital ecosystem: safeguarding healthcare workers' sleep, ergonomics, and occupational health.

Using Healthcare-Associated Infection (HCAI) surveillance as a representative model for high-burden administrative tasks, this Perspective argues that healthcare worker fatigue, sleep disruption, and poorly integrated digital systems threaten both occupational health and health-system resilience. Crucially, these problems should be addressed as failures of work-system design rather than deficits in individual resilience. We propose a Human-Centered Digital Ecosystem that places adequate staffing, circadian-aligned scheduling, protected recovery, and supportive organizational conditions before

Linking Ecosystem-Service Perceptions and Wool Valorisation in Alpine Sheep Farming Systems.

Wool is often regarded as a low-value by-product of Alpine sheep farming, despite its potential to convey the ecosystem services (ESs) generated by these systems. This study examines how awareness and perception of these services are associated with consumer attitudes towards locally produced wool in the Lanzo Valleys in Northwestern Italy. A convenience sample of 400 adults familiar with the study area completed an online questionnaire. Principal Component Analysis identified two orientations towards wool products-Sustainability Orientation and Product-Value Orientation-which together explain

Examining inequality in aquatic ecosystem services: Evidence from large-scale monitoring programs.

We hypothesize that aquatic ecosystem services are likely to be inequitably accessible and addressing this hypothesis requires systematic assessment at regional and national scales. We used existing data from large-scale aquatic monitoring programs (National Coastal Condition Assessment, National Lakes Assessment) to examine relationships between ecosystem condition, approximating a subset of cultural and provisioning services, and inequality (population below poverty level, minority population). We also assessed whether monitoring sites equitably represented the gradient of socioeconomic back

[Elucidation of Phenomena Involving Cyanobacteria in Freshwater Ecosystem by Chemically Ecological Approach].

Lakes Sagami and Tsukui are reservoirs constructed by connecting to the Sagami River. Because of eutrophication of the lakes, cyanobacteria have appeared every year. This review deals with phenomena related to occurrence of cyanobacteria that have been observed for 40 years since 1974 at the lakes. These 40 years of observations raised three interesting issues including the retention of cyanobacteria on their surfaces. These phenomena have been attributed to the usual factors, such as illuminance, nutrition and water temperature, but our research results suggested that they cannot be resolved

Surfactant pollution, an emerging threat to ecosystem: Approaches for effective bacterial degradation.

The use of surfactants in households and industries is inevitable and so is their discharge into the environment, especially into the water bodies as effluents. Being surface-active agents, their utilization is mostly seen in soaps, detergents, personal care products, emulsifiers, wetting agents, etc. Anionic surfactants are the most used class. These surfactants are responsible for the foam and froth in the water bodies and cause potential adverse effects to both biotic and abiotic components of the ecosystem. Surfactants are capable of penetrating the cell membrane and thus cause toxicity to

The immuneML ecosystem for machine learning analysis of adaptive immune receptor repertoires.

Adaptive immune receptor repertoires (AIRR) are key targets for biomedical research as they record past and ongoing adaptive immune responses. The capacity of machine learning (ML) to identify complex discriminative sequence patterns renders it an ideal approach for AIRR-based diagnostic and therapeutic discovery. To date, widespread adoption of AIRR ML has been inhibited by a lack of reproducibility, transparency, and interoperability. immuneML (immuneml.uio.no) addresses these concerns by implementing each step of the AIRR ML process in an extensible, open-source software ecosystem that is b

Desulfobacterales stimulates nitrate reduction in the mangrove ecosystem of a subtropical gulf.

The amount of nitrogen compounds discharged into the natural environment has increased drastically due to frequent human activities and led to worsening pollution. The mangrove ecosystem can remove nitrogen pollution, in this regard, few studies had focused on the relationship among nitrogen cycling genes, environmental factors, and taxonomic composition. In this study, shotgun metagenomic sequencing and quantitative polymerase chain reaction were used to understand the nitrogen cycle in the subtropical mangrove ecosystem in the Beibu Gulf of China. Eight nitrogen cycling pathways were annotat

Survey of Toxoplasma gondii Exposure in Muskrats in a Relatively Pristine Ecosystem.

Waterborne transmission of Toxoplasma gondii is assumed to be enhanced in areas with human-altered landscapes (e.g., urbanization, agriculture) and increased populations of non-native domestic and feral cats (Felis catus). However, little is known concerning T. gondii exposure risks in more natural watersheds (e.g., reduced human footprint, no domestic or feral cats) to establish a baseline for comparisons. In this study, muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus) were used as sentinels to assess baseline T. gondii exposure in a relatively pristine watershed in the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem, northern Min

Biofilm in Genital Ecosystem: A Potential Risk Factor for Chlamydia trachomatis Infection.

In healthy women, the cervicovaginal microbiota is mostly populated by Lactobacillus spp., the main host defense factor of the female genital tract. In addition to Lactobacilli, other microorganisms populate the cervicovaginal microbiota, like Candida spp. and Gardnerella vaginalis. The overgrowth of Candida spp. or G. vaginalis, known as biofilm-producing microorganisms in the genital ecosystem, may lead to microbial dysbiosis that increases the risk of acquiring sexually transmitted infections, like Chlamydia trachomatis. C. trachomatis, the leading cause of bacterial sexually transmitted di

Rodent species as possible reservoirs of Borrelia burgdorferi in a prairie ecosystem.

Lyme borreliosis is the most commonly reported vector-borne disease in the United States and Europe. It is caused by a group of spirochete bacteria belonging to the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex. These pathogens are transmitted among vertebrate reservoir hosts through the bite of hard-bodied ticks. While the enzootic cycle of Borrelia transmission is well understood in its primary reservoir, the white-footed mouse, Peromyscus leucopus, far less is known about other reservoir hosts, particularly in grassland ecosystems. This study assessed the prevalence of B. burgdorferi s. l. among

Avian Influenza Viruses in Wild Birds: Virus Evolution in a Multihost Ecosystem.

Wild ducks and gulls are the major reservoirs for avian influenza A viruses (AIVs). The mechanisms that drive AIV evolution are complex at sites where various duck and gull species from multiple flyways breed, winter, or stage. The Republic of Georgia is located at the intersection of three migratory flyways: the Central Asian flyway, the East Africa/West Asia flyway, and the Black Sea/Mediterranean flyway. For six complete study years (2010 to 2016), we collected AIV samples from various duck and gull species that breed, migrate, and overwinter in Georgia. We found a substantial subtype diver

Ecosystem effects and the management of petroleum-contaminated soils on subantarctic islands.

Human activity in the Polar Regions has resulted in petroleum contamination of soils. In this context, subantarctic islands are a unique management challenge for climatic, biological and logistical reasons. In this review we identify the main abiotic factors affecting petroleum-contaminated soils in the subantarctic environment, the primary effects of such contamination on biota, and lessons learned with regards to remediation techniques in this region. The sensitivity of biota to contamination depends on organism life stage, on soil properties, and on the degree of contaminant weathering. Ini

Tackling emerging fungal threats to animal health, food security and ecosystem resilience.

Emerging infections caused by fungi have become a widely recognized global phenomenon. Their notoriety stems from their causing plagues and famines, driving species extinctions, and the difficulty in treating human mycoses alongside the increase of their resistance to antifungal drugs. This special issue comprises a collection of articles resulting from a Royal Society discussion meeting examining why pathogenic fungi are causing more disease now than they did in the past, and how we can tackle this rapidly emerging threat to the health of plants and animals worldwide. This article is part of t

An open ecosystem engagement strategy through the lens of global food safety.

The Global Food Safety Partnership (GFSP) is a public/private partnership established through the World Bank to improve food safety systems through a globally coordinated and locally-driven approach. This concept paper aims to establish a framework to help GFSP fully leverage the potential of open models. In preparing this paper the authors spoke to many different GFSP stakeholders who asked questions about open models such as: what is it?what's in it for me?why use an open rather than a proprietary model?how will open models generate equivalent or greater sustainable revenue streams compared

Mercury biomagnification in the aquaculture pond ecosystem in the Pearl River Delta.

This is the first study to investigate the rate of mercury (Hg) biomagnification in the aquaculture pond ecosystem of the Pearl River Delta (PRD), China, by analyzing total mercury (THg) and methyl mercury (MeHg) concentrations in various species of fish at different trophic levels (TLs). Species representing a gradient of trophic positions in the aquaculture pond food chains were chosen for analyzing THg and MeHg concentrations. In this study, there were two kinds of the aquaculture pond food chains: (1) omnivorous (fish feeds, zooplankton, grass carp [Ctenopharyngodon idellus], and bighead c

Exploring reservoir dynamics: a case study of rabies in the Serengeti ecosystem.

Knowledge of infection reservoir dynamics is critical for effective disease control, but identifying reservoirs of multi-host pathogens is challenging. Here, we synthesize several lines of evidence to investigate rabies reservoirs in complex carnivore communities of the Serengeti ecological region in northwest Tanzania, where the disease has been confirmed in 12 carnivore species.Long-term monitoring data suggest that rabies persists in high-density domestic dog Canis familiaris populations (> 11 dogs km(-2)) and occurs less frequently in lower-density (< 5 dogs km(-2)) populations and only sp

Seabirds and native vegetation drive ecosystem processes that support atoll island resilience.

Ecosystem restoration is expected to enhance ecosystem resilience to climate change, but few empirical and mechanistic demonstrations of such assertions exist. Here, we explore this topic for tropical atoll systems, combining science on nutrient subsidies and geo-ecological functions through a unifying ecological energetics lens. We show that native forest cover and seabird nutrient inputs increase primary productivity and secondary metabolism on islands and adjacent coral reefs, scaling with key ecosystem processes. We then demonstrate that seabird and native forest restoration could contribu

Institutional readiness for payments for ecosystem services: Stakeholder perspectives from Sri Lanka.

Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) is gaining global traction as a market-based instrument for sustainable resource management, yet remains relatively novel in many developing countries. This study explores the perspectives of stakeholder groups, including buyers, sellers, and intermediaries, regarding PES in Sri Lanka, using a semi-structured questionnaire survey. Findings reveal varying levels of willingness to engage, with intermediaries showing more optimism, while buyers and sellers were more cautious and often skeptical about the feasibility. The study emphasizes the need for early kn
