The Impact of a Multi-Source "3 + 1" Feedback Model on Formative Assessment and Student Development in Higher Education: A Case Study in Undergraduate Biochemistry.

Formative assessment and feedback are widely acknowledged as crucial for effective learning, yet their systematic application in discipline-specific contexts remains insufficient. This study introduces a structured "3 + 1" feedback model-combining teacher, teaching assistant (TA), peer, and exemplar-based feedback-to address recurring challenges in undergraduate biochemistry group assignments, such as weak rigor, limited teamwork, and ineffective presentation skills. Implemented across three modules (preparation, revision, and reflection), the model aims to enhance disciplinary knowledge, scie

Leading large language models on a periodontology knowledge test.

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used in clinical and educational settings. However, there is a paucity of data on LLMs' performance in specialized dental domains. This study assessed the performance of four LLMs, including two general-purpose models, ChatGPT-4o and DeepSeek-R1, and two research-focused models, Consensus and Perplexity, using a validated set of 50 multiple-choice questions in periodontology. Each LLM completed five independent trials encompassing the full question set under both primed and non-primed conditions. A validated answer key served as the benchmark. Perf

Cognitive-level analysis of dentomaxillofacial radiology questions in the Turkish dentistry specialization examination: a Bloom's revised taxonomy analysis.

BACKGROUND: Bloom's revised taxonomy is widely used to evaluate the cognitive level of examination questions. With the growing use of large language models (LLMs), interest has increased in their potential to support cognitive classification. However, evidence comparing LLM-based classification with expert consensus in dental specialty examinations remains limited. This study aimed to analyze the cognitive levels of dentomaxillofacial radiology (DMFR) questions in the Turkish Dentistry Specialization Examination (DUS) and to evaluate the agreement between expert consensus and ChatGPT v5.2. A Reflective Approach to Enhancing Didactic Remediation.

Approaches to remediation have become increasingly important as the Academy responds to continued admissions pressures and progression monitoring by various accreditation bodies. Remediation is often driven by multifaceted issues, including enrollment numbers, academic preparedness, learner resiliency, efficacy of online delivery, graduation rates, and licensure examination success. Attitudes toward remediation may differ among faculty and students, and perspectives vary widely depending on the stakeholder group and across institutions. Each program has nuances and critical issues that make th

[Arrhythmias education-current considerations with a focus on ECG teaching].

In order to achieve favorable learning outcomes in medical students and residents, the development of educational interventions should be guided by specific principles. This article presents readers with a short summary of Kern's six-step approach to curriculum development before discussing results of medical education research with a focus on ECG teaching. A number of consecutive studies concluded that the choice of instructional format is less important for student learning outcome than examination consequences. Thus, if the final examination is summative (i.e., graded), students achieve hig

A method for assessing student ability to apply anatomical knowledge within a traditional anatomy laboratory examination.

Fidelity between teaching activities and assessment methods is an important goal of knowledge and performance evaluations in medical education. Ideally, assessment methods provide evidence of learning that reflects the types of knowledge described in the learning objectives of the course. The most reliable assessments involve the same or similar tasks as those used during the instructional components of the course. Our preclinical human anatomy course includes, in addition to traditional lecture and cadaver-based laboratory learning activities, a series of applied human anatomy learning activi

Assessing students with dyslexia and other reading difficulties through multiple diagnostic assessments.

This article aims to assist practitioners in understanding dyslexia and other reading difficulties and assessing students' learning needs. We describe the essential components of language and literacy, universal screening, diagnostic assessments, curriculum-based measurement and eligibility determination. We then introduce four diagnostic assessments as examples, including norm-referenced assessments (i.e. the Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing second edition and the Woodcock-Johnson IV Tests of Achievement) and criterion-referenced assessments (i.e. the Gallistel-Ellis Test of Codi

Teaching middle ear anatomy using a novel three-dimensional papercraft model.

BACKGROUND: The middle ear is a complex anatomical space which is difficult to interpret from two-dimensional imagery. Appropriate surgical knowledge of the area is required to operate, yet current anatomical teaching methods are costly and hard to access for the trainee. METHODS: A papercraft 3D design involving anatomical elements added separately to a model was designed, and then peer-validated by medical students and junior doctors. Preliminary quantitative assessment was performed using an anatomical labelling questionnaire, with six students given a lecture to act as a control. Qualitat

Characteristics of maltreatment experience and academic functioning among maltreated children.

This article examined the impact of maltreatment characteristics on academic functioning in a sample of school-age maltreated children. Results revealed several differences among three types of maltreatment subgroups (physical abuse, neglect, and sexual abuse) on characteristics of maltreatment experience. Few maltreatment characteristics were significantly related to measures of academic functioning, but the findings suggest that the effects of maltreatment characteristics should be examined separately for different types of maltreatment.

Increasing awareness for higher quality care. Measuring knowledge of sickle cell disease in adult patients.

1. Research suggests there is some confusion about the significance of sickle cell trait among patients, healthcare professionals and the general population. 2. Educational programmes should be available to patients who need or want to know about sickle cell disease. 3. More sickle cell centres are needed, especially in areas where there is a high incidence of sickle cell disease. 4. Lack of awareness and knowledge of sickle cell disease, especially among GPs, limits the provision of a good quality service.
