Entertainment-education to reduce internalized stigma, increase intimate partner status disclosure intentions, and increase antiretroviral medical adherence intentions: A randomized controlled trial targeting black women living with HIV in the Southern U.S.

BACKGROUND: Black women in the Southern U.S. account for 67% of all new HIV diagnoses across women of all races and ethnicities. In comparison to women of other racial and ethnic identities, Black women disproportionately experience internalized stigma, lower levels of disclosure self-efficacy, and lower rates of medical adherence. The disclosure processes model hypothesizes that persons living with HIV can be disclosure avoidance oriented or disclosure approach oriented. Disclosure avoidance is facilitated by various forms of stigma and negative outcome expectations. While disclosure approach

Available instruments for assessment include questionnaires developed for generic illness-related disabilities and ALS-specific questionnaires that focus on function. METHODS: Comparisons were made between two ALS-specific questionnaires (ALS Functional Rating Scale and SIP/ALS-19) and a generic instrument (Short Form-12) given to 1,513 patients from the (North American) ALS Patient Care Database. RESULTS: The SIP/ALS-19 correlates well with the ALS F

Health literacy: an important issue for communicating health information to patients.

"Health literacy" refers to an individual's ability to read, understand, and use the information necessary to obtain adequate health care. Because so much health-related information is provided to patients in written form, some degree of health literacy is essential. A review of the international medical and education literature was conducted to identify research on health literacy. Limited health literacy is a widespread problem in both non-industrialized and industrialized nations, and it is mostly related to deficient reading skills. Deficient reading skills are most prevalent among those w

Educational constraints on marital sorting and income mobility.

This paper examines the effect of educational assortative mating on overall income mobility in terms of both inter- and intragenerational mobility. In recent years, educational assortative mating has become a trend in China, and this marital sorting pattern not only contributes to marriage stability but is also related to increased income mobility. Educational assortative mating affects the distribution of educational resources among families with diffferent educational qualifications. Families with higher educational qualifications have more educational resources, thus obtaining a more solid

Determinants of mammography screening participation-a cross-sectional analysis of the German population-based Gutenberg Health Study (GHS).

PURPOSE: We investigated the association between social inequality and participation in a mammography screening program (MSP). Since the German government offers mammography screening free of charge, any effect of social inequality on participation should be due to educational status and not due to the financial burden. METHODS: The 'Gutenberg Health Study' is a cohort study in the Rhine-Main-region, Germany. A health check-up was performed, and questions about medical history, health behavior, including secondary prevention such as use of mammography, and social status are included. Two indi

Determination of passing scores on certification examinations: an unresolved issue.

In the field of clinical laboratory science, certification may be obtained by passing the National Certification Agency for Medical Laboratory Personnel (NCA) examination. This multiple-choice test is competence-based and criterion-referenced, and uses a modified Angoff procedure to establish the passing score. For this study, the NCA examination scores of 1,868 certification applicants (mostly new graduates) and 111 selected laboratory practitioners were compared. Although the NCA examination is designed to define the level of minimum competence, the failure rate of practitioners identified b

Nutritional Education and the State of Oral Health in Adolescents.

Background. Health promotion of adolescents is a high priority in Poland. Epidemiological data still indicates the low effectiveness of the health care system in this area. The relationship between the state of oral health and the vocational education of adolescents seems to be justified. The objective is to evaluate changes in the oral health status, eating habits, and the relationship between oral health and lifestyle related to vocational education among students from a secondary technical school of gastronomy and electro-engineering and information technology. An observation study of mathematics instruction for students with IDD in grades K-2.

This observation study documents the amount and quality of mathematics instruction provided to students with intellectual and developmental disabilities in kindergarten through second grade in self-contained special education settings. We observed six special education teachers and their students (N = 12) during a total of 967 min allotted to early numeracy and mathematics instruction. Mathematics and early numeracy instruction comprised 61.2% of all observed time allotted for mathematics, followed by non-instruction (32.7%), mathematics assessment (5.7%), and instruction in other areas (0.3%)

Indicators of potential success among radiography students.

As the demand for qualified radiographers grows and the number of applicants to schools far exceeds the available capacity, program directors across the country face increasing difficulty in screening candidates for admission. This study sought to determine if there was a significant correlation between high school class rank, Scholastic Aptitude Test scores and the successful completion of a radiography curriculum as measured by a passing score on the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists examination.
