Galectins in the abdominal cavity of the conger eel Conger myriaster participate in the cellular encapsulation of parasitic nematodes by host cells.

Congerin is a proto-type galectin distributed on the skin and mucosal epithelia of the upper digestive tract of the Japanese conger eel Conger myriaster. It has at least 2 isotypes, namely, congerin I and II, and plays a role in bio-defense at the body surface. In the current study, we identified both isotypes in the peritoneal fluid and peritoneal cells of C. myriaster by western blot and mass spectrometry (MS)/MS analysis. Cucullanus nematodes parasitize the abdominal cavity of C. myriaster, and immunohistochemical analyses demonstrated that congerins can bind to both the body surface of the

Influence of temperature regime on endocrine parameters and vitellogenesis during experimental maturation of European eel (Anguilla anguilla) females.

We examined the effect of temperature in European silver eels during their maturation induced by injections of carp pituitary extract on endocrine parameters: pituitary fshβ and lhβ expression, plasma 17β-estradiol (E2) and vitellogenin, estrogen receptor 1 (esr1), and vitellogenin 2 (vtg2) expression in liver. A variable thermal regime (T10) that increased from 10° to 14° and 17°C was compared with a constant 20°C regime (T20) during 12 weeks. T10 caused a faster development until week 8, higher fshβ, lhβ, esr1 expression, and higher E2 levels. The results strongly suggest that T10 is inducin

Heavy metals and organochlorinated compounds in the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) from the Adour estuary and associated wetlands (France).

Heavy metals and organic pollutants were investigated in the Adour estuary (South West France) and associated wetlands using the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) as a bioindicator. Heavy metals (Cu, Cd, Zn, Pb, and Ag) were measured in soft tissue of yellow eels. Mercury (total Hg and MeHg) and organochlorinated compounds (7 PCBs, 11 OCPs) were analysed in muscle. Concentrations in muscle were in agreement with moderately contaminated environments in Europe and were below the norms fixed for eel consumption for heavy metals and OCPs. Analyses of liver showed a higher pressure of Ag and Zn in t

Cortisol mobilizes mineral stores from vertebral skeleton in the European eel: an ancestral origin for glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis?

Endogenous excess cortisol and glucocorticoid (GC) therapy are a major cause of secondary osteoporosis in humans. Intense bone resorption can also be observed in other vertebrates such as migratory teleost fish at the time of reproductive migration and during fasting when large amounts of calcium and phosphate are required. Using a primitive teleost, the European eel, as a model, we investigated whether cortisol could play an ancestral role in the induction of vertebral skeleton demineralization. Different histological and histomorphometric methods were performed on vertebral samples of contro

Double-balloon endoscopy for treatment of long-term abdominal discomfort due to small bowel penetration by an eel bone.

BACKGROUND: Penetration of the GI tract by a fish bone was treated by laparotomy. DBE is a useful procedure for removal of a foreign body from the small bowel. CASE REPORT: A 33-year-old male presented with bothersome postprandial fullness. He was diagnosed previously with functional dyspepsia, and had been treated with medication for 8 months with no success. During antegrade DBE, which was performed to rule out of small intestinal abnormalities, an eel bone found stuck in the jejunum was grasped with forceps and pulled out. Following removal of the bone, the patient's postprandial fullness

Nitric oxide donors can enhance the intestinal transport and absorption of insulin and [Asu(1,7)]-eel calcitonin in rats.

The characteristics of three NO donors, 3-(2-hydroxy-1-(1-methylethyl)-2-nitrosohydrazino)-1-propanamine (NOC5), N-ethyl-2-(1-ethyl-2-hydroxy-2-nitrosohydrazino)-ethanamine (NOC12) and S-nitroso-N-acetyl-DL-penicillamine (SNAP) as absorption enhancers for peptide drugs were examined in rats using a modified Ussing chamber method and an in situ closed loop method. Insulin and [Asu(1,7)]-eel calcitonin (ECT) were used as a model drug to investigate the effectiveness of the tested enhancers. The NO donors significantly increased the in vitro permeability of insulin across all intestinal membranes

[Prevention of post-ovariectomy osteoporosis in the rat. Comparative study of synthetic salmon calcitonin and eel calcitonin aminosuberic analogue].

The authors evaluate the efficacy of salmon calcitonin and aminosuberic analogue of eel calcitonin in the prevention of post-oophorectomy osteoporosis in rats. Both drugs, administered at the same dosage, are equally effective in preventing oophorectomy bone loss in rats. Besides, plasma biochemical evaluations demonstrate that calcitonins reduce bone turnover in treated rats, compared with control oophorectomized ones.

A study of barosensitivity in the European eel (Anguilla anguilla, L.): effects of arterial pressure changes on heart rate and ventilation.

A study of the effects of arterial pressure changes on heart rate and ventilation was carried out on the eel (Anguilla anguilla L.). The anatomical characteristics of this fish enabled extracorporeal circulation in both the ventral and dorsal aorta to be set up. The pressure was changed mechanically, either by clamping external circulations or, in some cases, by modifying the frequency of a pulsatory pump placed in series with the heart, thus ensuring constant blood flows in the ventral aorta. The maximal pressure decreases obtained by clamping the external ventral aorta circulation (70%-80%)

Behaviour of European eel Anguilla anguilla transitioning from the yellow resident to the silver migratory stage in marine waters.

Current knowledge on the continental shelf and transatlantic spawning migration of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) is based on silver eels outmigrating from fresh water. However, an unknown proportion of eels grow in marine coastal waters during the continental part of their lifecycle and therefore start their spawning migration while they are already in marine waters. To study the onset of the European eel's spawning migration in marine waters, we tagged yellow eels in Sandnesfjord, Norway. One hundred yellow and pre-migratory eels (stage FII or FIII) were tagged with acoustic transmitte

Identification and functional characterization of type II interferon receptors (CRFB6, CRFB13 and CRFB17) in Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica).

In mammals, IFN-γ acts as a critical cytokine that triggers intracellular signaling by binding to specific IFNGR1 and IFNGR2 receptors. Unlike mammals, teleosts possess two members of type II IFN genes (IFN-γ and IFN-γrel), two IFNGR1 paralogs (CRFB13 and CRFB17) and a single IFNGR2 homolog (CRFB6). Despite the identification of type II IFN receptors in multiple fish species, the molecular features, expression profiles and signaling-associated function remain limited. In this study, three type II interferon receptor genes, AjCRFB6, AjCRFB13 and AjCRFB17 were identified in Japanese eel, Anguill

Continuous cell lines from kidney and spleen of Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica, with capacity for antiviral immune response.

In this study, two stable cell lines were established from the kidney (AJK) and spleen (AJSP) tissues of Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica) using the tissue explant method, with the aim of supporting immunological research in this species. Following isolation, AJK and AJSP cells were cultured in DMEM/F-12 medium supplemented with 20 % fetal bovine serum (FBS) at 28 °C, with passaging every 3-4 days. After the fifth passage, the cells were maintained in DMEM/F-12 containing 15 % FBS for passage culture. Ribosomal RNA gene sequencing confirmed the origin of both cell lines as A. japonica. Transcriptomic dynamics and immune-associated SNP discovery in Monopterus albus infected with Chinese rice-field eel rhabdovirus.

Viral infections represent a significant challenge to the health and productivity of Chinese rice-field eel (Monopterus albus) aquaculture. In this study, a 108-h preliminary experiment identified the critical immune response window between 24 and 48 h post-infection (hpi) with Chinese rice-field eel rhabdovirus (CrERV). Based on this, kidney and spleen tissues were sampled at 24 and 48 hpi for histopathological analysis using hematoxylin and eosin staining. Marked hemorrhage and tissue destruction were observed in the kidneys at 48 hpi, indicating progressive pathological damage during later

In vitro and in silico insights on the regulation by gonadal hormones of pituitary GnRH receptor expression in a basal teleost, the European eel.

Eel species are basal teleosts with a unique life cycle including an arrest of sexual maturation before the reproductive oceanic migration. Our early studies showed that this blockade results from a deficient production of pituitary gonadotropins, due in part to a low responsiveness to gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). Three GnRH receptors have been identified in the eel, among them gnrhr2 is the main pituitary receptor whose expression increases during the sexual maturation induced by gonadotropic treatments. We investigated the role of gonadal hormones in the feedback regulation of gnrh

Differential distribution and potential regulatory roles of estrogen receptor 2a and 2b in the pituitary of ricefield eel Monopterus albus.

Estrogens play important regulatory roles in the pituitary of vertebrates. Two forms of estrogen receptor 2 (Esr2), namely Esr2a and Esr2b, are identified in teleosts, but their differential roles remain to be fully elucidated. In the present study, expression and potential functional roles of Esr2a and Esr2b were characterized in ricefield eels. esr2a and esr2b mRNA were broadly distributed in tissues, with high levels observed in the brain, pituitary, and gonads. In order to examine the cellular localization of Esr2a and Esr2b in the pituitary, specific antisera against ricefield eel Esr2a a

Molecular characterization, expression patterns, and functional analysis of toll-interacting protein (Tollip) in Japanese eel Anguilla japonica.

Toll-interacting protein (Tollip) is a key negative regulator of TLR-mediated innate immune responses. The structure and function of Tollip have been well identified in mammals, but the information about Tollip is still limited in teleost fishes. In the present study, the homologue of Tollip was cloned from Japanese eel. It contained an open reading frame encoding a polypeptide of 276 amino acids which shared high identities with other homologues from different species. Multiple alignment of the amino acid sequence showed that the AjTollip protein has the typical conserved domains including an

Does silvering or 11-ketotestosterone affect osmoregulatory ability in the New Zealand short-finned eel (Anguilla australis)?

Silvering has been associated with advancing osmoregulatory ability. Given the demonstrated role of 11-ketotestosterone (11KT) in mediating many of the silvering-related changes, we investigated the role of 11KT in driving this advanced osmoregulatory ability in the New Zealand short-finned eel (Anguilla australis). Yellow (non-migratory) eels with or without 11KT implants and blank-implanted silver (migratory) eels, either held in freshwater or subjected to seawater challenge, were sampled to determine serum [Na+] and [Cl-], pituitary prolactin mRNA levels, gill Na+/K+-ATPase activity and gil

Post- and pre-synaptic action of isotocin in the upper esophageal sphincter muscle of the eel: its role in water drinking.

Isotocin is a fish analogue of the mammalian hormone oxytocin. To elucidate sites of action of isotocin (IT) in the upper esophageal sphincter (UES) muscle, a key muscle in swallowing, IT was applied after treatment with tetrodotoxin (TTX). Even after blocking nerve activity with TTX, IT relaxes the UES muscle in a concentration-dependent manner, suggesting that IT receptor(s) is present on the muscle cells. Similar relaxation was also obtained by application of 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX), forskolin (FSK) and 8-bromo-adenosine, 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (8BrcAMP) after pretreatment wi
