Obsessive Compulsive Disorder as a functional interhemispheric imbalance at the thalamic level.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) involves failures in two main inhibitory processes, namely cognitive (obsessions) and behavioral (compulsions). Recent research has supported two cortical-subcortical pathways on OCD pathogenesis: (a) the frontostriatal loop (dorsolateral-caudate-striatum-thalamus) responsible for impairments of behavioral inhibition; (b) the orbitofrontal loop (orbitofrontal, medial prefrontal and cingulate) responsible for impairments with cognitive inhibitory processes. These failures in both cognitive and motor inhibitory systems may mediate several neuropsychological de

Spatial symmetries in vestibular projections to the uvula-nodulus.

The discharge of secondary vestibular neurons relays the activity of the vestibular endorgans, occasioned by movements in three-dimensional physical space. At a slightly higher level of analysis, the discharge of each secondary vestibular neuron participates in a multifiber projection or pathway from primary afferents via the secondary neurons to another neuronal population. The logical organization of this projection determines whether characteristics of physical space are retained or lost. The logical structure of physical space is standardly expressed in terms of the mathematics of group th

Further observations on the olivocerebellar projection in the monkey.

The distribution of retrogradely labeled cells in the inferior olive was studied following cerebellar injections of horseradish peroxidase in four experiments in macaque monkeys. The flocculus was found to receive its main projection from the dorsal cap and a minor projection from the medial accessory olive. The uvula receives fibers from the nucleus beta, the dorsomedial cell column and from an area of the medial accessory olive. The paramedian lobule is supplied from the dorsal and ventral lamella of the principal olive and from an area in each of the accessory olives. The findings are consi

Localization of efferent neurons innervating the pharyngeal constrictor muscles and the cervical esophagus muscle in the cat by means of the horseradish peroxidase method.

Following horseradish peroxidase (HRP) injection into the cephalopharyngeal muscle (CeP), the hyopharyngeal muscle (HP), the thyropharyngeal muscle (TP), the cricopharyngeal muscle (CP) and the cervical esophagus muscle (CE) of the cat, labeled neurons were identified in the nucleus retrofacialis and the rostral part of the nucleus ambiguus ipsilaterally. The rostral end of the labeled cell column was located more rostrally for CeP and HP than for TP, CP and CE. No difference was noted within the former two or within the latter three. The level of the caudal end of the labeled cell column beca

The efferent connections of the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus of the rat.

The efferent connections of the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMH) of the rat have been examined using the autoradiographic method. Following injections of small amounts (0.4-2.0 muCi) of tritium labeled amino acids, fibers from the VMH can be traced forward through the periventricular region, the medial hypothalamus and the medial forebrain bundle to the preoptic and thalamic periventricular nuclei, to the medial and lateral preoptic areas, to the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis and to the ventral part of the lateral septum. Some labeled axons continue through the bed nucleus

[Functional anatomy of the glossopharyngeal, vagus, accessory and hypoglossal cranial nerves].

The glossopharyngeal nerve and the vagus nerve are mixed nerves containing sensory, gustatory, motor and autonomous fibers (parasympathetic). The glossopharyngeal nerve has mainly visceral afferent fibers from the tongue and pharynx, gustatory fibers from the posterior third of the tongue, parasympathetic afferent fibers from carotid sinus and carotid glomus, parasympathetic efferent fibers for the parotid gland and motor fibers for the muscles of the pharynx. The vagus nerve contains mostly visceral afferent fibers from laryngeal, intrathoracic and abdominal organs, parasympathetic efferent f

Fiber connections of the central nucleus of semicircular torus in cyprinids.

Fiber connections of the presumed auditory portion of the semicircular torus or the central nucleus (TSc) as well as other central and peripheral auditory structures were studied by tract-tracing methods in carp and goldfish. Major ascending projections to the TSc originated from the descending octaval nucleus (DO) and medullary secondary octaval population (SO). Toropetal neurons of the DO were within the saccular terminal zone. A small number of toropetal DO neurons might receive inputs from other inner ear and lateral line endorgans as well. Fibers from the DO terminated in a deep zone of t

Non-invasive evaluation of input-output characteristics of sensorimotor cerebral areas in healthy humans.

The topography of scalp SEPs to mixed and sensory median nerve (MN) and to musculocutaneous nerve stimulation was examined in 20 healthy subjects through multichannel (12-36) recording in a 50 msec post-stimulus epoch. MN-SEPs in both frontal leads were characterized by an N18, P20, N24, P28 complex showing maximal amplitude at contralateral parasagittal sites. This was sometimes partly obscured by a wide wave N30 having a fixed latency, but a steep amplitude gradient moving toward the scalp vertex. A P40 component followed, having longer peak latencies, moving the recording sites from contral

Tests of the regenerative capacity of tectal efferent axons in the frog, Rana pipiens.

Experiments were designed to determine if neurons of the ranid optic tectum, a major target of the optic nerve, possess the same regenerative potential as optic axons. Normal tectal efferent (TE) projections were reexamined by using the anterograde transport of 3H-proline and autoradiography (n = 18), bulk-filling damaged TE axons with horseradish peroxidase (HRP; n = 18) and anterogradely transporting wheat germ agglutinin-HRP (n = 8) to label TE axons. Results were similar to reports that used degeneration methods (Rubinson: Brain Behav. Evol. 1:529-561, '68; Lazar: Acta. Biol. Hung. 20:171-

Efferent actions in the chinchilla vestibular labyrinth.

Efferent fibers were electrically stimulated in the brain stem, while afferent activity was recorded from the superior vestibular nerve in barbiturate-anesthetized chinchillas. We concentrated on canal afferents, but otolith afferents were also studied. Among canal fibers, calyx afferents were recognized by their irregular discharge and low rotational gains. In separate experiments, stimulating electrodes were placed in the efferent cell groups ipsilateral or contralateral to the recording electrode or in the midline. While single shocks were ineffective, repetitive shock trains invariably led

Dendritic arbors and central projections of physiologically characterized auditory fibers from the saccule of the toadfish, Opsanus tau.

Neurobiotin was injected iontophoretically into saccular afferents of toadfish (Opsanus tau) after intracellular recording to examine dendritic arbors and central projections with respect to the physiological and directional response properties of the cells. Dendritic arbors of 36 afferents were examined in detail. Maximum diameter of the arbor and the number of terminal points were positively correlated with each other, but neither was predictive of spontaneous activity or sensitivity. Best azimuths were centered around 30 degrees -40 degrees, which corresponds to the angle of the saccule wit

[The morphological characteristics of the parasympathetic innervation of the pyloric sphincter in the cat].

The method of axonal transport of horse-radish peroxidase was used to detect the localization of neurons in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve sending the axons to the pyloric sphincter. The investigation was carried out in cats. Under study were also morphological features of the nodular ganglion responsible for afferent innervation of the sphincter. The maximum amount of the corresponding cells are found in the dorsomedial part of the dorsal motor nucleus in the area from +1.0 to +2.0 mm (with respect to obex). The afferent neurons to which information comes from interoceptors of th

Connections and oculomotor projections of the superior vestibular nucleus and cell group 'y'.

Attempts were made to determine brainstem and cerebellar afferent and efferent projections of the superior vestibular nucleus (SVN) and cell group 'y' ('y') in the cat using axoplasmic tracers. Injections of HRP, WGA-HRP and [3H]amino acids were made into SVN and 'y' using two different infratentorial stereotaxic approaches. Controls were provided by unilateral HRP injections involving the oculomotor nuclear complex (OMC), the interstitial nucleus of Cajal (INC) and the deep cerebellar nuclei (DCN). Large injections of SVN almost invariably involved 'y' and dorsal parts of the lateral vestibul

Strengthening of the Efferent Olivocochlear System Leads to Synaptic Dysfunction and Tonotopy Disruption of a Central Auditory Nucleus.

The auditory system in many mammals is immature at birth but precisely organized in adults. Spontaneous activity in the inner ear plays a critical role in guiding this maturation process. This is shaped by an efferent pathway that descends from the brainstem and makes transient direct synaptic contacts with inner hair cells. In this work, we used an α9 cholinergic nicotinic receptor knock-in mouse model (of either sex) with enhanced medial efferent activity (Chrna9L9'T, L9'T) to further understand the role of the olivocochlear system in the correct establishment of auditory circuits. In vivo AAV9-Myo7a gene rescue restores hearing and cholinergic efferent innervation in inner hair cells.

In the mammalian cochlea, sensory hair cells are crucial for the transduction of acoustic stimuli into electrical signals, which are then relayed to the central auditory pathway via spiral ganglion neuron (SGN) afferent dendrites. The SGN output is directly modulated by inhibitory cholinergic axodendritic synapses from the efferent fibers originating in the superior olivary complex. When the adult cochlea is subjected to noxious stimuli or aging, the efferent system undergoes major rewiring, such that it reestablishes direct axosomatic contacts with the inner hair cells (IHCs), which occur onl

Neuroanatomy and Imaging Assessment in Traumatic Brain Injury.

Concussion is a common injury in childhood with an estimated 1.4 million children sustaining concussions annually in the United States. While many concussions occur in the sports and recreation setting, it is important to recognize that non-sports and recreation activities are also common causes of concussion in childhood. Since neurologic projections associated with the afferent and efferent visual system are widely distributed throughout the brain and thought to comprise over 50% of brain function, it is not surprising that the diffuse sear injury associated with concussion often produces vi

Reduced auditory efferent activity in childhood selective mutism.

BACKGROUND: Selective mutism is a psychiatric disorder of childhood characterized by consistent inability to speak in specific situations despite the ability to speak normally in others. The objective of this study was to test whether reduced auditory efferent activity, which may have direct bearings on speaking behavior, is compromised in selectively mute children. METHODS: Participants were 16 children with selective mutism and 16 normally developing control children matched for age and gender. All children were tested for pure-tone audiometry, speech reception thresholds, speech discrimina

Neuro-ophthalmic deficits after head trauma.

Head trauma can injure the afferent and/or efferent visual systems, resulting in neuro-ophthalmic deficits. When assessing afferent pathway injuries, a stepwise approach to evaluating visual acuity, pupils, color perception, and visual fields is critical. Traumatic optic neuropathy is of especial importance and its management must be tailored on a case-by-case basis. Efferent pathway injuries should be assessed with attention to abnormalities of ocular alignment and motility, which may occur as isolated deficits or as part of a recognizable syndrome. Concussion or diffuse axonal injuries may a

Efferent inhibition strength is a physiological correlate of hyperacusis in children with autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability that is poorly understood. ASD can influence communication, social interaction, and behavior. Children with ASD often have sensory hypersensitivities, including auditory hypersensitivity (hyperacusis). In adults with hyperacusis who are otherwise neurotypical, the medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent reflex is stronger than usual. In children with ASD, the MOC reflex has been measured, but without also assessing hyperacusis. We assessed the MOC reflex in children with ASD by measuring the strength of MOC-induced inhibition of transien
