Preparation and Stability Study of an Injectable Hydrogel for Artificial Intraocular Lenses.

Currently available intraocular lenses (IOLs) on the market often differ significantly in elastic modulus compared to the natural human lens, which impairs their ability to respond effectively to the tension of the ciliary muscles for focal adjustment after implantation. In this study, we synthesized a polyacrylamide-sodium acrylate hydrogel (PAH) through the cross-linking polymerization of acrylamide and sodium acrylate. This hydrogel possesses excellent biocompatibility and exhibits several favorable properties. Notably, the hydrogel demonstrates high transparency (94%) and a refractive inde

Alpha-plutonium's polycrystalline elastic moduli over its full temperature range.

alpha-plutonium's volume-corrected polycrystal elastic moduli were measured between 18 K and the upper limit of its occurrence, near 400 K. The two independent moduli for a polycrystal-bulk and shear-behave smoothly, indicating no phase transition. Both moduli show the same 50% increase on cooling, an order of magnitude larger than in other metals. The Debye temperature obtained from low-temperature elastic moduli, 207 K, significantly exceeds most previous estimates. The Gruneisen parameter gamma=5.3, obtained from the temperature dependence of the bulk modulus, is intermediate among previous

Width Dependent Elastic Properties of Graphene Nanoribbons.

The mechanical response of graphene nanoribbons under uniaxial tension, as well as its dependence on the nanoribbon width, is presented by means of numerical simulations. Both armchair and zigzag edged graphene nanoribbons are considered. We discuss results obtained through two different theoretical approaches, viz. density functional methods and molecular dynamics atomistic simulations using empirical force fields especially designed to describe interactions within graphene sheets. Apart from the stress-strain curves, we calculate several elastic parameters, such as the Young's modulus, the t

Relationship Between the Changes of Tendon Elastic Moduli With Ultrasound Shear Wave Elastography and Mechanical Compression Test.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the consistency of the changes in the elastic modulus measured with ultrasound shear wave elastography (SWE) with changes measured through mechanical testing using tendons that were artificially altered by chemical modifications. METHODS: Thirty-six canine flexor digitorum profundus tendons were used for this experiment. To mimic tendon mechanical property changes induced by tendinopathy conditions, tendons were treated with collagenase to soften the tissue by collagen digestion or with 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide hydro

[New Diagnostic Imaging Technique - Shear Wave Elastography].

Shear wave elastography (SWE) is a new non-invasive diagnostic imaging technique, that maps the elastic properties of tissues. Nowadays this modality develops increasingly in medicine across its disciplines and opens a new era of high-quality ultrasound examination because it increases the specificity and thus improves diagnostic assurance. This method is similar to manual palpation, shows elastic properties of biological tissues and provides a kind of reconstruction of the internal structure of soft tissues based on measurement of the response of tissue compression. Various biological tissues

Experimental Evidence for the Pore Size Dependence of Elastic Properties in a Liquid Adsorbate Confined to Nanopores.

The elasticity of adsorbates is relevant for many applications of porous materials. Theoretical studies predict a pronounced increase of elastic moduli for adsorbates under nanoconfinement, but an experimental confirmation is still missing. Here we present an ultrasonic study on the longitudinal modulus βAr,ads of liquid argon in porous glass samples with different pore radii between 1.8 and 12.8 nm. The analysis of the measured moduli of empty, β0, and filled samples, β, reveals that the modulus of the adsorbate, βAr,ads, increases linearly with the inverse pore radius, 1/rP, as predicted by

Material properties of arachnoid trabeculae in situ using inverse finite element analysis.

The pia-arachnoid complex (PAC), composed of pia mater, arachnoid mater, and arachnoid trabeculae, plays a critical role in transmitting mechanical forces between the brain and skull during head trauma. Despite its importance, the material properties of the PAC microstructure are unknown, limiting the accurate representation of the brain-skull interface in simulations of traumatic brain injuries. To address this unmet need, this study combined in situ, pressure-controlled subarachnoid inflation with optical coherence tomography imaging and inverse finite element (FE) analysis to calculate the

Mechanical and Electrical Properties of Red Blood Cells Under Oxidative Stress Using Optical Tweezers.

Red blood cells (RBCs) rely on their mechanical and electrostatic properties to maintain microvascular circulation and oxygen delivery. Oxidative stress, a hallmark of many diseases, disrupts these properties by damaging membrane lipids and cytoskeletal proteins. In this study, RBCs from healthy donors were incubated with three oxidative agents, i.e., phenylhydrazine (PHZ), tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BHP), and diamide, to investigate how oxidative stress affects the combination of single-cell mechanical, morphological, biochemical, and electrical properties under different oxidizing condition

Quantitative diagnosis of early acute compartment syndrome using two-dimensional shear wave elastography in a rabbit model.

PURPOSE: This study explored the association of the elasticity modulus and shear wave velocity (SWV) of the tibialis anterior muscle, as measured by two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE), with the intracompartmental pressure (ICP) determined using the Whitesides method in a New Zealand rabbit model of acute compartment syndrome (ACS). Additionally, it evaluated the viability of 2D-SWE as a noninvasive, quantitative tool for the early detection of ACS. METHODS: An ACS model was established through direct external compression by applying pressure bandaging to the lower legs of 15 New

The Effect of Substrate Stiffness on Cardiomyocyte Action Potentials.

The stiffness of myocardial tissue changes significantly at birth and during neonatal development, concurrent with significant changes in contractile and electrical maturation of cardiomyocytes. Previous studies by our group have shown that cardiomyocytes generate maximum contractile force when cultured on a substrate with a stiffness approximating native cardiac tissue. However, effects of substrate stiffness on the electrophysiology and ion currents in cardiomyocytes have not been fully characterized. In this study, neonatal rat ventricular myocytes were cultured on the surface of flat polya

High-Resolution Shear Wave Imaging of the Human Cornea Using a Dual-Element Transducer.

Estimating the corneal elasticity can provide valuable information for corneal pathologies and treatments. Ophthalmologic pathologies will invariably cause changes to the elasticity of the cornea. For example, keratoconus and the phototoxic effects of ultraviolet radiation usually increase the corneal elasticity. This makes a quantitative estimation of the elasticity of the human cornea important for ophthalmic diagnoses. The present study investigated the use of a proposed high-resolution shear wave imaging (HR-SWI) method based on a dual-element transducer (comprising an 8-MHz element for pu

Enhanced Toughening of the Lamellar Structure in a Black Coral by Interlocking Spines.

The black corals possess a branched, tree-like skeleton that is composed of chitin fibrils embedded within a protein matrix. This skeleton exhibits growth rings interlocked by spines. The lamellae are tightly wrapped around the spines, creating a structure akin to an onion. The indentation hardness and Young's modulus of the spines are comparable to those of the chitin rings. The compressive stress and the fracture toughness are increased by approximately 14.6% and 32.2% at higher loading rate in the dry state, but remain comparable at different loading rates in the wet state. The lamellar int

Superstretchable, yet stiff, fatigue-resistant ligament-like elastomers.

Ligaments are flexible and stiff tissues around joints to support body movements, showing superior toughness and fatigue-resistance. Such a combination of mechanical properties is rarely seen in synthetic elastomers because stretchability, stiffness, toughness, and fatigue resistance are seemingly incompatible in materials design. Here we resolve this long-standing mismatch through a hierarchical crosslinking design. The obtained elastomer can endure 30,000% stretch and exhibit a Young's modulus of 18 MPa and toughness of 228 MJ m-3, outperforming all the reported synthetic elastomers. Further

Porous morphology and graded materials endow hedgehog spines with impact resistance and structural stability.

Hedgehog spines with evolved unique structures are studied on account of their remarkable mechanical efficiency. However, because of limitations of existing knowledge, it remains unclear how spines work as a material with a balance of stiffness and toughness. By combining qualitative three-dimensional (3D) structural characterization, material composition analysis, biomechanical analysis, and parametric simulations, the relationship between microstructural characteristic and multifunctional features of hedgehog spines is revealed here. The result shows that the fibers transform from the outer

Effective length correction factor of disc-buckle type scaffolding by considering joint bending stiffness and geometrical size.

Based on the theory of sway frame column, the equation of the effective length factor was derived in this paper. Combined with the characteristics of semi-rigid joints, the linear stiffness correction factor of horizontal bar was introduced, and the equation of effective length correction factor was obtained. By using MATLAB programming method, the three-dimensional relationship between the effective length correction factor and the influencing factors was obtained, and the entire process of the stability bearing capacity of the disc-buckle type high support system was described in detail, whi
