PURPOSE: To evaluate the functional and cosmetic effects of elbow supracondylar fractures (SCF) in children with residual rotational deformity.
METHODS: Retrospective review cohort of patients with evidence of malrotation after treatment for SCF. An analysis of the postoperative X-ray of 305 consecutive SCF type 3 treated surgically during five years identified 46 elbows with rotational deformity that fulfilled the selection criteria and were recalled for review; only 27 patients agreed to participate. Patients were evaluated clinically and radiographically. Clinically, the elbow and shoulder

AIMS: This study aimed to answer the following questions: do 3D-printed models lead to a more accurate recognition of the pattern of complex fractures of the elbow?; do 3D-printed models lead to a more reliable recognition of the pattern of these injuries?; and do junior surgeons benefit more from 3D-printed models than senior surgeons?
METHODS: A total of 15 orthopaedic trauma surgeons (seven juniors, eight seniors) evaluated 20 complex elbow fractures for their overall pattern (i.e. varus posterior medial rotational injury, terrible triad injury, radial head fracture with posterolateral dis

This study was conducted to explore epidemiologic features of traumatic elbow dislocation with associated fractures in pediatric population following appropriate treatment options.Incidence of elbow dislocation with associated fractures was analyzed in 67 children using elbow radiographs. Treatment for the displaced elbow joint was performed by closed reduction and proper immobilization. Surgical intervention was applied to restore the correct alignment of the fracture. Mayo Elbow Performance Score (MEPS) was used to measure elbow joint function.Incidence of pure dislocation was observed in 7

Fracture-dislocations of the elbow can be difficult to treat, with unsatisfactory results in some cases. In general, it is preferable to preserve the fractured radial head when possible, but some patients present a unique treatment challenge because of extremely comminuted fractures and bone loss. In these cases, the only options available are radial head prosthesis or allograft. The authors present a case of a 45-year-old man with a fracture-dislocation of the left elbow that was treated with an allograft of the radial head and neck because of extreme comminution of the fracture. There have b

In this article, we present a case of humeral biepicondylar fracture dislocation concomitant with ulnar nerve injury in a seventeen year-old male patient. Physical examination of our patient in the emergency room revealed a painful, edematous and deformed-looking left elbow joint. Hypoesthesia of the little finger was also diagnosed on the left hand. Radiological assessment ended up with a posterior fracture dislocation of the elbow joint accompanied by intra-articular loose bodies. Open reduction-Internal fixation of the fracture dislocation and ulnar nerve exploration were performed under ge

The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of elbow arthrography for detecting an occult subluxation of the radial head and for verifying the quality of reduction in children with ulnar fractures. The study involved 15 children who underwent closed reduction (with or without percutaneous pinning) based on arthrography for minimally displaced fractures with or without radial head subluxation. The mean age of the patient at the time of surgery was 6 years (range, 3-12 years). Initial diagnoses based on conventional radiographs were compared with arthrographically confirmed final diagno

Arthroscopy is emerging as an invaluable tool for diagnosing and treating elbow pathology. In addition to the advantages of less scarring, decreased risk of infection, less postoperative pain, and a more thorough visualization of the elbow joint, arthroscopy is particularly well suited to the treatment of athletes trying to minimize rehabilitation and inactivity. Indications for elbow arthroscopy now extend well beyond diagnosis and loose body removal, and include the treatment of impingement, arthritis, contractures, fragment stabilization for osteochondritis dessicans, and treatment of certa

Forty-one patients with 42 elbow dislocations, of which 13 had acute simple dislocations, 21 had fracture-dislocations and 8 had neglected elbow dislocations, were evaluated with regard to limitation of motion, pain, instability and residual neurovascular deficit. All patients with acute simple dislocation were treated with closed reduction, but the duration of immobilization before commencement of active motion varied. Open-reduction was indicated for failed closed reduction and neglected-dislocations. Internal fixation as a primary procedure was only performed for displaced fracture-dislocat

The authors have studied a particular type of traumatic lesion of the elbow which combines a fracture of the olecranon with a dislocation of both bones of the forearm, the radius and ulna remaining normally aligned to one another. The displacement was either forward (4 cases) or backward (6 cases). In some cases a partial fracture of the radial head or the lateral condyle of the humerus was also present and resulted in considerable instability. Internal fixation should always be tried but was not always possible. In one case a pedicle transplant of the medial epicondyle was made to restore a f

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the elbow skin fold extension line in Kirschner wire internal fixation of extended supracondylar humeral fractures in children.
METHODS: The clinical data of 58 children with extended supracondylar fractures of the humerus who met the selection criteria between August 2021 and July 2024 were retrospectively analyzed. In 28 cases, needle placement of medial epicondyle of humerus was performed with the assistance of the elbow skin fold extension line (study group), and 30 cases were assisted by routine touch of the medial epicondyle of the humerus (control group). CASE: We report an unusual combination of injuries, terrible triad elbow fracture dislocation with ipsilateral avulsion of the triceps, and radial shaft fracture in a 23-year-old man. He was managed surgically and had good postoperative outcomes.
CONCLUSION: Evaluation of the triceps tendon avulsion injury is difficult in this context, such as problems evaluating the rotator cuff injuries after a shoulder fracture dislocation. Because of the diagnostic difficulty, a high index of suspicion is necessary.

HYPOTHESIS: Conservative treatment of isolated coronoid fractures and fracture-dislocations focused on soft-tissue healing can provide good clinical results in the majority of patients. Our aims were (1) to evaluate the outcome of a conservative treatment protocol designed for isolated coronoid fractures with or without associated elbow dislocations (ICFs) and (2) to characterize the fractures with a dedicated image analysis protocol.
METHODS: Of 38 consecutive patients sustaining acute ICFs, 28 were treated nonsurgically after meeting specific inclusion criteria, prospectively followed up, a

A healthy, right-handed 34-year-old man was injured by repeated direct blows delivered to his left upper arm with a baseball bat. These blows led to a posterior dislocation of the elbow joint, associated with fractures of the radial head and the coronoid process. There was bone loss on the fractured joint surface of the olecranon, with simultaneous ipsilateral trauma to the ulna. The correct surgical approach in the case of such fractures is still the subject of some controversy. The treatment can have serious complications. The results of treatment are often poor, especially because of persis

Elbow fracture-dislocation is a complex injury with a combination of osseous and soft tissue disruption. Different classification systems have been used to describe the injury pattern and help guide the management. The article describes the important cross-sectional findings in complex elbow fracture-dislocation injuries based on the relatively new Wrightington classification. This includes the various elements and patterns seen in elbow fracture-dislocations providing a simple and comprehensive system to classify these injuries and help guide the surgical management. The article also describe

Intra-articular distal humerus fractures present various challenges with a wide array of treatment options. Open reduction internal fixation remains the treatment of choice. In older patient populations with poor bone quality and short-end segment fractures with articular comminution, open reduction internal fixation, however, may bring on unsurmountable technical challenges. Total elbow arthroplasty and elbow hemiarthroplasty (EHA) may offer superior functional outcomes in these cases. During EHA for fractures, the medial and lateral columns are reconstructed with the collateral ligaments to

HYPOTHESIS AND BACKGROUND: Open fractures about the elbow are an infrequent but complex injury with limited existing literature. The aims of the study were to review the treatment strategies of open elbows fractures, functional outcome and complication rates associated with the injury, and correlate the outcome with the topography of the fracture.
METHODS: Patients (n = 21) with open elbow fractures injuries over a 2-year period were analyzed. They were assessed regarding the orthoplastic characteristics of their injury as well any other associated injuries. Outcomes were assessed objectively
