Research status of diagnosis and treatment of varus-posteromedial rotatory instability of the elbow joint.

BACKGROUND: Varus-posteromedial rotatory instability (VPMRI) of the elbow is a relatively uncommon yet significant injury that can often present with subtle clinical symptoms, such as mild joint misalignment. These initial symptoms may be easily overlooked or misdiagnosed, especially in the absence of overt signs of instability. As a result, the injury is frequently missed in early stages, leading to improper or delayed treatment. If left untreated, VPMRI can result in severe long-term complications, including rapid joint degeneration, traumatic arthritis, heterotopic ossification, elbow stiff

A case of septic arthritis of the elbow joint in rheumatoid arthritis diagnosed by arthroscopic synovectomy.

We report a case of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) septic arthritis of the elbow detected by arthroscopic synovectomy in an 81-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who was initially diagnosed with a rheumatoid arthritis flare-up. The patient was administered abatacept, an antirheumatic biological agent, as the synovial fluid culture was negative. Destruction of the joint progressed despite medication, and the patient underwent arthroscopic synovectomy. MRSA was detected in the culture of the synovium that was collected intraoperatively, and septic arthritis was dia

Analysis of movement of an elbow joint with a wearable robotic exoskeleton Using OpenSim software.

Human body movement occurs as a result of a coordinated effort between the skeleton, muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and other connective tissue. The study of movement is crucial in the treatment of some neurological and musculoskeletal diseases. The advancement of science and technology has led to the development of musculoskeletal model simulation software such as OpenSim that plays a very significant role in tackling complex bioengineering challenges and assists in our understanding of human movement. Such biomechanical models of musculoskeletal systems may also facilitate medical d

Proximal tibiofibular joint dislocation in young children: Is this the nursemaid's elbow of the lower extremity?

Anterolateral dislocation of the Proximal Tibiofibular Joint (PTFJ) is a rare injury of the knee commonly resulting from violent athletic injuries in adults. Reported here are examples of this injury in a 19 month old and a 4 year old following trivial mechanisms of injury. These cases raise the question of whether this injury may be an unrecognized cause of refusal to bear weight in children in this age group.

Treatment of periprosthetic joint infection of the elbow: 15-year experience at a single institution.

BACKGROUND: Total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) can be complicated by periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) with potentially catastrophic failure. The purpose of this study was to describe the results of elbow PJI treatment at a tertiary-care referral center. METHODS: An institutional TEA database was queried for infection and reoperation after TEA. Patients who underwent irrigation and débridement (I&D) with component retention were compared with those who underwent component explantation, antibiotic spacer placement, and reimplantation of a revision TEA. RESULTS: A total of 26 patients (10 men;

Reference Values of Flexion and Supination in the Elbow Joint of a Cohort without Shoulder Pathologies.

BACKGROUND: After surgery of the long head of the biceps tendon, the examination of the biceps brachii muscle function and strength is common clinical practice. The muscle strength is usually compared with the uninjured contralateral side or with a matched pair group assuming that the uninjured side can be used as an appropriate reference. HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to define reference values of the supination and flexion strength in the elbow joint and to investigate the influence of the arm positions and various anthropometric factors. METHODS: 105 participants witho

[APPLICATION OF COMPRESSION MINI-SCREWS IN TREATMENT OF PATIENTS WITH INJURY OF ELBOW JOINT BONES].

A case report presents the experience of application of compression pileateless mini-screws (Gerbert's screws) in treatment of intra-articular fractures, which formed the elbow joint (44 cases). There were performed 32 operations concerning fracture of head of radius, 10 operations on the occasion of fractures of distal section of the humerus and 2 operations on the coronoid process. Long-term treatment results were followed-up in 31 patients during more than 6 months. On basis of analysis of treatment results the authors made a conclusion that the application of mini-screws in case of bone fr

Computed tomography of canine elbow joints affected by primary and concomitant flexor enthesopathy.

Flexor enthesopathy is an important differential diagnosis for elbow lameness in dogs. The disorder can be a primary cause of elbow lameness or concomitant with other elbow pathology. Since treatment differs for primary and concomitant forms of flexor enthesopathy, a noninvasive method for distinguishing between them is needed. In the current prospective study, computed tomographic (CT) examination was performed before and after IV injection of contrast in 17 dogs with primary flexor enthesopathy, 24 dogs with concomitant flexor enthesopathy, 13 dogs with elbow dysplasia, and seven normal dogs

Shape of articular surface of crocodilian (Archosauria) elbow joints and its relevance to sauropsids.

The determination of area and shape of articular surfaces on the limb bones of extinct archosaurs is difficult because of postmortem decomposition of the fibrous tissue and articular cartilages that provide the complex three-dimensional joint surfaces in vivo. This study aims at describing the shape of the articular cartilages in the elbow joints of six crocodilian specimens; comparing its structure with that of four birds, three testudines, and five squamates; and comparing the shapes of the surfaces of the calcified and the articular cartilages in the elbow joints of an Alligator specimen. [The anatomic basis and the clinical treatment of the elbow joint stiffness after electric injury].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the optimal method for the treatment of the elbow joint stiffness accompanied with neural injury after electrical injury. METHODS: Thirty adult cadaver elbows were fixed and dissected to observe the attachments of the ligaments and the muscles around the joint, and its relationship with the major nerves. Ten patients with electric burns with stiffness of the elbow joint were treated by means of loosening the anterior and posterior fascicles of radial and ulnar collateral ligaments, at the same time down shifting the insertion of flexor muscles, replacing the ulnar nerve

Upper extremity interaction with a deploying side airbag: a characterization of elbow joint loading.

Computer simulations, dummy experiments with a new enhanced upper extremity and small female cadaver experiments were used to analyze the small female upper extremity response under side airbag loading. After establishing a worst case initial position, three tests were performed with the fifth percentile female hybrid III anthropometric test dummy and six experiments with small female cadaver subjects. A new fifth percentile female enhanced upper extremity was developed for the dummy experiments that included a two-axis wrist load cell in addition to the existing six-axis load cells in both th

Acute posterior interosseous nerve palsy caused by a synovial haemangioma of the elbow joint.

A case is described of spontaneous posterior interosseous nerve palsy of acute onset. The initial symptoms made it difficult to distinguish the condition from tendon rupture. The diagnosis was established using ultrasound, nerve conduction studies and MRI. The patient underwent surgery to decompress the posterior interosseous nerve and the histological examination identified the tumour as a synovial haemangioma. 12 months after the operation, the patient had made a complete recovery, confirmed by EMG.
