PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Elbow joint allograft (EJA) involving the entire joint (distal humerus, proximal radius and ulna, capsuloligament structures) is a salvage technique proposed in massive bone loss, particularly in young subjects where total elbow prosthesis is contraindicated. We report our experience with seven patients, analyzing the long-term clinical and radiological outcome.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study included seven patients, mean age 42 years (21-70). All had experienced severe elbow trauma. Two patients had associated neuromuscular or vascular lesions. All patie

This article evaluates the early results of 7 humeral hemiarthroplasties of the elbow joint in 5 female rheumatoid patients using only the humeral component of the capitellocondylar prosthesis. The follow-up period was 25 to 109 months. All patients were 50 years old or younger; 3 patients were between 22 and 26 years. Because all patients were rather young, the intention was to perform a procedure that conserves a maximal amount of bone stock for future salvage procedures. One prosthesis had to be removed because of an infection unrelated to the primary procedure. The remaining bone stock pro

Terrible triad injuries of the elbow consist of elbow dislocation associated with fractures of the radial head and coronoid process and are characterized by significant instability. Variants that include an associated olecranon fracture are rare, and data regarding long-term functional outcomes and patient-reported outcome measures remain limited. We report the case of a 74-year-old female patient who sustained a terrible triad injury of the elbow associated with an ipsilateral olecranon fracture following a low-energy fall. This injury pattern has occasionally been referred to as a "terrible

OBJECTIVE: To describe the authors' surgical technique and to evaluate the final functional outcome of surgical treatment of the "terrible triad of the elbow".
METHODS: Eight patients identified with "terrible triad" injury patterns, including posterior elbow dislocation, radial head fracture and coronoid fracture, were available for a minimum of 11 months follow-up. Evaluation of functional outcome was based on Mayo elbow performance, Broberg-Morrey scores, and the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaire. Complications were also recorded.
RESULTS: Five elbows redislo

Trauma is the most common reason for amputation of the upper extremity. The morphologic and functional distinctions between the upper and lower extremities render the surgical techniques and decision-making different in many key respects. Acceptance of the prosthesis and the outcomes are improved by performing a transradial rather than a more proximal amputation. Substantial efforts, including free tissue transfers when necessary, should be made to salvage the elbow. Careful management of the peripheral nerves is critical to minimize painful neuroma formation while preserving options for possi

BACKGROUND: Overloading is hypothesized to be one of the failure mechanisms following total elbow arthroplasty (TEA). It is unclear whether the current post-operative loading instruction is compliant with reported failure mechanisms. Aim is therefore to evaluate the elbow joint load during activities of daily living (ADL) and compare these loads with reported failure limits from retrieval and finite element studies.
METHODS: A scoping review of studies until 23 November 2021 investigating elbow joint load during ADL were identified by searching PubMed/Medline and Web of Science. Studies were

Comminuted radial head fractures are usually associated with destabilizing lesions of the elbow. The radial head prosthesis (RHP) is a therapeutic alternative when fracture fixation is impossible, as it restores one of the elbow's secondary stabilizers. The aim of this study was to assess healing of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) after implantation of a RHP. All patients implanted with a RHP during the 2003-2012 period were eligible for follow-up ultrasound evaluation of MCL healing. A clinical evaluation with standardized tests (DASH and MEPS) was performed and the patients asked to eva

PURPOSE: To assess the association between cement mantle characteristics and early radiographic loosening in total elbow arthroplasty (TEA). We aimed to determine whether shorter mantle heights (<20 mm) were associated with loosening.
METHODS: We reviewed primary TEAs from a single healthcare system from 2006 to 2020. TEAs complicated by infection or performed for oncologic conditions were excluded. Initial postoperative radiographs were reviewed to determine cement mantle and component characteristics (mantle quality, mantle height, and component angulation). One-year postoperative radiograp

OBJECTIVE: Fixating an arm prosthesis with a transcutaneous bone anchor provides a more comfortable and stable attachment than conventional socket-attached prosthetics. The objective is that bone anchoring will improve prosthetic usage, reduce prosthesis rejection, and aid to functions in daily life activities.
INDICATIONS: Subjects with transhumeral amputation or elbow disarticulation and insufficient functional effect of conventional socket-attached arm prostheses.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Patients with local or systemic inflammatory processes, bone metabolism disorder, active use of chemotherap

PURPOSE: This study tests the hypothesis that there are no factors associated with removal or revision of a radial head prosthesis. A secondary analysis addressed the time to removal or revision.
METHODS: We reviewed the database of two large hospitals from 2000 to 2014 and identified 278 patients that had radial head replacement after an acute fracture or fracture dislocation of the elbow: 19 had removal and 3 had revision of the radial head implant within the study period. Explanatory variables including demographics, the type of injury, prosthesis type, surgeon, medical centre, and associa

Recognition of motion intent via surface electromyography (EMG) has become increasingly practical for prosthesis control, but lacking residual muscle sites remains a major obstacle to its use by high-level amputees. Currently, there are few approaches to upper limb prosthesis control for individuals with amputations proximal to the elbow, all of which suffer from one or more of three primary problems: invasiveness, the need for intensive training, and lacking functionality. Using surface EMG sensors placed on the lower leg and a natural mapping between degrees of freedom of the leg and the arm

Radial head replacement in complex elbow fractures (Mason III) with either bony or ligamentous injuries or interosseous membrane rupture is unquestionable. Actual modular and metallic prosthesis ease the mounting technique and ensure durability. Nevertheless, these types of prostheses are not always available in a short time in our daily practice. We present the use of a transient polymethacrylate spacer as an alternative in nonreconstructable complex radial head fractures with a unstable elbow. We assessed 38 patients between 2006 and 2007, with a median follow-up of 53.8 months. We included

BACKGROUND: Total elbow arthroplasty is an established option for the primary treatment of acute distal humeral fractures, but there are sparse data regarding elbow hemiarthroplasty (EHA) as an alternative. We present the outcome of EHA performed with a modular anatomic prosthesis and a "triceps-on" surgical technique.
METHODS: Eighteen consecutive patients underwent EHA for an acute fracture. Two patients died, leaving a study group of 16 patients with minimum 2-year follow-up. Clinical evaluation included range of motion; Mayo Elbow Performance Score; Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder

OBJECTIVE: To report the modified osteotomy and the short-term effectiveness of the total elbow joint replacement in patients of hemophilic elbow arthritis with severe flexion contracture deformity.
METHODS: This study introduced the therapeutic approach of the total elbow joint replacement in patients of hemophilic elbow arthritis with severe flexion contracture deformity, and assessed the short-term effectiveness in three cases (three elbows) of end-stage hemophilic elbow arthritis admitted from October 2020 to December 2020. The included patients were all diagnosed with hemophilia A (facto

BACKGROUND: The radial head (RH) is in close relationship with the elbow ligaments and is crucial for the elbow biomechanics. Comminuted RH fractures and radiocapitellar arthritis are indications for RH excision and replacement with a prosthesis. An RH prosthesis should closely resemble the natural anatomy both in size and shape. This anthropometric study collects raw data on the shape and size of the RH and investigates correlations between RH measurements and other radius landmarks to help design more anatomically accurate RH prostheses.
METHODS: The present study was conducted on 68 dried

BACKGROUND: It is generally accepted that prosthetic elbow replacement should be avoided in young patients because of an anticipated high rate of early failure. The purpose of this paper was to define the success, prosthetic survival rate, and problems encountered in patients who were treated with a semiconstrained total elbow arthroplasty when they were forty years of age or less.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 758 patients who had undergone primary arthroplasty with the Coonrad-Morrey total elbow prosthesis for any reason between 1982 and 2003. We identified fifty-five

BACKGROUND: In acute treatment of radial head fractures, a radial head prosthesis can be considered if open reduction and internal fixation are not technically feasible.
METHODS: We reviewed the data of 27 consecutive bipolar Judet radial head prostheses implanted in patients with unreconstructable radial head fractures and no other concomitant fractures (coronoid or olecranon factures). The lesions of the lateral collateral ligament were rated according to the McKee classification. Twenty-three patients with more than ten-year follow-up participated in this retrospective study All patients u

BACKGROUND: Sideswipe injuries of elbow often poses significant functional loss resulting from devastating injuries involving osseoligamentous structures as well as multilevel soft tissue injuries around the elbow. Inspite of treatment, no conscientious treatment opinion is available in the literature to provide optimum functional outcome. The objective of this study is to evaluate the results of prosthetic replacement of old healed sideswipe injuries of elbow with gross dysfunctional disabilities resulting from loss of bones and muscles around the joint.

PURPOSE: Wear of polyethylene bearings represents a limiting factor in the long-term success of total elbow prostheses. Bearing stress is 1 factor contributing to accelerated wear. Physiological loading of total elbow prostheses and implant design influence upon bearing stresses have not been well described. This study evaluates bearing stresses in 3 commercially available implant designs under loads associated with daily living.
METHODS: Motion tracking from a healthy volunteer helped establish a musculoskeletal model to simulate flexor and extensor muscle activation at 0°, 45°, and 90° of s
