Epidemiological investigation on Clonorchis sinensis in human population in an area of South China.

To detect the prevalence of Clonorchis sinensis, one of the important helminthes in the human population of the Guangxi Region where Schistosoma japonicum was endemic but eliminated in the late 1980s, the Kato-Katz thick smear technique was used for examining fecal samples from selected townships in Hengxian County. Among 1,552 people examined, 491 (31.6%) were found infected with C. sinensis. By counting eggs per gram feces (EPG), it was found that the light, moderate, and heavy intensities of infection occupied 55.4, 33.0, and 11.6%, respectively, with an average EPG of 4,845 in the infected

Microinjection of RFRP-1 in the central nucleus of amygdala decreases food intake in the rat.

Several members of the RFamide peptide family are known to have role in the regulation of feeding. For example, neuropeptide FF and prolactin-releasing peptide cause anorexigenic, while 26RFa and QRFP result in orexigenic effects in rodents. I.c.v. microinjection of neuropeptide RFRP-1 significantly reduced food and water intake in chicks. However, feeding related effects of RFRP-1 have not been studied in mammals yet. The central part of amygdala (CeA) is essentially involved in the regulation of feeding and body weight. RFRP-1 positive nerve cells were detected in the rat hypothalamus and RF

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor redistribution in the dorsal root ganglia correlates with neuropathic pain inhibition after resiniferatoxin treatment.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its cognate receptor, the tyrosine kinase B (TrkB), are normally expressed in neurons and implicated in multiple pathological conditions. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor is produced in the central nervous system microglia in response to noxious stimuli and appear to potentiate central sensitization. Resiniferatoxin (RTX) is an excitotoxic agonist of the vanilloid receptor 1 (VR1), a cation channel protein considered an integrator for nociception. Resiniferatoxin, administered into the dorsal root ganglia (DRG), selectively elim

An Open-Source Restraint System for Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Awake Rats.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a critical tool for translational neuroscience, but preclinical studies frequently rely on anesthesia, which alters neural activity and limits comparison with human studies. Awake rodent functional MRI (fMRI) enables investigation of brain function under physiologically relevant conditions; however, its implementation is constrained by the need for anesthesia during restraint setup. We developed and evaluated a restraint system and habituation protocol for awake rat fMRI. Ten rats were studied: an awake group and an anesthetized group (three males and two fe

Primate adult brain cell autotransplantation produces behavioral and biological recovery in 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine-induced parkinsonian St. Kitts monkeys.

The potential for "replacement cells" to restore function in Parkinson's disease has been widely reported over the past 3 decades, rejuvenating the central nervous system rather than just relieving symptoms. Most such experiments have used fetal or embryonic sources that may induce immunological rejection and generate ethical concerns. Autologous sources, in which the cells to be implanted are derived from recipients' own cells after reprogramming to stem cells, direct genetic modifications, or epigenetic modifications in culture, could eliminate many of these problems. In a previous study on

Repurposing dimethyl fumarate as an antiepileptogenic and disease-modifying treatment for drug-resistant epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy affects over 65 million people worldwide and significantly burdens patients, caregivers, and society. Drug-resistant epilepsy occurs in approximately 30% of patients and growing evidence indicates that oxidative stress contributes to the development of such epilepsies. Activation of the Nrf2 pathway, which is involved in cellular defense, offers a potential strategy for reducing oxidative stress and epilepsy treatment. Dimethyl fumarate (DMF), an Nrf2 activator, exhibits antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and is used to treat multiple sclerosis. METHODS: The expres

Ontogeny of dopamine agonist-induced sensitization: role of NMDA receptors.

In contrast to adults, preweanling rats exhibit behavioral sensitization for only a few days after cessation of dopamine (DA) agonist treatment. The reasons for this ontogenetic difference are uncertain, but maturational changes in the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor may be responsible, since stimulation of these receptors is necessary for the development of DA agonist-induced sensitization in adult rats. The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between NMDA receptor functioning and DA agonist-induced sensitization during the preweanling period. To that end, 17-day

New insight in beryllium toxicity excluding exposure to beryllium-containing dust: accumulation patterns, target organs, and elimination.

There is much contradiction between different experimental studies on beryllium (Be) toxicity. The majority of studies focus on occupational pathologies, caused by the exposure to Be dust. However, Be pollution may affect wide population groups through other exposure routes. The discrepancies between experimental studies may be attributed to the lack of adequate Be toxicity model since conventional administration routes are hampered by high acidity and low solubility of Be compounds. This study was aimed to develop a novel way to implement Be toxicity avoiding side effects, related to high aci

Long-term effects of clomethiazole in a model of global ischemia.

The failure of neuroprotective drugs in clinical trials has raised questions about the predictive value of animal models. To address this issue we reexamined the efficacy of clomethiazole using functional and histological outcome measures in combination with long-term survival times. Gerbils were exposed to 5 min of global ischemia and received 400 mg/ml clomethiazole (via osmotic minipump) plus a bolus injection (60 mg/kg) 30 min after ischemia. Brain temperature was maintained at approximately 36.5 degrees C during ischemia and for the first 30 min after ischemia, and was monitored in all gr

Orthodromic Atrioventricular Reentry Bradycardia and Tachycardia Caused by an Accessory Pathway in Horses.

BACKGROUND: Accessory pathways (APs) are muscular bundles directly connecting the atria and ventricles, bypassing the atrioventricular (AV) node-His-Purkinje system. Anterograde conduction along the AP results in ventricular preexcitation. A retrograde conducting AP allows ventriculo-atrial (VA) conduction, creating a reentry circuit that mediates orthodromic atrioventricular reentry tachycardia (OAVRT). This condition is well described in humans and small animals, but has not been reported previously in horses. OBJECTIVES: Describe clinical and electrocardiographic findings of horses with re

A period of transient synaptic density unbalancing in the motor cortex after peripheral nerve injury and the involvement of microglial cells.

Some types of peripheral nerve injury lead to limb deafferentation, which leads to remodeling of body representation areas in different parts of the brain, such as in the primary motor cortex and primary sensory cortex. This plasticity is a consequence of several cellular events, such as the emergence and elimination of synapses in these areas. Beside neurons, microglial cells are intimately involved in synapse plasticity, especially in synaptic pruning. In this study, we investigated the transient changes in synaptic density in the primary motor and sensory cortex after different types of per

Ethanol-induced memory impairment in a discriminative avoidance task is state-dependent.

BACKGROUND: A considerable amount of experimental evidence has demonstrated ethanol (EtOH) induced amnestic effects following EtOH administration during pretraining in a variety of tasks both in humans and in laboratory animals. Although the phenomenon of state-dependency is known to play a critical role in memory deficits induced by both pharmacological and nonpharmacological pretraining perturbations, the involvement of this phenomenon in EtOH-induced anterograde amnesia has been overlooked. This study aimed to investigate the role of state-dependency in EtOH-induced amnestic effects and its

In vivo studies on rhodanese encapsulation in mouse carrier erythrocytes.

Resealed erythrocytes containing sodium thiosulfate and rhodanese (CRBC) are being employed as a new approach in the antagonism of cyanide intoxication. In earlier in vitro studies, the behavior of red blood cells containing rhodanese and sodium thiosulfate was investigated with regard to their properties and their capability of metabolizing cyanide to thiocyanate. The present studies are concerned with the properties of these rhodanese-containing carrier erythrocytes in the intact animal. These carrier erythrocytes were administered intravenously and the survival of the encapsulated enzyme wa

Sulfur compounds in therapy: radiation-protective agents, amphetamines, and mucopolysaccharide sulfation.

OBJECTIVE: Sulfur-containing compounds have been used in the search for whole-body radiation-protective compounds, in the design of amphetamine derivatives that retain appetite-suppressive effects but lack most behavioral effects characteristic of amphetamines, and in the search for the cause of kidney stone formation in recurrently stoneforming patients. METHODS: Organic synthetic procedures were used to prepare radiation-protective compounds having a variety of sulfur-containing functional groups, and to prepare amphetamine derivatives having electron-attracting sulfur functions. The brain-stem auditory-evoked response in the big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus) to clicks and frequency-modulated sweeps.

Three experiments were performed to evaluate the effects of stimulus level on the brain-stem auditory-evoked response (BAER) in the big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus), a species that uses frequency-modulated (FM) sonar sounds for echolocation. In experiment 1, the effects of click level on the BAER were investigated. Clicks were presented at levels of 30 to 90 dB pSPL in 10-dB steps. Each animal responded reliably to clicks at levels of 50 dB pSPL and above, showing a BAER containing four peaks in the first 3-4 ms from click onset (waves i-iv). With increasing click level, BAER peak amplitude in

Evidence for peripheral and central actions of codeine to dysregulate swallowing in the anesthetized cat.

Systemic administration of opioids has been associated with aspiration and swallow dysfunction in humans. We speculated that systemic administration of codeine would induce dysfunctional swallowing and that this effect would have a peripheral component. Experiments were conducted in spontaneously breathing, anesthetized cats. The animals were tracheotomized and electromyogram (EMG) electrodes were placed in upper airway and chest wall respiratory muscles for recording swallow related motor activity. The animals were allocated into three groups: vagal intact (VI), cervical vagotomy (CVx), and s

Seizure-associated central apnea in a rat model: Evidence for resetting the respiratory rhythm and activation of the diving reflex.

Respiratory derangements, including irregular, tachypnic breathing and central or obstructive apnea can be consequences of seizure activity in epilepsy patients and animal models. Periods of seizure-associated central apnea, defined as periods >1s with rapid onset and offset of no airflow during plethysmography, suggest that seizures spread to brainstem respiratory regions to disrupt breathing. We sought to characterize seizure-associated central apneic episodes as an indicator of seizure impact on the respiratory rhythm in rats anesthetized with urethane and given parenteral kainic acid to in
