Lead poisoning was demonstrated in two gray-headed woodpeckers (Picus canus) and one white-backed woodpecker (Dendrocopus leucotos) in Sweden; they had liver lead levels between 9.4 and 26.2 mg(-1) wet weight. At necropsy one gray-headed woodpecker showed signs of emaciation and the other one had severe traumatic injuries, caused by a cat. The white-backed woodpecker died in the transportation box during a translocation program. The source of the lead could not be determined, but it was suspected that it may have originated from lead pellets shot into trees and picked out by the woodpeckers du

We report a 67 years old male that consulted due to bloody diarrhea of several months of evolution and emaciation. According to endoscopic and radiological findings, the diagnosis of severe ulcerative colitis was made. Fifteen days after admission, the patient was subjected to an emergency total colectomy due to a toxic megacolon. The pathological study showed an ischemic colitis with extensive longitudinal ulcers in the antimesenteric border, presence of granulation tissue with inflammation and transmural fibrosis. Intestinal transit was reconstituted six months later and after 12 months of f

Rectal stricture occurred in each of 23 pigs submitted for necropsy from eight Indiana farms. Each stricture was an annular cicatrization of the rectal wall, 2.0-5.0 cm anterior to the anorectal junction. Emaciation, colonic dilatation and compression atrophy of abdominal and thoracic viscera were a result of chronic obstipation and inanition. Most pigs with strictures had severe enteric disease 4-8 weeks before the strictures occurred. Salmonella typhimurium was isolated from seven of the eight groups of pigs examined. Ulcerative proctitis, a possible precursor of rectal stricture, was freque

Three dogs that presented to the emergency service in severely emaciated body conditions were admitted to the hospital for monitoring and refeeding. During their hospitalization, all three dogs developed electrolyte derangements or required supplementation to prevent hypophosphatemia and hypomagnesemia. Additionally, all dogs developed hyperlactatemia, which was suspected to be secondary to thiamine deficiency. Two dogs were reported to have cardiac abnormalities, including cardiac arrhythmias, systolic dysfunction, and spontaneous echogenic contrast. These cases highlight the complexity of re

In 1849, the Irish Professor of Surgery, Sir Robert William Smith, by publishing his "Treatise on the Pathology, Diagnosis and Treatment of Neuroma", collected six previous examples of "general development of neuromatous tumours" and reported three further cases (two personal and one referred) of what is nowadays known as neurofibromatosis. Among these latter cases, there was a 35-year-old cattle-driver, John McCann, who was first admitted at hospital in 1840 because of a large tumour on the right side of his neck thought to be malignant (and a second tumour sublingually) but not operated. Measurement of variant Met30 transthyretin is diagnostic for a patients with familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy (FAP) type I. The elder brother first noticed numbness of the feet at 64 years of age, and developed weakness of the legs. A few years later, he noticed numbness of the hands, and he was admitted to the hospital at 67 years of age. He was emaciated and had hoarseness and macroglossia. He had moderate muscle atrophy and weakness of all extremities with distal predominance. Deep tendon reflexes were hypoactive in the upper limbs and absent in the lower limbs. Thirty-eight young crocodiles that were emaciated and were euthanased or were found dead on 12 farms in Irian Jaya were examined post mortem. Major diseases were coccidiosis (nine crocodiles), pentastomiasis (four), visceral gout (two) and bacterial pneumonia and septicaemia (two). Other diseases and infections were steatitis, fungal pneumonia, gastric capillariasis, haemogregarine infection, ascariasis, filarioid infection and the presence of flukes in the intestine, kidney and blood. Multiple parasitism due to the collection of hatchlings in the wild was considered the primary cause of the i

The clinical, gross and histopathological findings in 50 sheep affected with Johne's disease are described. Clinically 90% were emaciated and 20% showed severe diarrhoea. On necropsy there was thickening of the walls of the intestines, particularly of the ileum, caecum and less frequently the jejunum, but in 36% of sheep the changes were only mild. Histologically there was a granulomatous enteritis, typhlitis and colitis, with the most severe changes in the terminal ileum. High numbers of acid-fast organisms were present in the terminal ileum in over 70% of sheep. Mycobacterium paratuberculosi

PURPOSE: The primary aims of this four week pilot randomized clinical trial (RCT) involving a targeted cognitive intervention (TCI, n = 25) compared to an expectancy matched active control intervention (EMACI, n = 24), in a sample of cancer survivors were to: determine recruitment and retention rates; evaluate preliminary efficacy to improve three objective measures of cognitive function (i.e., attention, working memory, multi-tasking); evaluate adherence rates for and satisfaction with the interventions, and evaluate for treatment-related adverse events (e.g., nausea, motion sickness).

A freshwater angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare) hatchery experienced variable levels of emaciation, poor growth rates, swollen coelomic cavities, anorexia, listlessness, and increased mortality within their fish. Multiple chemotherapeutic trials had been attempted without success. In affected fish, large numbers of protozoa were identified both histologically and ultrastructurally associated with the gastric mucosa. The youngest cohort of parasitized fish was the most severely affected and demonstrated the greatest morbidity and mortality. The protozoa were morphologically most consistent with C

Characterization of elderly (> or = 65) patients with Graves' disease (GD) was discussed. Emaciation was the symptom that was most frequently found in elderly patients. The presence of goiter, exophthalmos and increased appetite decreased with age, while weight loss, anorexia and arrhythmia increased. Elderly patients often have serious complications such as congestive heart failure and atrial fibrillation. Serum levels of free T3, free T4 and TSH receptor antibodies were significantly lower in elderly patients. In addition to fewer clinical signs and symptoms of GD in elderly patients, promin

Etiologies of infectious diarrhoeas in hospitalised adults have been studied during one year; research of cryptosporidium and isospora oocysts is being made with Henriksen-Pohlenz and Kato methods. Diarrhoea is associated with a positive HIV serology in 40% cases. Cryptosporidium spp is found in 38% of cases. In 91% cases of cryptosporidiosis HIV serology is positive. Cryptosporidiosis is the main cause of AIDS diarrhoeas in Mali. 3 cases of isosporiasis are associated with cryptosporidiosis in AIDS patients. Emaciation and dehydration are the main signs of severity. Diarrhoea's profusion, its

A 1-day-old male infant with congenital short small bowel was transferred to our hospital because of bilious vomiting and abdominal distension. An exploratory laparotomy performed at the age of 8 days revealed malrotation without any volvulus or stenosis of the small intestine, which was 45 cm long. There were no other anomalies except absence of the appendix. Postoperative nutritional support was by intravenous hyperalimentation and administration of elemental diet. However, parenteral nutrition was discontinued because of hyperbilirubinaemia. The patient died from marked emaciation at 2 mont

A 57-year-old man was referred to our department because of progressive shortness of breath and emaciation. He had experienced pneumothorax three times in the past five years. The patient radiologically showed mild upper-lobe predominant airspace consolidation and severe platythorax and was clinically diagnosed with idiopathic pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis (PPFE). Although the wedge-shaped shadows in the bilateral lung apexes did not significantly progress, his platythorax gradually worsened during the clinical course. He ultimately died of chronic respiratory failure 1.2 years after the di

Although birds of prey are commonly subclinically infected by Toxoplasma gondii tissue cysts, clinical disease is relatively rare in these species. The present report describes a rare case of fatal toxoplasmosis in a juvenile bald eagle in New Brunswick. Necropsy investigation revealed severe emaciation and poxviral dermatitis which partially obscured the palpebral fissures. Microscopically there was severe lymphoplasmacytic inflammation and necrosis of the lung that was associated with abundant protozoal tachyzoites. Infection with T. gondii was confirmed in the lung via immunohistochemistry

A 49-year-old Japanese woman with polycystic liver disease (PLD) was admitted for right hypochondrial pain. CT showed a huge enhancing mass in the liver. She tested negative for other liver diseases, such as hepatitis B and C and alcoholic liver disease. After the patient expired due to hepatic failure, an autopsy revealed poorly differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) surrounded by multiple hepatic cysts. The small amount of residual hepatic parenchyma showed nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) with severe steatosis. Severe emaciation was also apparent. This case suggests that maln

Anorexia nervosa is a serious psychiatric disorder accompanied by high morbidity and mortality. It is characterized by emaciation due to self-starvation and displays a unique hormonal profile. Alterations in gonadal axis, growth hormone resistance with low insulin-like growth factor I levels, hypercortisolemia and low triiodothyronine levels are almost universally present and constitute an adaptive response to malnutrition. Bone metabolism is likewise affected resulting in low bone mineral density, reduced bone accrual and increased fracture risk. Skeletal deficits often persist even after rec

A 3-year-old girl with Graves' disease developed a generalized convulsion as a result of hypoglycemia (25 mg/dL). At the time of the hypoglycemic seizure, her plasma adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) level (1460 pg/mL) was extremely high, but her serum cortisol level (28.4 microg/dL) was relatively low given the severe stress. The cortisol-releasing hormone (CRH) provocation test done after thyroid function had improved revealed normal ACTH and cortisol responses. Since there was no other cause of hypoglycemia, such as hyperinsulinemia, long-term starvation, suddenly advanced emaciation, or prolonged

Large breeding populations of California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) are located on San Miguel and San Nicolas Islands in the Southern California Bight. In 2001, there was a substantial increase in pup mortality in late summer and fall. From June 2002 to January 2003, 208 freshly dead pups were examined on San Miguel Island, the most western of the Channel Islands off the coast of southern California. Tissues from 186 of these pups were examined histologically. The primary lesions in 133 (72%) of the pups were an enteritis associated with hookworms and infections in major organs. Emacia

Tumor-induced hypercalcemia is a frequent complication of advanced cancers, but it has been rarely reported in patients with sarcoma. We report a 16 year-old boy presenting with polyuria, polydipsia and severe dehydration. Laboratory examination revealed severe hypercalcemia (serum calcium 23 mg/dl) which caused emaciation and was accompanied by low serum phosphorus and suppressed parathyroid hormone. Diagnostic imaging revealed a huge anterior mediastinal mass. Hypercalcemia was successfully treated with pamidronate, a bisphosphonate, and the patient underwent surgical resection. Pathological
