Barriers and Facilitators to Point-of-Care Ultrasound Utilization Among Emergency Medicine Residents and Emergency Nurse Practitioners Following Institutional Training.

PURPOSE: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) serves as a critical diagnostic tool in emergency medicine; however, a persistent gap remains between competency acquired during training and consistent clinical application. This study sought to identify barriers and facilitators influencing POCUS examination frequency among emergency medicine (EM) residents and emergency nurse practitioners after institutional training, and to examine the association between individual-level factors and the frequency of POCUS examinations. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted in the Departmen

Prospective Validation of the Ottawa 3DY Scale by Geriatric Emergency Management Nurses to Identify Impaired Cognition in Older Emergency Department Patients.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Assessment of older emergency department (ED) patients with cognitive impairment is challenging because few tools exist that can be quickly administered by front-line practitioners. Our objective is to validate the Ottawa 3DY Scale, a 4-question screening tool for cognitive impairment, in older ED patients and compare its performance with that of the Animal Fluency Test. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study in 2 EDs and enrolled a convenience sample of patients aged 75 years or older with no history of cognitive impairment. Eligible patients were assessed by geria

Workplace Stressors Associated With Burnout Among Emergency Nurses and Other Emergency Healthcare Professionals: A Convergent Parallel Approach With a Multilevel Design.

BACKGROUND: Burnout assessments yield results of up to 65% for all emergency healthcare professionals and 53% for emergency nurses. We conducted a mixed methods study using a convergent parallel approach and a multilevel design with emergency nurses and other healthcare professionals to identify workplace stressors associated with burnout and prioritize those stressors for improvement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Emergency healthcare professionals were recruited from the emergency department of a large acute care hospital. Participants completed the abbreviated Maslach Burnout Inventory and a work

Emergency Nurses' Perceived Confidence in Participating in the Discharge Process of Congestive Heart Failure Patients From the Emergency Department: A Quantitative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Adults with exacerbated heart failure (HF) who present to the emergency department (ED) generally are readmitted. However, Hispanic HF patients are more likely to be admitted than Whites. Studies show the importance of nurse-led interventions in the ED discharge process, but registered nurse (RN) confidence in performing discharge tasks has not been assessed. Greater nurse confidence leads to improved task performance, and potentially reduced HF readmission, lowering cost of care. This study aimed to gain insight into ED RNs' perceived self-confidence in discharge tasks with stab

From the community to the emergency department: A study of hospital emergency department nursing practices from the perspective of carers of a loved one with Borderline Personality Disorder.

Carers of loved ones with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) often present to Emergency Departments (ED) during acute crisis situations. The initial contact for the carer and consumer in distress is often an emergency nurse. By gaining a greater understanding of carers (18+) perspectives on ED nursing practices when consumers with BPD are requiring crisis support, knowledge about preferred and best practice can be gained. To obtain this knowledge, four semi-structured focus group interviews were undertaken with a purposive sample of 13 carers through existing carer networks. Transcripts wer

Changes in emergency department visits by nursing home residents before, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic: Retrospective study.

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted emergency department (ED) visits by nursing home (NH) residents, leading to notable shifts in visit rates, characteristics, and outcomes over time. This retrospective study analyzed all-cause ED visits among NH residents aged over 65 at a large Italian hospital from 2019 to 2022. Non-COVID-19 visits declined sharply by 63.8% in 2020 and continued to remain below pre-pandemic levels in the following years. Compared to 2019, the risk of respiratory disease-related visits decreased significantly in 2021 and 2022. Conversely, the risk of mental health-r

Dedicated nursing care pathway improved management of opioid-poisoned patients in the emergency department: A before-after observational study.

OBJECTIVE: Opioid overdose is increasing and accounts for two-thirds of poisoning deaths. Opioid induced respiratory depression is life-threatening and can be under-recognised even in the hospital setting. We aimed to evaluate the effect of a care pathway on the management of opioid-poisoned patients. METHODS: This is a before-after observational study following the introduction of a nursing care pathway for opioid-poisoned patients presenting to ED. Medical records were retrospectively reviewed pre (6-month period 1 year prior) and post (9-month period following) the introduction of the path

Effects of emergency nursing interventions on the outcome of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: A randomized controlled trial.

With the development of healthcare concepts, nursing interventions are gradually being emphasized in the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. This study aims to explore the impact of emergency nursing interventions on outcomes for patients with COPD. Eighty-four patients with COPD were included in the analysis, the control group received routine nursing (42 cases), and the research group received emergency nursing (42 cases). We compared the pulmonary functions of the 2 groups: forced vital capacity, peak expiratory flow, forced expiratory volume in the first sec

Emergency treatment and nursing of children with severe pneumonia complicated by heart failure and respiratory failure: 10 case reports.

Pneumonia refers to lung inflammation caused by different pathogens or other factors, and is a common pediatric disease occurring in infants and young children. It is closely related to the anatomical and physiological characteristics of infants and young children and is more frequent during winter and spring, or sudden changes in temperature. Pneumonia is a serious disease that poses a threat to children's health and its morbidity and mortality rank first, accounting for 24.5-65.2% of pediatric inpatients. Due to juvenile age, severe illness and rapid changes, children often suffer acute hear

Genomics in psychiatric Nurse Practitioner practice: Moving from emerging trend to essential competency.

Genomics is increasingly influencing psychiatric practice as evidence links genetic variation with neurodevelopmental disorders, treatment response, and complex psychiatric presentations. Psychiatric nurse practitioners are well positioned to incorporate genomics into patient assessment and management; however, familiarity with testing options and clinical indications remains limited. This column reviews key genomic considerations for psychiatric practice, including pharmacogenomics, chromosomal microarray analysis, and exome or genome sequencing. Clinical "red flags," such as developmental de

Body awareness and secondary traumatic stress among emergency nurses: A mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Emergency nurses are routinely exposed to workplace trauma, placing them at increased risk of secondary traumatic stress. Although body awareness has been proposed as a potential coping resource for stress regulation, its role in relation to secondary traumatic stress remains poorly understood. AIM: To examine the association between body awareness and secondary traumatic stress among emergency nurses and to explore how body awareness is experienced and used as a coping resource to workplace trauma.
