INTRODUCTION: Smartphone use among adolescents and young adults is often framed as problematic, particularly in relation to nomophobia. However, such perspectives may overlook the developmental and relational contexts in which smartphone use occurs. This study examined how Filipino young people with moderate to severe nomophobia experienced smartphone use within their emotional and relational lives.
METHODS: A qualitative multiple-case study, guided by a constructivist perspective, was conducted in 2024 with 12 Filipino participants aged 18-22 years (6 female, 6 male). Participants completed

Sleep is an essential biological process regulating emotions and involving interactions between limbic and cortical systems. The amygdala, hippocampus, insula, and anterior cingulate cortex function as a bottom-up network for emotional processing, whereas prefrontal regions control the top-down aspect. Neurophysiological, neurochemical, and network modifications affect these circuits during sleep stages i.e. rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM (NREM) phases. Sleep deprivation throws this balance out of synchrony, making emotional responsiveness increasingly pronounced and regulation more comp

Emotional regulation (ER) is defined as the ability to manage emotions based on how they are experienced, evaluated, and expressed. ER involves cognitive reappraisal (CR) and expressive suppression (ES) strategies which are postulated to contribute to depression, anxiety, and stress. This study aims to explore the association between emotional regulation with depression, anxiety and stress among Malaysian undergraduate students. 278 undergraduate students from four faculties of a university in the Klang Valley randomly chosen using an online randomizer participated in an online cross-sectional

The emotion dysregulation and impulsivity are highly associated with alcohol use disorder (AUD). This study explored the role of impulsivity and emotion dysregulation and the interaction with adult probable ADHD on alcohol-related quality of life (QoL). In this observational trial, we analyzed data from the randomized TRAIN study, which compared efficacy of two cognitive training programs in patients AUD recently detoxified at 5 centers in France from February 2019 to February 2023, and who completed child and adult ADHD screening data (WURS + ARSR, n = 206 of 226). We collected baseline data

BACKGROUND: While the serotonin transporter (SLC6A4) gene, 5-HTTLPR, interacts with the social environment to influence both emotional self-regulation and smoking behavior, less is known about interactions between emotional self-regulation and 5-HTTLPR or their joint influence on tobacco use. Here, we examined such interactions among psychiatric inpatients, the population with the highest rates of smoking.
METHODS: Participants (506 adults) were psychiatric inpatients at The Menninger Clinic in Houston TX between 2012 and 16. Most were white (89%), male (55%), with a mean age of 32.3 years. P

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Immunosuppression is characteristic of the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and is accompanied by an adaptive disgust response to reduce contact with pathogens. However, research has not examined the effects of emotion regulation on disgust during the menstrual cycle. Accordingly, the present study examines the effect of suppression and reappraisal on disgust during the luteal and follicular phases of the menstrual cycle.
METHOD: Menstrual cycle phase was estimated in a sample of naturally cycling women (n = 73), and those in the follicular or luteal phase were as

BACKGROUND: Nonsyndromic craniosynostosis may manifest with complex behavioral, attentional, and emotional sequelae. The authors characterized higher level brain connectivity in adolescent nonsyndromic craniosynostosis patients in response to emotional frustration.
METHODS: Surgically corrected patients older than 9 years with nonsyndromic craniosynostosis were age/sex/handedness matched to controls. Patients participated in a "go/no-go" task, structured as win/lose/recovery paradigms. BioImage Suite was used to analyze whole-brain intrinsic connectivity between tasks with cluster-corrected g

Adjustment Disorders (AD) is a very common mental health problem in primary care. Only general treatment guidelines are available for its treatment. Our research team has developed a cognitive-behavioural treatment (CBT) supported by Virtual reality (EMMA system) that has shown its utility in the treatment of AD. EMMA is a VR adaptive display that adapts its presentation to the patient' therapeutic needs. So far, researchers have been centered on how to use the Information and Communication Technologies to deliver treatment within the therapeutic context. TEO is a completely open Online Emotio

The purposes of this study were to compare the Bayley Scales of Infant Development (BSID-II) scores at 8 and 18-22 months adjusted age of a cohort of 47 extremely low birth weight infants and to determine whether there was an association between changes in test scores and infant behavior as measured by the Behavioral Rating Scale of the BSID-II at 18-22 months adjusted age. Psychomotor Developmental Index scores did not differ between the two testing points (p = .17), whereas the Mental Developmental Index (MDI) scores dropped significantly (p = .006). Research to date focuses on how people regulate their emotions, but more commonly, people do not regulate. We built a bottom-up taxonomy of reasons for investigating why. In Study 1a (N = 250 U.K. community members; collected in 2023) people who did not regulate during a recent stressful event were asked to describe their reasons. We established a list of 14 reasons, and a new sample rated their agreement (Study 1b, N = 248, United Kingdom; 2023). Study 2 (N = 326, Australia; 2024) investigated reason frequency in everyday life using experience sampling. Our studies were conducted in English a

Research on emotion regulation (ER) and aggression has increased rapidly in the past years, but heterogeneity across studies make integration of findings challenging. To estimate the size and consistency of the relationship between ER and aggression we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis. In total, 16,369 articles were retrieved from Scopus, PubMed, PsycINFO, and CINAHL, and 137 articles (171 studies) provided 918 effect sizes from a total sample of N = 252,605. Multilevel models showed significant pooled relationships, with small-to-moderate effects. Use of adaptive strategies was

Schizotypy is a multidimensional construct encompassing clinical and subclinical expressions of schizophrenia-spectrum psychopathology that is composed of positive, negative, and disorganized dimensions. These dimensions are differentially associated with disruptions in emotional experience; however, few studies have examined the association of multidimensional schizotypy with emotion regulation (ER). The present study employed experience sampling methodology (ESM) to examine the hypothesis that there are differential associations of positive, negative, and disorganized schizotypy with ER stra

Cluster B personality disorders, including Borderline, Histrionic, Narcissistic, and Antisocial personality disorders, collectively affect up to 5.5% of the population. These disorders are characterized by strong emotional responses; however, little research compares specific symptomatology with emotion regulation ability. The current study examines the relationship between subscales of the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale and symptomatology across Cluster B disorders in a mixed non-clinical sample. In Study 1 (N = 325), participants completed self-report measures assessing emotion reg

The high prevalence of mental health problems, especially in adolescence, promotes research on psychological interventions. Recently, focus has shifted from disorder specific to transdiagnostic interventions. Since emotion regulation (ER) underlies various mental disorders, targeting this transdiagnostic mechanism is Particulary interesting. The current study aimed to investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of an emotion regulation training for children and adolescents (EuREKA) in six adolescents (M = 12.50, SD = 1.52; 50% girls) enrolled in an inpatient treatment center for internalizin

Adaptive emotion regulation can buffer against cardiac reactivity under acute stress. However, research on the effectiveness of emotion regulation in the face of interpersonal stress is scarce. We therefore conducted an experiment investigating whether emotion regulation might buffer against parasympathetically mediated cardiac reactivity during conflict. Couples engaged in a 10-min conflict discussion (N = 253 participants included in the final analyses). Prior to the discussion, one partner per couple was randomly assigned to one of three experimental conditions (acceptance, cognitive reappr

BACKGROUND: Emotion dysregulation (ED), the difficulty in modulating which emotions are felt, and when and how they are expressed or experienced, has been implicated in an array of psychological disorders. Despite potentially different manifestations depending on the disorder, this symptom is emerging as a transdiagnostic construct that can and should be targeted early, given the associations with various maladaptive behaviors as early as childhood and adolescence. As such, our goal was to investigate the psychotherapeutic interventions used to address ED and gauge their effectiveness, safety,

Sleep has a profound effect on our mood, but insight in the mechanisms underlying this association is still lacking. We tested whether emotion regulation is a mediator in the relationship between fragmented sleep and mood disturbance. The effect of fragmented sleep on the emotion regulation strategies, including cognitive reappraisal, distraction, acceptance and suppression ability, was assessed. We further tested whether the use of these strategies, as well as rumination and self-criticism, mediated the association between fragmented sleep and negative and positive affect. Participants (N = 6

Emotion regulation is important for psychological health and can be achieved by implementing various strategies. How one regulates emotions is critical for maximizing psychological health. Few studies, however, tested the psychological correlates of different emotion regulation strategies across multiple cultures. In a preregistered cross-cultural study (N = 3,960, 19 countries), conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, we assessed associations between the use of seven emotion regulation strategies (situation selection, distraction, rumination, cognitive reappraisal, acceptance, expressive supp

Self-compassion (SC) seems to play an important role in improving Emotion Regulation (ER). Nevertheless, the results of previous studies regarding the links between SC and ER are not consistent, especially facing diverse models of ER (strategy-based vs skill-based). The goal of this prospective study was to evaluate the links between these three concepts, by testing the predictive roles of SC and ER skills on both ER adaptive and maladaptive strategies, using standardised questionnaires and visual analogue scales. Results of regression analysis showed that self-compassion positively predicts c

BACKGROUND: Functional Somatic Symptoms (FSS; i.e. symptoms without sufficient organic explanation) often begin in childhood and adolescence and are common to this developmental period. Emotion regulation and parental factors seem to play a relevant role in the development and maintenance of FSS. So far, little systematic research has been conducted in childhood and adolescence on the importance of specific emotion regulation strategies and their links with parental factors.
METHOD: In two studies, children and adolescents (Study 1/Study 2: N = 46/68; 65%/60% female, Age M = 10.0/13.1) and th
