Risk factors associated with St. Louis encephalitis seroprevalence in two populations from Córdoba, Argentina.

St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) is endemic in Argentina. The first outbreak was recorded in Córdoba during the late summer of 2005. This study analyzes the association between social and demographic factors and other variables related to exposure to mosquitoes with SLEV infection in 264 individuals who attended two health centers in the city of Córdoba during the period December 2004-January 2005. Multiple logistic regression models were used to estimate the risk coefficients. The seroprevalence was 12.9%, similar to that in previous reports. Risks of infection were associated with the pre

Genetic characterization of St. Louis encephalitis virus isolated from human in São Paulo, Brazil.

The molecular characterization of SPH253157, a new strain of St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV), isolated in 2004 from the first case of human infection recognized in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, is reported. The patient, presenting a febrile illness without neurological involvement, was hospitalized as a probable case of dengue fever. Genomic RNA was isolated from the supernatant of C6/36 cells infected with acute phase-serum specimen of the patient and the envelope gene was amplified by reverse-transcription-polymerase chain reaction. The complete nucleotide sequence of the envelope gene

Molecular typing of West Nile Virus, Dengue, and St. Louis encephalitis using multiplex sequencing.

We report the development of an assay to simultaneously identify three of the clinically important flaviviruses (West Nile Virus, Dengue, and St. Louis encephalitis). This assay is based on the nucleotide sequence variations within a 266-bp region of the non-structural protein 5. Further, based on the nucleotide variations in the same region of the non-structural protein 5, four of the present Dengue serotypes were identified. To identify some of the subtypes of WNV we have developed a second assay using multiplex sequencing technology. The format of the result of this assay is an electrophero

Experimental infection of California birds with western equine encephalomyelitis and St. Louis encephalitis viruses.

A total of 27 bird species from the San Joaquin and Coachella valleys of California were inoculated subcutaneously with sympatric strains of western equine encephalomyelitis (WEE) and St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) viruses. Overall, 133 of 164 birds inoculated with WEE virus developed a viremia detected by plaque assay; significantly greater than 72 of 163 birds inoculated with SLE virus. Host competence was calculated as the average number of days that each avian species had a viremia > or = 2 log10 plaque-forming units per 0.1 ml, the threshold for infecting susceptible Culex tarsalis Coquille

Immunisation with DNA polynucleotides protects mice against lethal challenge with St. Louis encephalitis virus.

In vivo transfection by intramuscular injection with plasmids expressing the immunogenic proteins of microbial pathogens has considerable potential as a vaccination strategy against many pathogens of both man and animals. Here we report that weanling mice given a single intramuscular injection of 50 micrograms of a plasmid, pSLE1 expressing the St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLE) prM/E protein under the control of the cytomegalovirus immediate early protein promoter produced SLE-specific antibody and were protected against lethal challenge with the virulent virus. Immunoglobulin M antibody capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for diagnosis of St. Louis encephalitis.

Sera from patients with St. Louis encephalitis were tested with an immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibody capture enzyme immunoassay (MAC ELISA). The assay used five reagents: antihuman IgM, test serum, sucrose-acetone-extracted mouse brain antigen, broadly cross-reactive flavivirus monoclonal antibody conjugated to alkaline phosphatase, and substrate (p-nitrophenyl phosphate). MAC ELISA endpoint titers correlated (r = 0.893) with the absorbance value of a 1:100 dilution of patient serum. Significant (fourfold or greater) changes in the endpoint titers between paired sera corresponded to a critical r

St Louis encephalitis in Ohio, September 1975: clinical and EEG studies in 16 cases.

In 1975, during the largest epidemic of St Louis encephalitis (SLE) in the United States, 416 cases were diagnosed in Ohio. Persons who were admitted to two Columbus (Ohio) hospitals with suspected acute viral CNS infection were prospectively studied to define the virologic and clinical aspects of SLE. Sixteen cases of SLE were diagnosed serologically. Fifteen patients had signs of encephalitis and one had aseptic meningitis. Six patients had the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion. Other frequent findings included moderate peripheral leukocytosis and CSF pleocytosis, with

EFFECT OF PREGNANCY UPON THE IMMUNITY OF MICE VACCINATED AGAINST ST. LOUIS ENCEPHALITIS VIRUS.

1. Virgin and pregnant Swiss mice are equally susceptible to intracerebral inoculation of St. Louis encephalitis virus. 2. Following subcutaneous vaccination with the St. Louis virus, the great majority of virgin Swiss mice become immune to subsequent intracerebral injection of 10,000 M.L.D. of the virus. 3. The majority of mice vaccinated during pregnancy do not become immune to even as little as 500 intracerebral M.L.D. of the virus. The depression of the ability to acquire immunity against the virus is most marked when the vaccination is carried out late in pregnancy, but it is also demonst

Demographic and spatial analysis of West Nile virus and St. Louis encephalitis in Houston, Texas.

This descriptive prevalence study describes the relationships between mosquito density and the presence of arboviruses (in mosquitoes and humans) with various socioeconomic and environmental factors present near the time of teh arbovirus outbreak in Harris County, Texas, in 2002. This study suggests that mosquito density increased if the trap was located in an area with a large number of containers that may inadvertently retain rainwater (P = 0.056). When considering only virus-positive mosquitoes, significant relationships were observed if the trap was located near waste materials (P < 0.001)

Simulation studies of St. Louis encephalitis and West Nile viruses: the impact of bird mortality.

West Nile virus (WNv) has spread through much of the eastern United States following its introduction in 1999, and arrived in Florida in 2001. Prior to its arrival, we anticipated that its transmission cycle was likely to be similar to that of St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEv). However, high levels of avian mortality have been reported for WNv in the northeastern United States, and it was unknown how this would impact the transmission dynamics of WNv. Simulation models were used to compare the two viruses by considering the impact of bird mortality on the transmission dynamics of arboviruses

Use of the polymerase chain reaction for the sensitive detection of St. Louis encephalitis viral RNA.

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays were developed for the detection of RNA from the St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus. Using computer-assisted analysis of the MSI-7 strain SLE virus genome, two primer pairs were selected from the capsid-coding and the membrane associated protein-coding genes, and one from the envelope-coding gene. Reverse transcription was primed with either specific oligomers or with random hexamers; these methods were compared for cDNA synthesis and subsequent PCR amplification with the oligomeric pairs. Random hexamers provided more sensitive detection of viral RNA. Ea

Preliminary studies of Aedes bahamensis as a host and potential vector of St. Louis encephalitis virus.

Aedes bahamensis, a recent introduction to the state of Florida, was studied to determine its capability to serve as a host or vector of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus. Females were readily infected by inoculation, and had whole body virus titers as high as 10(9.4) mosquito infectious doses 50. Sixty percent of females that had been infected by inoculation were capable of orally transmitting virus. Nearly half of the females feeding on viremic chickens became infected, but not all of these infections disseminated to the head. Vertical transmission of SLE virus to progeny of inoculated fema

Influence of sex and age on natural resistance to St. Louis encephalitis virus infection in mice.

A difference was observed in susceptibility of adult male and female mice to St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus as measured by the death rate after intravenous challenge. Female mice that had susceptibility similar to that of males at 2 months of age had increased resistance to SLE virus at 3 and 4 months of age. The increased resistance occurred after sexual maturity, indicating that the resistance factor possibly was related to an aging process in the female. The susceptibility of male mice remained unchanged over the 2- to 4-month period. Neither pregnancy nor castration had any effect on r

Persistence and amplification of St. Louis encephalitis virus in the Coachella Valley of California, 2000-2001.

The introduction of a St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLE) genotype new to southeastern California during 2000 was followed by focal enzootic amplification in the Coachella Valley that was detected by seroconversions of 29 sentinel chickens in five of nine flocks of 10 chickens each, isolations of virus from 30 of 538 pools of 50 Culex tarsalis Coquillett females, and collection of 30 positive sera from 2,205 wild birds. This SLE strain over wintered successfully and then amplified during the summer of 2001, with 47 sentinel seroconversions in eight of nine flocks, 70 virus isolations from 719 p

Epidemiologic aspects of a St. Louis encephalitis outbreak in Fort Walton Beach, Florida in 1980.

From July 10 through August 4, 1980, five cases of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) occurred in and near Fort Walton Beach on the Gulf Coast of northwest Florida. These were the first cases of SLE ever reported from the Florida panhandle. To determine the extent of SLE infection in the community, sera (n = 968) were collected from patients at the local hospital and county public health unit and tested for SLE virus antibody. The SLE attack rate was highest in a centrally located impoverished census tract. There was a trend toward decreasing seroprevalence with distance from the central area of the
