Salivary gland tumors are uncommon and most of them are of epithelial origin. Mesenchymal tumors affecting the parotid are extremely rare, and we present a series of 19 cases. All parotid tumors (600 cases) treated at the Department of Head and Neck Surgery from A.C. Camargo Hospital, Brazil from 1953 to 2003 were reviewed and 19 cases of nonlymphoid mesenchymal origin were selected. The histological characteristics were reviewed and clinical features were obtained from the medical charts. 15 out of 19 were benign tumors, including 5 lymphangiomas, 5 neurofibromas, and one case each of schwann

Only four cases of colorectal adenocarcinoma with a yolk sac tumor (YST) component have been reported in the English literature. No genetic investigation has been performed in these cases. We report a case of colorectal adenocarcinoma in which the recurrent tumor had a YST component. A 49-year-old woman presented with a pelvic tumor three years after endoscopic mucosal resection of sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma. The pelvic tumor consisted of an undifferentiated carcinoma component and a YST component. The serum alpha-fetoprotein level was elevated to 42 ng/mL. Treatment as conventional colorect

Germ cell differentiation has been described in association with somatic tumors arising from several organ systems; rare cases arising from urothelium have been reported. Here we present a 62-year-old male with a remote history of lung cancer, a left adrenal gland mass, and a 5.6 cm left bladder wall mass; cystoscopy demonstrated a large papillary mass on the left anterior bladder wall. A transurethral resection specimen was sent for review in consultation and showed extensive papillary structures with thin fibrovascular cores lined by neoplastic cells with clear cytoplasm. These neoplastic ce

We assessed the usefulness of fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) in the diagnosis of mediastinal germ cell tumors (GCTs). In the archives of 3 pathology departments, we found records of 7 patients with mediastinal GCTs who underwent mediastinal FNAB as part of the diagnostic workup. The FNAB smears, results of the immunocytochemical analysis, the corresponding histologic findings, and the clinical charts were reviewed. All patients were men (age range, 24-44 years; mean, 32 years). One patient had a history of testicular mixed GCT 10 years earlier. The 6 primary mediastinal GCTs consisted of

Solid ovarian tumors are uncommon in the pediatric population, but when they occur, they are a major source of anxiety for the patient and her family. The pediatric surgeon will be relied on to diagnose these tumors because they usually present as abdominal pain with a mass. The diagnostic evaluation consists of a carefully obtained history and physical examination, ultrasound examination, serum assay for tumor markers, and further radiographic evaluation as indicated. Two thirds of malignant tumors in children are germ cell tumors, and most of these are dysgerminomas or endodermal sinus tumor

CONTEXT.—: The interpretation of postchemotherapy resections of anterior mediastinal germ cell tumors plays a critical role in determining future patient management and prognosis. Treatment-related changes in the thymus may mimic residual teratoma or microcystic-pattern yolk sac tumor. There is limited extant information concerning therapy-related pseudoneoplastic thymic alterations.
OBJECTIVE.—: To provide diagnostic assistance to distinguish nonneoplastic thymic abnormalities secondary to chemotherapy from residual germ cell tumor.
DESIGN.—: We retrospectively reviewed 91 resections of pri

BACKGROUND Mediastinal masses can originate from anatomical structures normally located in the mediastinum, or from structures that travel through the mediastinum during embryogenesis. Initial presenting symptoms usually vary from shortness of breath, cough, chest pain, and superior vena cava syndrome to nonspecific constitutional symptoms (eg, fever, weight loss, fatigue). However, the initial presentation of a mediastinal mass with acute pericarditis has not been reported in the literature as far as we know. CASE REPORT A 20-year-old man presented to the Cardiology Clinic with chest pain and

Germ cell tumours (GCTs) commonly involve the ovaries, testes, and other midline structures in children and adolescents and comprised a variety of tumours that have a common histiogenetic origin. The yolk sac tumour (YST) variant is the most common one seen in over 80% of testicular GCTs in children. Other sites of occurrence of these tumours include the mediastinum, prostate, retroperitoneum, and sacrococcygeal region. Penile malignancies account for less than 10% of male malignancies in the elderly, while its occurrence in children is rare. We present the case of a 5-year-old child with YST

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: We report the extremely rare occurrence of a second germ-cell tumor at a different site and with different histological types long after total resolution of a pineal germinoma.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 21-year-old man who presented with headache and diplopia was admitted to our hospital. Neuroradiological studies revealed a tumor in the pineal region. The tumor was biopsied with endoscope, and third ventriculostomy was performed. Histologically, the tumor proved to be a germinoma. The patient received 3 cycles of combination chemotherapy consisting of carboplatin and

The differential diagnosis of the vulvar mass in the prepubertal patient is extensive and reported cases of a vulvar hamartoma in the literature are limited. The case presented in this work and review of the literature demonstrate that when considering the differential diagnosis of vulvar masses in the prepubertal female, hamartoma should be included. This review outlines the differential diagnosis of the vulvar mass and gives a comprehensive review of benign masses arising from embryonic remnants, those of mesenchymal origin as well as sarcoma botryoides-embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma and the emb

During the last 8 years, 70 cases of testicular tumor were treated in our department. Of them 2 cases had brain metastasis. Case 1; A 37-year-old male was admitted with the chief complaint of cough. Retroperitoneal lymph node and lung metastases were discovered (stage IIIB, pT4aN1M1). Resected right testis was diagnosed as embryonal carcinoma, teratoma and STGC histopathologically. After 3 courses of PVB (cisplatinum, vincristine, bleomycin) chemotherapy right hemiplegia occurred and computerized tomographic (CT) scan revealed brain metastasis. His general condition degraded rapidly and he die

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to report two cases of paediatric Yolk sac tumours (YST) of the orbit and sinonasal tract, with a major review on the subject.
METHODS: Two case reports along with a comprehensive retrospective literature review of all English language publications between 1974 and 2021 is presented. Literature review examined the demographics, clinical presentation and diagnostic and prognostic factors of extragonadal YSTs of the orbit and sinonasal tract.
RESULTS: Orbit and sinuses are rare sites for YST, with only 25 paediatric cases reported in the literature. Extragonad

BACKGROUND: Malignant mediastinal germ cell tumors are a rare disease and represent only 1% to 4% of all mediastinal tumors. Gonadal germ cell tumors are generally the most common type and constitute 90% of germ cell tumors. The mediastinum is the second most frequently affected area ahead of other extragonadal areas, which include the retroperitoneum, the sacrococcygeal area, and the central nervous system. We report on the case of a mediastinal yolk sac tumor with a complete histological response to chemotherapy.

A 2-month-old male Holstein calf showed clinical signs of abdominal bloating, melena, and pain and was suspected of having a perforating abomasal ulcer. Necropsy revealed a large mass located preferentially around the abomasum and a large perforating abomasal ulcer on the pyloric antrum. Milky white masses of various sizes were also found in the abdominal cavity that consisted of agglutinated nodules ranging in size from a pinhead to a golf ball and were distributed on the surfaces of the liver, reticulum, omasum, abomasum, and diaphragm. Microscopic examination revealed that the masses were c

Yolk sac tumor (YST) occurs rarely in older women, either in association with a variety of ovarian epithelial tumors or, considerably less often, without an identifiable epithelial precursor. The patients often have elevated serum levels of α-fetoprotein that roughly correlate with the amount of the YST component. In postmenopausal women with an ovarian mass and elevated serum levels of α-fetoprotein, a tumor of this type should be suspected. Endometrioid carcinoma is the most common putative precursor, and the tumor is often associated with an endometriotic cyst; however, malignant Müllerian

A case of Schinzel-Giedion syndrome, a rare malformation syndrome, is described. In addition to the classic features of the syndrome, the patient had a malignant sacrococcygeal teratoma and agenesis of the corpus callosum. So far, this patient is the fifth case with a sacrococcygeal tumor and the eighth with anomalies of the corpus callosum. According to this occurrence of uncommon tumors, risk of malignancy could be a component of Schinzel-Giedion syndrome.

The authors report the successful treatment of two cases of malignant germ-cell tumor. A 12-year-old patient with a pineal immature teratoma and increase of alpha-fetoprotein serum levels was treated with total excision and cisplatin, vinblastine, and bleomycin (PVB) in combination given twice. One year later, he had a recurrence of tumor in the right occipital lobe, which was totally removed, and yolk sac tumor was verified. As subsequent adjuvant chemotherapy, PVB was given in four courses over 1.5 years, together with one course of cisplatin-etoposide (PE) therapy. The patient is well 5 yea

We retrospectively reviewed the genetic abnormalities detected clinically in 455 men with advanced germ cell tumors referred for chemotherapy. Of the patients 49 had extragonadal and 406 had testicular germ cell tumors. Of 19 patients with mediastinal germ cell tumors 4 (21 per cent, 3 with teratocarcinoma and 1 with endodermal sinus tumor) had Klinefelter's syndrome. Three of these patients had a 47XXY and 1 had a 48XXYY karyotype. No Klinefelter's syndrome was observed among 30 consecutive patients with retroperitoneal germ cell tumors or among the 406 with testicular tumors. Karyotypes of 3

Adenomatoid tumor of the male genitourinary tract is a rare benign neoplasm thought to be of mesothelial origin. In exceptional cases, these lesions may involve the testicular parenchyma, of which there are only 9 published cases in the literature. The authors describe a rare case of a testicular tumor in a 41-year-old male with normal tumor markers. Histopathology and immunohistochemical studies revealed an adenomatoid tumor with intratesticular growth. No involvement of the epididymis or testicular membranes was identified. The morphological clues leading to the correct diagnosis of adenomat

Tumor markers in gynecologic malignancies can be classified generally as oncofetal proteins, carcino-placental proteins, and more specific tumor-associated antigens. Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is most effective as a tumor marker in mucinous adenocarcinomas of the endocervix and ovary and in keratinizing squamous cell carcinomas of the cervix. In contrast, the use of alphafetoprotein (AFP) in gynecologic cancer is limited to patients with germ cell tumors of the ovary and specifically endodermal sinus tumors. The beta subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin (beta-hCG) remains an exemplary t
