Heteroepitaxial Strain Engineering and Interfacial Energy Transfer Boosting Optoelectronic Properties in C60/WS2 van der Waals Heterostructures.

Engineered van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures, combining molecular semiconductors and atomically flat nanomaterials, offer vast opportunities to tailor optoelectronic properties at heterointerfaces. Here, the heteroepitaxial assembly of C60 molecules on monolayer tungsten disulfide (ML-WS2), where an anisotropic compression strain within the C60 lattice at the heterointerface induces the formation of 1D polymeric C60 strings and activates otherwise symmetry-forbidden S1 → S0 optical transitions, is reported. This, coupled with interfacial energy transfer from ML-WS2 to C60, results in a rema

Breaking the "Seesaw Effect": 20.72% Efficiency Organic Solar Cells via Cascade Energy Transfer with a Fluorescent Sensitizer.

Though organic solar cells (OSCs) have achieved remarkable progress recently, the intrinsic limitation of the "seesaw effect" between open-circuit voltage (Voc) and short-circuit current density (Jsc) hinders their further improvements. In this study, a fluorescent small molecule, namely SD-EDOT, is incorporated into the widely used PM6:BTP-eC9 system to overcome this challenge. The addition of SD-EDOT lowers the energetic disorder and electron-phonon coupling within the system. More importantly, it forms an energy cascade between donor and acceptor, enabling a side cascade energy transfer pat

Solvent-Free Artificial Light-Harvesting System in a Fluid Donor with Highly Efficient Förster Resonance Energy Transfer.

Multi-step Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) plays a vital role in photosynthesis. While the energy transfer efficiency (ΦET) of a naturally occurring system can reach 95%, that of most artificial light-harvesting systems (ALHSs) is still limited. Herein, we propose a strategy to construct highly efficient ALHSs using a blue-emitting, supercooled ionic compound of naphthalimide (NPI) as the donor, a green-emitting BODIPY derivate as a relay acceptor, and a commercially available, red-emitting dye [rhodamine B (RhB)] as the final acceptor. The broad emission of the fluid donor can overla

Optimizing linear energy transfer distribution in intensity-modulated proton therapy using the alternating direction method of multipliers.

PURPOSE: This study develop a novel linear energy transfer (LET) optimization method for intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) with minimum monitor unit (MMU) constraint using the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The novel LET optimization method (ADMM-LET) was proposed with (1) the dose objective and the LET objective as the optimization objective and (2) the non-convex MMU threshold as a constraint condition. ADMM was used to solve the optimization problem. In the ADMM-LET framework, the optimization process entails iteratively solving the dose s

Imidazophenothiazine-Based Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Materials with Ultra-Long-Lived Excited States for Energy Transfer Photocatalysis.

Triplet-triplet energy transfer (EnT) is a powerful activation pathway in photocatalysis that unlocks new organic transformations and improves the sustainability of organic synthesis. Many current examples, however, still rely on platinum-group metal complexes as photosensitizers, with associated high costs and environmental impacts. Photosensitizers that exhibit thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) are attractive fully organic alternatives in EnT photocatalysis. However, TADF photocatalysts incorporating heavy atoms remain rare, despite their utility in inducing efficient spin-orbi

Two-photon-induced Förster resonance energy transfer in a hybrid material engineered from quantum dots and bacteriorhodopsin.

Energy transfer from nanostructures to biological supramolecular photosystems is an important fundamental issue related to the possible influence of nanoobjects on biological functions. We demonstrate here two-photon-induced Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) from fluorescent CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) to the photosensitive protein bacteriorhodopsin (bR) in a QD-bR hybrid material. The two-photon absorption cross section of QDs has been found to be about two orders of magnitude larger than that of bR. Therefore, highly selective two-photon excitation of QDs in QD-bR complexes is possibl

Resonant nonradiative energy transfer in CdSe/ZnS core/shell nanocrystal solids enhances hybrid white light emitting diodes.

We propose and demonstrate hybrid white light emitting diodes enhanced with resonant nonradiative energy transfer in CdSe/ZnS core/shell nanocrystal solids integrated on near-UV InGaN/GaN LEDs. We observe a relative quantum efficiency enhancement of 13.2 percent for the acceptor nanocrystals in the energy gradient mixed assembly, compared to the monodisperse phase. This enhancement is attributed to the ability to recycle trapped excitons into nanocrystals using nonradiative energy transfer. We present the time-resolved photoluminescence of these nanocrystal solids to reveal the kinetics of the

Measurement of changes in fluorescence resonance energy transfer between gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptors in response to agonists.

Oligomerization of membrane-bound G-protein-coupled receptors has recently emerged as an important step in cellular signaling. Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) has undergone a revival as the method of choice for demonstrating in vivo protein-protein interactions and receptor dimerization. We have used chimeras of gonadotropin-releasing harmone (GnRH) receptors and various fluorescent proteins to investigate receptor dimerization in relation to receptor activation. Two pairs of FRET-compatible fluorescent proteins were used: sapphire with topaz, and enhanced green fluorescent prote

Prenatal diagnosis of congenital toxoplasmosis by duplex real-time PCR using fluorescence resonance energy transfer hybridization probes.

The diagnosis of congenital toxoplasmosis frequently relies on PCR tests of amniotic fluid (AF). A duplex real-time quantitative PCR test based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer was developed to quantify the parasite load and to decrease the risk of contamination. An internal control based on the detection of 10 pg mouse DNA added to the AF was included to check for PCR efficiency. The relationship between the parasite load and the occurrence of ultrasonographic abnormalities in 87 samples of AF was analyzed. Seven AF (8%) had a parasitic load > 10(3); 14 (16%) had > 10(2)-< or =10(3);

Förster Resonance Energy Transfer-Based Selective Detection of Influenza Viruses Using N-Doped Sialic Acid Carbon Dots.

We report the rational design and synthesis of nitrogen-doped sialic acid-derived carbon dots (SiaMPDA CDs) with excitation-independent green emission and high quantum yield and demonstrate their application as efficient Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) donors for the selective detection of influenza A virus (IAV) subtypes. The surface functionalization of the CDs with sialic acid moieties enables specific molecular recognition of the viral hemagglutinin (HA) protein via multivalent hydrogen-bonding interactions. In combination with Rhodamine B (RhB) as an acceptor, the SiaMPDA-RhB pai

Triplet state stabilization and synergistic energy transfer in BOPHY-functionalized NU-1000 for enhanced photocatalytic aerobic oxidation.

Herein, we report the post-synthetic incorporation of an iodinated boron-difluoroboron hydrazone photosensitizer (I-BOPHYPhCOOH) into a zirconium-based metal-organic framework (NU-1000) via solvent-assisted ligand incorporation (SALI). In methanol, the spatial confinement within the hierarchical pores of NU-1000 significantly prolongs the triplet state lifetime of the anchored I-BOPHY to 3.81 microseconds, effectively reducing solvent-induced non-radiative decay pathways observed in protic bulk solution. This stabilization of long-lived triplet states, combined with efficient resonance energy

Excitation energy transfer between monomeric bacterioclorophylls in reaction centers of P-less mutant of purple photosynthetic bacteria.

Photosynthetic reaction centers (RCs) are unique natural converters of light energy into chemical energy. Studying the excitation dynamics of these RCs helps better understand the physical mechanisms underlying their organization and function, which may be useful in the creating of their artificial analogs. Using femtosecond differential absorption spectroscopy, we studied the early-time dynamics of excited states of bacteriochlorophyll BA and BB monomers in mutant RCs from purple bacteria Rhodobacter (Rb.) sphaeroides, which lack the bacteriochlorophyll P dimer due to the replacement of valin

Multi-task interactive feature transfer network for dual-energy-like chest radiography image synthesis using CT data.

Accurate synthesis of bone and bone-suppression (B-S) images from chest radiographs is crucial for enhancing diagnostic precision in detecting lung abnormalities. Most deep learning methods, which typically generate only one type of image, limit diagnostic scope. This study introduces a novel multi-task interactive feature transfer network (MIFT-Net), which synthesizes dual-energy-like chest images simultaneously using computed tomography (CT) data. MIFT-Net employs a phased feature extraction and separation strategy to progressively generate clear bone and B-S images. By fusing features from

Spectroscopic signatures of interfacial energy transfer in MoS2-based van der Waals heterostructures under deep-UV excitation.

We report a comprehensive photoluminescence (PL) and photoluminescence excitation (PLE) study of monolayer MoS2 and its van der Waals heterostructures with hBN and graphene under deep-ultraviolet (DUV) excitation. Using synchrotron-based VUV/UV spectroscopy, we reveal that while pristine MoS2 exhibits only A-exciton emission at ∼660 nm under visible excitation, broadband near-infrared emission (750-900 nm) emerges at cryogenic temperatures under DUV excitation in MoS2/hBN and MoS2/graphene heterostructures. This emission indicates a nonlocal excitation-emission mechanism facilitated by interfa

A multi-source feature-driven deep learning method to generate linear energy transfer distribution for proton therapy.

BACKGROUND: Monte Carlo (MC)-based estimation of dose-averaged linear energy transfer (LETd) in proton therapy is accurate but computationally intensive. Although deep learning (DL) models offer efficient alternatives, few have been optimized for multi-source inputs or validated on anatomically complex tumors, such as nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). PURPOSE: This study developed and evaluated a multi-source DL framework for voxel-level LETd prediction in proton therapy for NPC, aiming to identify optimal input configurations and assess both prediction accuracy and clinical reliability. Bimetallic-Doped Metal-Organic Gel for Efficient Electrochemiluminescence: Staircase-Mediated Energy Transfer and Applications in Epinephrine Detection.

This study presents the development of a novel bimetallic-doped metal-organic gel (Tb-Eu-MOG) synthesized by codoping terbium (Tb(III)) and europium (Eu(III)) with the Hcptpy ligand and explores its application in electrochemiluminescence (ECL) for sensitive detection of epinephrine (EP). The Tb-Eu-MOG exhibits unique petal nanoflower-like morphology and remarkable ECL signals, attributed to the dual sensitization effects of Tb(III) and Eu(III) on the Hcptpy ligand. The Tb(III) doping facilitates energy transfer and enhances ECL efficiency through a staircase effect. The Tb-Eu-MOG/K2S2O8 syste

Interfacial Energy Transfer Strategy for Green Circularly Polarized Electroluminescence Based on Chiral Polyfluorene Co-assembly Host Materials.

Chiral polyfluorene or chiral polyfluorene-based coassembly materials, featuring high carrier mobility and nanofiber structures, are promising for circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs). However, their relatively low triplet energy level severely limits their utility as chiral hosts due to easily inducing energy back-transfer from the guest emitters to the host. Herein, we present an effective strategy to suppress energy back-transfer from the achiral green emitter to the chiral polyfluorene coassembly host (R/S-PF8) by employing interfacial energy transfer from a cross-

Thermally Enhanced and Long Lifetime Red TADF Carbon Dots via Multi-Confinement and Phosphorescence Assisted Energy Transfer.

Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials, which can harvest both singlet and triplet excitons for high-efficiency emission, have attracted widespread concern for their enormous applications. Nevertheless, luminescence thermal quenching severely limits the efficiency and operating stability in TADF materials and devices at high temperature. Herein, a surface engineering strategy is adopted to obtain unique carbon dots (CDs)-based thermally enhanced TADF materials with ≈250% enhancement from 273 to 343 K via incorporating seed CDs into ionic crystal network.
