Ectopic Enterobius Vermicularis Infestation; An Extremely Rare Cause Of Mesenteric Lymphadenopathy Mimicking Tuberculous Lymphadenitis.

Enterobius vermicularis (EV) is a pinworm which commonly resides in the lumen of the intestinal tract and lays eggs on the perianal skin. However, rarely the worm can infest various other sites in the body and cases with infestation of such ectopic sites have been reported in literature. Rare cases of mesenteric lymph node involvement have also been reported. We report a case in a young male who presented with signs and symptoms of acute appendicitis. During surgery, enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes were identified. Histological examination revealed adult worm in the appendiceal lumen. Histolog

Enterobius vermicularis infection and its risk factors among pre-school children in Taipei, Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of pinworm infection is extremely low in Taipei, Taiwan. This population study was designed to determine the current status and the associated risk factors of this infection among pre-school children. METHODS: Perianal swab specimens were obtained from the parents or guardians using a two-consecutive-day adhesive cellophane perianal swab kit. Information of family background, personal hygiene, and household sanitary conditions were collected by asking the parents or guardians to complete a questionnaire. RESULTS: Of 44,163 children, 0.21% was found to infect with p

Transmission of Enterobius vermicularis eggs through hands of school children in rural South Africa.

Enterobius vermicularis is a helminth that is difficult to control, is found globally, especially in crowded conditions, and can be transmitted from person to person by contaminated hands. A newly developed method for the quantification of helminth eggs on hands was tested among schoolchildren in a rural South African region to look at the role hands play in helminth infection, and to determine the risk factors for hand contamination. The study found 16.6% of participants' hands positive for helminth eggs, with E. vermicularis most commonly identified. Egg concentrations on hands ranged from 0

SL1 RNA gene recovery from Enterobius vermicularis ancient DNA in pre-Columbian human coprolites.

Enterobius vermicularis, pinworm, is one of the most common helminths worldwide, infecting nearly a billion people at all socio-economic levels. In prehistoric populations the paleoparasitological findings show a pinworm homogeneous distribution among hunter-gatherers in North America, intensified with the advent of agriculture. This same increase also occurred in the transition from nomad hunter-gatherers to sedentary farmers in South America, although E. vermicularis infection encompasses only the ancient Andean peoples, with no record among the pre-Colombian populations in the South America

Comparison of egg positive rates of Enterobius vermicularis among preschool children in three Korean localities.

This survey was performed to investigate and compare egg positive rates (EPRs) of Enterobius vermicularis among preschool children in 3 Korean localities (Chuncheon-si, Inje-gun, and Paju-si) in 2008. A total of 7,048 preschool children were examined. Overall, the total EPR was 4.0%; the EPR was the highest in Chuncheon-si (5.6%), followed by Inje-gun (4.5%) and Paju-si (3.4%). The EPR of boys (4.9%) was higher than that of girls (3.1%). The EPR significantly increased with age, with the highest observed in 5~7-year-olds. These findings demonstrate that E. vermicularis infection is widely prev

Fine needle aspiration diagnosis of a subcutaneous abscess from Enterobius vermicularis infestation. A case report.

BACKGROUND: Extraintestinal infestation by Enterobius vermicularis is uncommon. It has been reported to occur in the peritoneal cavity, ovary, fallopian tube, endometrium, lung, liver and urinary tract. CASE REPORT: Fine needle aspiration diagnosis was made in a case of enterobiasis presenting with a subcutaneous abscess in the natal cleft. Eggs, as well as fragments of cuticle of the adult worm, were found; the morphology of both was best visualized in Papanicolaou-stained smears. Polarizing microscopy highlighted the equally spaced parallel grooves of the cuticle. CONCLUSION: Fine needle a

[Urethritis due to coinfection with Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Enterobius vermicularis in a 27-year-old man].

Urethritis is mainly caused by sexually transmitted pathogens, such as Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) [1]. Close to 90 million adults are infected annually with NG [2]. Treatment shall be performed according to national guidelines and resistance profiles [2, 3]. Enterobius vermicularis (EV) is the most common helminth in humans with 1 billion people globally infected [4-6]. Symptoms include anal pruritus; however, many infections are asymptomatic [4-7]. A case of urethritis due to simultaneous infection with NG and EV is reported.
