Typing of Enterococcus species by DNA restriction fragment analysis.

Enterococci are a frequent cause of hospital-acquired infection, being associated with urinary tract infections, wound sepsis, bacteremia, and endocarditis. The source of infection is usually thought to be endogenous, but some evidence points to cross-infection between patients. A better understanding of the epidemiology of enterococci has been limited by the lack of a good discriminatory typing system. This report describes the application of two DNA-based typing methods to Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium: comparison of restriction fragments from total DNA by conventional elect

Endogenous endophthalmitis by Enterococcus casseliflavus in an apparently healthy individual.

Endogenous endophthalmitis (EE) is usually encountered in immunocompromised individuals due to various causes and usually follows a systemic septic focus. Here, we describe Enterococcus casseliflavus-induced EE in an otherwise healthy individual in his early 30s, who had no prior history of trauma, hospitalisation or immune deficiency. The patient presented with acute, unilateral, painful visual loss associated with redness. Despite undergoing vitrectomy and receiving intravitreal injections of vancomycin and ceftazidime, the patient showed limited clinical improvement. Oral linezolid and intr

The Use of Intraperitoneal Ampicillin in a Patient With Enterococcus faecalis Peritonitis.

Introduction: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) - associated peritonitis is a serious complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD). The 2022 International Society of Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD) guidelines do not recommend intraperitoneal (IP) ampicillin for treatment of Enterococcal PD - associated peritonitis. To date, there is no in vivo data to support use of IP ampicillin for the treatment of Enterococcus faecalis. Case Description: A 69-year-old man with a past medical history of end stage kidney disease (ESKD) requiring continuous cycling peritoneal dialysis (CCPD) was admitted to the hospital and tre

Bactibilia due to enterococcus species in a case of periampullary carcinoma.

Biliary obstruction due to pancreaticobiliary malignancy is often accompanied by bactibilia and cholangitis; which are associated with postoperative septic complications and may adversely affect the clinical course. The enterococcus species is most responsible for postoperative complications in patients with malignant biliary obstruction. Here a case of bactibilia in a 60-year-old male patient, admitted with peri-ampullary carcinoma is reported. The bile sent for Gram-stain showed the presence of pus cells and Gram-positive cocci in pairs and the bacteriological culture revealed the growth of

Bacteremia in a pediatric hemodialysis unit secondary to Enterococcus fecalis.

UNLABELLED: Bacteremia is often a serious and recurring problem in children with hemodialysis catheters. We report an outbreak of Enterococcus bacteremia in a pediatric hemodialysis unit occurring from June 1992 to June 1993. During this period, 18 episodes of bacteremia occurred in eight children; 11 infections were polymicrobial. Enterococcus fecalis was associated with 13 infections in five patients (8 polymicrobial). Other pathogens included Enterobacter cloacae (5 infections), Staphylococcus (3), Staphylococcus epidermidis (2), and Klebsiella pneumoniae (2). All Enterococcus infections oc

Impact of Enterococcus infection in HSCT recipients: a national analysis.

BACKGROUND: Enterococci are the third most common cause of healthcare-associated infections in the United States, affecting 10-12% of all transplant recipients worldwide. Enterococcal bacteremia complicates the post-transplant recovery and raises mortality to 18%. This study aims to identify factors linked to mortality in hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients with Enterococcus infection. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis using the National Inpatient Sample Database (2018-2021). Adults treated with HSCT and admitted for Enterococcus infection were identified using I

A novel endolysin from an Enterococcus faecalis phage and application.

Enterococcus faecalis is the primary species detected in cases of secondary persistent infection resulting from root canal therapy failure. Due to the overuse of antibacterial agents, E. faecalis has developed resistance to these drugs, making it challenging to treat clinical diseases caused by E. faecalis infection. Therefore, there is an urgent need to explore new alternative drugs for treating E. faecalis infections. We aimed to clone and express the genes of phage endolysins, purify the recombinant proteins, and analyze their antibacterial activity, lysis profile, and ability to remove bio

Enterococcus casseliflavus Infection: A Review of Clinical Features and Treatment.

Some Enterococcus species, including Enterococcus faecalis and E. faecium, are increasingly becoming a common cause of nosocomial infections, accounting for the majority of human enterococcal infections, while other species, such as E. casseliflavus, have also been shown to be pathogenic to humans due to the increase in immunocompromised patients. These infections vary widely in their mode of transmission, symptoms, and other characteristics. Treatment is difficult in some cases because enterococci are resistant to numerous antimicrobial agents. Enterococcus faecalis and E. faecium are the bes

A Rare Case of Raoultella planticola and Enterococcus casseliflavus Coinfection.

Raoultella planticola, a Gram-negative bacterium, is a nonmotile rod usually found in soil and aquatic environments. It can be found in association with gastrointestinal malignancy. Enterococcus casseliflavus is a rare vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus that is responsible for some bacteremia. Our case describes a unique presentation of colonization with both R. planticola and E. casseliflavus isolated from the biliary stent isolates of a patient with known pancreatic malignancy and concomitant E. casseliflavus bacteremia. This is the first case ever reported of infection with both species.

The effects of ultraviolet disinfection on vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis.

The emergence of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) in water is threatening the health of human beings. The effect of ultraviolet disinfection on vancomycin-resistant E. faecalis, including the effectiveness, photoreactivation and dark repair of E. faecalis, and the deactivation mechanism were investigated in this work. Ultraviolet disinfection could quickly inactivate the target antibiotic resistant bacterium (ARB), E. faecalis, and it caused damage to the cell membrane and induced the decrease of the total adenosine triphosphate (ATP) content and the superoxide dismutas

Enterococcus casseliflavus Bacteraemia in a Patient with Chronic Renal Disease.

Enterococcus casseliflavus is a rare pathogen that usually causes urinary tract and abdominal infections. Its main characteristics are positive motility, yellow colonies and constitutive low-level resistance to vancomycin. We present a case of E. casseliflavus bacteraemia due to thrombophlebitis at the site of the central venous catheter used for hemodialysis in a renal patient. The biochemical identification of the microorganism was further corroborated by molecular detection of the vanC gene. The patient received antibiotic therapy initially with daptomycin and gentamicin, and then with ampi

PrgU: a suppressor of sex pheromone toxicity in Enterococcus faecalis.

Upon sensing of the peptide pheromone cCF10, Enterococcus faecalis cells carrying pCF10 produce three surface adhesins (PrgA, PrgB or Aggregation Substance, PrgC) and the Prg/Pcf type IV secretion system and, in turn, conjugatively transfer the plasmid at high frequencies to recipient cells. Here, we report that cCF10 induction is highly toxic to cells sustaining a deletion of prgU, a small orf located immediately downstream of prgB on pCF10. Upon pheromone exposure, these cells overproduce the Prg adhesins and display impaired envelope integrity, as evidenced by antibiotic susceptibility, mis

Enterococcus spp. in a single blood culture: bacteremia or contamination?

We retrospectively evaluated adult cases with Enterococcus spp. in 1 blood culture (BC) (1/1/2010-12/31/2015; n=294) and stratified them into bacteremia or contamination. Contamination frequency was similar in community versus hospital-onset, E. faecalis versus E. faecium, and number of BC drawn per day. Contamination predictors were vancomycin-resistance, ampicillin-resistance, commensal organism copresence, and nonurinary/abdominal sources.

Genomic analysis of reduced susceptibility to tigecycline in Enterococcus faecium.

Tigecycline (TIG) is approved for use for the treatment of complicated intra-abdominal infections, skin and skin structure infections, as well as pneumonia. Acquired resistance or reduced susceptibility to TIG has been observed in Gram-negative rods, has seldom been reported in Gram-positive organisms, and has not yet been reported in Enterococcus faecium. Using the serial passage method, in vitro mutant AusTig and in vitro mutants HMtig1 and HMtig2 with decreased TIG susceptibility (MICs, 0.25 μg/ml) were obtained from strains E. faecium Aus0004 and HM1070 (MICs, 0.03 μg/ml), respectively. Adolescents, IUDs, PID, and Enterococcus: a report of two cases.

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine devices are being used more frequently in adolescents requiring long-term reversible contraception. This population of sexually active adolescents is also at risk for pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). CASES: We report two cases of PID in adolescents with IUDs in place, both of whom had symptom resolution with removal of their IUDs, and in whom both IUDs were culture positive for Enterococcus. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION: Whether these results indicate vaginal contamination or a causative agent for PID is unclear, but one should consider alternative causes of PID in adole

[Antibiotics susceptibility of Streptococcus and Enterococcus: data of Onerba network].

This work was aimed to analyze trends in susceptibility to antibiotics among the main species of beta-hemolytic streptococci involved in community-acquired infections in human (Streptococcus pyogenes and Streptococcus agalactiae), or in animals (Streptococcus suis and Streptococcus uberis) and also among the main enterocci species, Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium. Data were recorded since 1996 through the Onerba networks. S. pyogenes, as the other beta-hemolytic streptococci studied remained fully susceptible to beta-lactam antibiotics. However, susceptibility to macrolides is c
