Ambient hydrogenation of solid aromatics enabled by a high entropy alloy nanocatalyst.

Hydrogenation is a versatile chemical process with significant applications in various industries, including food production, petrochemical refining, pharmaceuticals, and hydrogen carriers/safety. Traditional hydrogenation of aromatics, hindered by the stable π-conjugated phenyl ring structures, typically requires high temperatures and pressures, making ambient hydrogenation a grand challenge. Herein, we introduce a PdPtRuCuNi high entropy alloy (HEA) nanocatalyst, achieving an exceptional 100% hydrogenation of carbon-carbon unsaturated bonds, including alkynyl and phenyl groups, in solid 1,4-

An Active and Regenerable Nanometric High-Entropy Catalyst for Efficient Propane Dehydrogenation.

Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) is crucial for propylene production, but commercially employed Pt-based catalysts face susceptibility to deactivation due to the Pt sintering during reaction and regeneration steps. Here, we report a SiO2 supported nanometric (MnCoCuZnPt) high-entropy PDH catalyst with high activity and stability. The catalyst exhibited a super high propane conversion of 56.6 % with 94 % selectivity of propylene at 600 °C. The propylene productivity reached 68.5 molC3H6 ⋅ gPt -1 ⋅ h-1, nearly three times that of Pt/SiO2 (23.5 molC3H6 ⋅ gPt -1 ⋅ h-1) under a weight hourly space vel

Multiscale Diffusion Entropy Analysis for the Detection of Crucial Events in Cardiac Pathology.

The significance of crucial events in explaining the dynamics of a physiological system has only been recently emerging. Crucial events are yet to be fully understood and implemented in clinical applications of physiological signal processing. This paper proposes the application of modified diffusion entropy (MDEA) and novel multiscale diffusion entropy analyses (MSDEA) on measuring the temporal complexity of the ECG time series to improve crucial events detection performance. Thirty samples of each of three groups of ECG datasets from PhysioNet with recordings of cardiac arrhythmia (ARR), con

Feasibility of visualizing higher regions of Shannon entropy in atrial fibrillation patients.

Catheter ablation is associated with limited success rates in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation (AF), which is mostly maintained by rotors that are located outside of pulmonary veins (PV) region. None of the currently available commercial mapping systems can accurately predict the rotor location outside of PV in patients with persistent AF. Experimental verification of the feasibility of using Shannon entropy (SE) based mapping technique based on symbolic dynamics approach to identify pivotal points of rotors in isolated rabbit hearts was performed. This mapping approach was applied

Intracranial pressure for the characterization of different types of hydrocephalus: A Permutation Entropy study.

Hydrocephalus is a condition characterized by altered cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics and chronic rises in intracranial pressure (ICP). However, the reason why hydrocephalic physiologies fail to inhibit dangerously high ICP levels is not known. Infusion studies are used to raise ICP and evaluate CSF circulation disorders. In this pilot study, ICP signals recorded during infusion tests from 33 patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus and 36 patients having developed a secondary form of normal pressure hydrocephalus were characterized using Permutation Entropy (PE), a symbolic non-linear m

Multiscale entropy analysis of electroencephalography during sleep in patients with Parkinson disease.

Sleep disorders are frequently seen in patients with Parkinson disease (PD), including rapid eye movement (REM) behavior disorder and periodic limb movement disorder. However, knowledge about changes in non-REM sleep in patients with PD is limited. This study explored the characteristics of electroencephalography (EEG) during sleep in patients with PD and non-PD controls. We further conducted multiscale entropy (MSE) analysis to evaluate and compare the complexity of sleep EEG for the 2 groups. There were 9 patients with PD (Hoehn-Yahr stage 1 or 2) and 11 non-PD controls. All participants und

Altered neural and behavioral dynamics in Huntington's disease: an entropy conservation approach.

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) is an inherited condition that results in neurodegeneration of the striatum, the forebrain structure that processes cortical information for behavioral output. In the R6/2 transgenic mouse model of HD, striatal neurons exhibit aberrant firing patterns that are coupled with reduced flexibility in the motor system. The aim of this study was to test the patterns of unpredictability in brain and behavior in wild-type (WT) and R6/2 mice. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Striatal local field potentials (LFP) were recorded from 18 WT and 17 R6/2 mice (aged 8-11 w

Enthalpy-Entropy Synergy Governs Cation-Mediated Interfacial Water Activation on Cu(111).

The reactivity of interfacial water at metal electrodes plays a decisive role in governing proton-coupled electrocatalytic kinetics, yet a quantitative understanding of how electrolyte cations modulate this reactivity remains elusive. Herein, metadynamics-biased ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations reveal that the regulation of water activity on the Cu(111) surface by potassium ion (K+) is intrinsically governed by enthalpy-entropy synergy. Thermodynamic decomposition reveals that the interfacial electric field dominates the enthalpic contribution, whereas hydrogen-bonded network di

Competing mechanisms toughen bcc binary and medium-entropy alloys at 20 K.

Plastic deformation in body-centred cubic (bcc) metals and alloys is conventionally mediated by screw dislocations. Their temperature-sensitive motion is attributed to a steep rise in strength with decreasing temperature that constricts plastic zones at crack tips, leading to a ductile-to-brittle transition1. Here we evaluated the mechanical properties of group IV-V bcc refractory alloys with similar electronic structures at 20 K and found that these materials instead exhibit a plateau in tensile yield strength and fracture toughness as a function of temperature, with no apparent ductile-to-br

High-Entropy Perovskites for Solid Oxide Cells: Mechanistic Insights to Practical Applications.

Solid oxide cells (SOCs) are high-temperature electrochemical platforms for efficient energy conversion and chemical production in both fuel-cell and electrolysis modes. Practical deployment remains constrained by fuel-electrode coking, limited transport, and sluggish kinetics at reduced temperatures, electrolyte instability, surface segregation, interfacial degradation, and chromium poisoning at the oxygen electrode. High-entropy perovskite oxides (HEPOs) offer an emerging route to address these coupled constraints, as multication design can reshape defect chemistry, transport, and thermochem

Dynamics and entropy of dynamical systems arising from two-dimensional random substitutions.

A symbolic random substitution assigns to each letter a finite set of possible images with a probability distribution producing complex dynamical systems with positive entropy, mixed spectral types and nuanced mixing properties. In this study, we consider a two-dimensional random substitution where each letter is mapped to a finite set of a nonempty array of letters called rectangular words, such that any letter can be iterated infinitely many times via canonical concatenation to produce larger and larger rectangular words. We show that such systems are topologically transitive, have either em

BOLD complexity characterizes glioblastoma survival via voxel-wise and localized sample entropy.

PURPOSE: Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most prevalent and lethal primary brain tumor. Non-invasive presurgical biomarkers are urgently needed to predict patients’ overall survival (OS). Here we demonstrated a nuanced prognostic tool using sample entropy to assess Blood-Oxygen-Level-Dependent (BOLD) complexity and predict survival outcome, which is computationally efficient, reproducible, robust to noise, and readily transferable across cohorts. METHODS: Resting-state fMRI from 205 treatment-naïve GBM patients and 1148 cognitively stable healthy controls were evaluated. Sample entropy (SampEn), a c

Bifunctional Electrocatalysts with High-Entropy Alloys: Bridging Hydrogen Evolution and Oxygen Reduction.

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) have emerged as a promising class of bifunctional electrocatalysts capable of simultaneously driving the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with high activity and durability. Their near-equiatomic multicomponent compositions give rise to unique physicochemical characteristics, including lattice distortion, sluggish diffusion, high-entropy stabilization, and pronounced electronic heterogeneity, that collectively generate diverse and synergistic active sites inaccessible in conventional alloys. This review summarizes recent progre

Development Status of Fe-V-Based High-Entropy Alloys for Nuclear Reactors.

Against the backdrop of the "dual carbon" strategy, clean and efficient energy is the goal that people pursue. Nuclear fusion energy is recognized as a clean energy source worldwide. Due to the high-energy neutrons produced during nuclear fusion reactions, the materials for nuclear fusion reactors are required to be low in activation while also having high resistance to irradiation damage. Both Fe and V are completely low-activation elements, and high-entropy alloys currently exhibit excellent radiation resistance properties. Therefore, Fe-V-based high-entropy alloys may become a competitive c

Comparative entropy analysis of 2D transition metal tetrahydroxyquinones via machine learning approaches.

This paper focuses on the study of the framework of transition metal tetrahydroxyquinone (TM-THQ) which is a chemical belonging to the metal-organic framework (MOF) family. These materials are becoming relevant due to their stability and high surface area that makes them prospective in terms of carbon-dioxide conversion and other uses. To explore the structure of TM-THQ, we apply molecular graph theory, in which atoms and bonds are represented as mathematical graphs. We determine some topological indices, the Zagreb indices, Randić index, the atom-bond connectivity index, the geometric-arithme

Enthalpy-Entropy Compensation Governs the Solvent-Mixing Effect in Electrochemical Thermoelectric Conversion.

Thermocells convert temperature gradients into electrical energy using the entropy change of a redox reaction. The performance of thermocells is governed by the temperature coefficient of electrochemical potential (α), and various strategies are reported to increase α. Solvent mixing has been recognized as one of the effective methods; however, the underlying mechanism remains elusive due to the absence of either systematic experimental or reliable theoretical validation. Herein, we demonstrate that enthalpy-entropy compensation provides a general framework for modeling solvent-mixing effects

Using 19F NMR to quantify enthalpy-entropy compensation in protein-protein interactions.

Protein structural, stability, and functional equilibria are sensitive to the solution environment and governed by enthalpic and entropic contributions. NMR spectroscopy of suitably labeled- or isotopically enriched-samples provides a powerful tool for quantifying protein reactions in solution. Here we apply 19F NMR data, acquired in a systematic effort to assess the equilibrium crowding effects of polyethylene glycols (PEGs), to reveal the first quantitative evidence for enthalpy-entropy compensation in protein-protein complexes. Analysis of the effects of PEG molecular weight and concentrati
