Preservatives in registered chemical products.

Preservatives are common causes of contact allergy and contact dermatitis. Exposure to cosmetics, personal care products, consumer products and occupationally used products often involve contact with the same range of preservatives. The aim of this study is to provide an overview on the occurrence of preservatives in registered chemical products. The studied preservatives included substances from standard patch test series and other preservatives relevant for registered chemical products. Data obtained from the Danish Product Register Database (PROBAS) in January 2005 were compared to similar

Environmental Factors that Impact the Workplace Participation of Transition-Aged Young Adults with Brain-Based Disabilities: A Scoping Review.

Workplace participation of individuals with disabilities continues to be a challenge. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) places importance on the environment in explaining participation in different life domains, including work. A scoping review was conducted to investigate environmental facilitators and barriers relevant to workplace participation for transition-aged young adults aged 18-35 with brain-based disabilities. Studies published between 1995 and 2018 were screened by two reviewers. Findings were categorized into the ICF's environmental domai

Development of a ranking of barriers to the adoption of green roofs in Brazil using Delphi methodology.

Green roofs can contribute to mitigating urban heat islands, managing stormwater, and improving the environmental performance of buildings, however, their adoption in Brazil remains incipient. Although previous studies have examined green roof barriers in different countries, the Brazilian context remains insufficiently characterized in terms of expert-based prioritization, particularly given the absence of official market statistics, the lack of a dedicated national technical standard, and the early-stage development of public policies and incentives. This study produces an empirically valida

Influence Mechanism of Different Environmental Regulations on Carbon Emission Efficiency.

The rational use of environmental regulation tools has become an important means by which to improve the efficiency of carbon emissions. Different types of environmental regulations and their combinations have different impacts on carbon emission efficiency. In order to determine the environmental regulation configurations that may achieve high carbon emission efficiency or lead to low carbon emission efficiency, we constructed an analytical framework of connections between environmental regulation configurations and carbon emission efficiency. Moreover, 30 Chinese provinces from the period co

Did an Ultra-Low Emissions Policy on Coal-Fueled Thermal Power Reduce the Harmful Emissions? Evidence from Three Typical Air Pollutants Abatement in China.

Thermal power generation based on coal-fired power plants has the advantages of stability and controllability and has been the largest source of electricity supply in China. Coal-fired power plants, however, are also accompanied by high carbon emissions and the release of harmful substances (mainly including sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and smoke dust), and are even regarded as the "chief criminal" in terms of air pollution. However, thermal power is also a pioneering industry involved in several environmental regulations and cleaner production techniques before other industries. Evidence

The Dutch N-cascade in the european perspective.

The Netherlands is "well known" for its nitrogen problems; it has one of the highest reactive nitrogen (Nr) emission densities in the world. It is a small country at the delta of several large European rivers. Ever since the industrial revolution, there has been a growing excess of nutrients and related emissions into the atmosphere (ammonia, nitrogen oxides and nitrous oxide) and into groundwater and surface water (nitrate), leading to a large range of cascading environmental impacts. Vehicular traffic, sewage and animal husbandry are the main sources of oxidized and reduced forms of Nr. This

Lessons learned from "the skeptical environmentalist": an environmental health perspective.

Few books about the environment have generated as much heated debate as Bjørn Lomborg's 'The Skeptical Environmentalist: Measuring the Real State of the World', published by Cambridge University Press in 2001. A flavor of the controversy can be gleaned from a series of reviews and rebuttals published in 'Scientific American' (Rennie 2002). In general, most positive reviews appeared in the popular press (e.g., 'The Economist', 'Washington Post Book Review', 'The Wall Street Journal') and most negative reviews appeared in the scientific press (e.g., 'Science', 'Nature', 'Bioscience'). Although '

Biomedical waste management in independent dental practices: Interrogating regulatory challenges, sociocultural dynamics, and environmental health implications in Indonesia.

Effective medical waste management is a critical intersection of public and environmental health that remains a persistent challenge within independent dental practices. These clinics generate hazardous biomedical waste introducing significant risks if inadequately handled due to constrained regulatory oversight and institutional capacity. This study investigated waste management practices among independent dental clinics in Pekanbaru, Indonesia to elucidate the regulatory hurdles, resource deficits, and social and environmental dynamics governing compliance and operational execution. A descri

The causal effect of new energy logistics vehicle policies on respiratory disease mortality rate.

INTRODUCTION: Amid escalating global efforts to address climate change and persistent threats to public health, evaluating the health benefits of environmental policies is of growing significance. METHOD: This study leverages the "Green Freight Distribution Demonstration Project" launched in 2018 as a quasi-natural experiment. Utilizing multi-city panel data from China spanning 2011 to 2024, it employs both a Difference-in-Differences (DID) model and a Double Machine Learning (DML) model to rigorously assess the causal impact of policies promoting new energy logistics vehicles on the mortalit

Correlates of walking to school and implications for public policies: survey results from parents of elementary school children in Austin, Texas.

Walking can be a healthy, sustainable, and equitable mode of transportation, but is not widely used for children's school travel. This study identifies multi-level correlates of walking to/from school and relevant policy implications. We surveyed parents/guardians of 2,695 students from 19 elementary schools in Austin, Texas, which featured diverse sociodemographic and environmental characteristics. Among the personal and social factors, negative correlates were parents' education, car ownership, personal barriers, and school bus availability; positive correlates were parents' and children's p

Advancing environmental exposure assessment science to benefit society.

Awareness of the human health impacts of exposure to air pollution is growing rapidly. For example, it has become evident that the adverse health effects of air pollution are more pronounced in disadvantaged populations. Policymakers in many jurisdictions have responded to this evidence by enacting initiatives that lead to lower concentrations of air pollutants, such as urban traffic restrictions. In this review, we focus on the interplay between advances in environmental exposure assessment and developments in policy. We highlight recent progress in the granular measurement of air pollutants

Do environmental taxes reduce air pollution? Evidence from fossil-fuel power plants in China.

Taking environmental protection into consideration, China introduced the new Environmental Protection Tax Law in 2018, which levies taxes for pollutants with higher standards. The vast majority of existing studies have investigated the impacts of environmental taxes (ETs) at the city level or province level. In contrast, we estimate their effects on pollutant reductions for fossil-fuel power plants in 30 provinces in China. Our results show that ETs have positive effects on pollutant emission reductions compared with the pollution discharge fee policy. We provide empirical evidence that sulfur

Environmental sub models for a macroeconomic model: agricultural contribution to climate change and acidification in Denmark.

Integrated modelling of the interaction between environmental pressure and economic development is a useful tool to evaluate environmental consequences of policy initiatives. However, the usefulness of such models is often restricted by the fact that these models only include a limited set of environmental impacts, which are often energy-related emissions. In order to evaluate the development in the overall environmental pressure correctly, these model systems must be extended. In this article an integrated macroeconomic model system of the Danish economy with environmental modules of energy r

The adverse impact of climate policy uncertainty on air quality in China.

Climate policy uncertainty refers to the ambiguity, unpredictability, and lack of transparency in government policies, measures, regulations, and actions aimed at addressing climate issues. Previous studies have found that climate policy uncertainty affects carbon emissions. However, other environmental impacts of climate policy uncertainty have not been sufficiently analyzed in the literature. This study demonstrates that climate policy uncertainty has a negative impact on air quality in China. Based on data from 288 Chinese cities between 2001 and 2021, we find that climate policy uncertaint

Reduce noise: Enhance health equity-An AAN Consensus Paper.

A growing body of epidemiological studies shows that noise increases the risk for broad-ranging physiological and psychological illnesses. According to the World Health Organization, at least 1.6 million healthy years of life are lost annually in Western Europe due to traffic noise alone. Scholars from selected Expert Panels of the American Academy of Nursing convened to update the information regarding the effects of environmental noise on health disparities, physiological changes in the human body and in animals, and environmental justice issues, and to inform the public and policy makers' e
