Dental amalgam is one of the most commonly used materials in restorative dentistry. However, one of its major components, mercury, is of particular concern due to its potential adverse effects on humans and the environment. In this review, the environmental impact of dental amalgam will be discussed, with particular reference to the effects attributed to its mercury component. Mercury commonly occurs in nature as sulfides and in a number of minerals. Globally, between 20,000-30,000 tons of mercury are discharged into the environment each year as a result of human activities. According to a rec

There is now unequivocal evidence that a wide variety of chemicals capable of disrupting the endocrine system are present in the aquatic environment. These range from natural (e.g. 17beta-oestradiol) and synthetic (e.g. ethinyl oestradiol) oestrogens through to industrial chemicals that can mimic endogenous hormones (e.g. nonylphenol, some pesticides). Relatively little is known about the fate and behaviour of these chemicals in the aquatic environment, and hence it is unclear which organisms are exposed to the chemicals, and to what degree. This makes predicting possible effects difficult. Ne

This article reviews the available epidemiologic evidence for relationships between the development of cancer in childhood and environmental agents, specifically chemicals, ionizing radiation, low-frequency electromagnetic fields, and infectious agents. Chemical exposures include medications and other drugs, components of diet, and second-hand exposure to industrial chemicals and to environmental carcinogens. Ionizing radiation is the only well-established risk factor for childhood cancers. Suggestive associations with excess childhood cancer risk have been found with exposures to paints, petr

This article reviews the effects of lead on genetic systems in the context of lead's various other toxic effects and its abundance and distribution in the environment. Lead is perhaps the longest used and best recognized toxic environmental chemical, yet it continued be used recklessly until only very recently. Lead is thus a lesson in the limitations and strengths of science, human conscience and common sense. Lead has been tested and found to be capable of eliciting a positive response in an extraordinarily wide range of biological and biochemical tests; among them tests for enzyme inhibitio

Titanium dioxide is a brilliant white, nontoxic pigment. It is used worldwide to obtain vivid whites, clean tints, and brillant colors in paints, lacquers, printing inks, plastics, rubber, floorings, paper, fibers, cosmetics, vitreous applications, and other industries. It can be produced through two industrial routes: the sulfate or the chloride process. Whatever production route is used, it produces effluents during the process. In the past, such effluents were freely discharged into the environment (air, water, land) without special care. Today, environmental legislation requires specific t

Occupational renal diseases provide models for understanding environmental renal diseases. Kidney damage in a few workers induced by heavy exposure to identifiable toxins indicates what to expect among the large population exposed to low levels of toxins dispersed in the larger environment. Occupational and environmental renal diseases present a unique opportunity for primary prevention as well as the diagnostic challenge of long latency and multifactorial etiology. The occupational and environmental toxins that cause chronic renal disease include the heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Hg, As, Cr, U), orga

Recently, interest in the potential impact of the environment on our general health has heightened. Particular focus has been directed toward environmental skin injuries because the integument, the only organ of the body that is constantly exposed to the surrounding environment, directly demonstrates the damaging effects of the environment and thereby allows for direct visual recognition by both physicians and laypersons. The characteristic cutaneous features, physiologic responses, therapeutic approaches to promote healing, and preventive measures that may be taken to avoid future environment

The article reviews the problems on epidemiology of cryptosporidiosis and gives a detailed description of the massive waterborne outbreak in Milwaukee (Wisconsin, USA) associated with a break in filtration capacity of a public water supply. The authors emphasize the need for high-quality diagnostic procedures as current coprodiagnostic microscopical techniques seemed to fail to detect Cryptosporidium oocysts.

Contacts of humans with chemicals from the environment occur via air, water or food. In the past most attention was paid to the contamination of water. Well developed and stringent legislation exists in most countries, although health impairments never occurred from environmental chemicals in drinking water. Xenobiotics in water mainly have a marker function for the general pollution of the environment. Therefore measures to detect and eliminate the sources of contamination are often inappropriately taken. For some persistent and (usually) lipophilic xenobiotics in food, especially from animal

Epidemiologic and societal concerns continue to stimulate studies in the field of environmental neurotoxicology. Although the role of heavy metals, aluminum, and iron are unclear in the etiology of human neurodegenerative disorders, these toxins have provided fertile ground for in vivo and in vitro experimental studies to elucidate their role in neurotoxic injury. Experimental models of clinical syndromes are discussed with special relevance to developmental neurotoxicology. Cycloleucine, tellurium, and 1,3-dinitrobenzene provide models of subacute combined degeneration, primary peripheral ner

The acute development of an irritating rash often results in a patient presenting to the Emergency Department instead of scheduling an office visit. This rash is frequently the result of the patient's interaction with the environment. Consequently, it is important that emergency physicians become more familiar with environmentally induced skin disorders. Sunburn and poison ivy are examples of these types of disorders. These and less common environmentally related skin disorders are reviewed.

A literature review on the current situation of echinococcosis in Central Europe is given. The only final host for Echinococcus granulosus in this region ist the dog. The infection rate of dogs with E. granulosus in Central Europe is less than 1%. According to meat inspection statistics in Germany less than 0.008% of sheep, pigs and horses carry larval stages of E. granulosus. Parasitologically confirmed is the occurrence of a cattle-dog strain, the cysts of which were found in 0.26% of slaughter cattle. It is not known whether this strain infects also man as does the sheep-dog strain. Cases o

Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, is a large city of about six million people. According to the rapid growth of economy, Bangkok faces to the problems of urbanization and industrialization. Non-communicable disease such as cardiovascular diseases, cancers are the leading causes of death. There is a trend of increasing air pollution in the congested areas and industrialized zones, with the increase over the ambient air quality standard involving suspended particulate matter. Other public health problems include the sanitation of restaurants, the quality of drinking water and coloring agents in

Acquired methemoglobinemia results from the exposure to various chemicals and drugs able to oxidize hemoglobin at a rate exceeding the normal enzymatic capacity for hemoglobin reduction. Levels of methemoglobin exceeding 60-70% may be associated with coma and death. We describe a case of complete, uneventful recovery involving a 10 week-old infant who presented to the Emergency Department with profound sudden onset of cyanosis, irritability, metabolic acidosis, and a lethal methemoglobin level of 71.4%. Intravenous administration of 12 mg methylene blue resulted in immediate resolution of the

Trichloroethylene is used in paint strippers, rug cleaners, spot removers, typewriter correction fluid and industrial cleaners. It is a common environmental contaminant, detected in over one-third of hazardous waste sites and in 10 percent of groundwater sources. Acute workplace exposure above acceptable levels can cause neurologic, respiratory and hepatic problems. The health effects of prolonged occupational and environmental low-level exposure are probably minimal, but whether such exposure poses a risk remains controversial. Although trichloroethylene has been shown to cause cancer in some

Organic chemicals that are toxic to humans and to the environment can be transformed and metabolized by a variety of microorganisms. Such chemicals include trichloroethylene, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, toluene, phenols, chlorinated phenols, polychlorinated biphenyls and polyaromatic hydrocarbons. This review focuses on some of the most important recent developments in the biodegradation of these toxic chemicals. Depending on the compound and the organism, the extent of our understanding ranges from the molecular level to the conceptual.

During the years of the epidemiological group-diagnostic examination (1982-1986) it was attempted to characterize the atmospheric air pollution in the industrial Rhine-Main area (Wiesbaden and Frankfurt) and, in comparison, in two control areas (Freiburg with the adjacent High Black Forest and the Starnberg area). For this the measurements of the air measuring stations of the network for emissions of the German Umweltbundesamt (Federal Environmental Protection Agency) at Berlin and Frankfurt were used and well as those of the Hessische Landesanstalt für Umwelt, Wiesbaden (Hessian Office for En
