Vanadium is used in alloys, batteries as well as catalyst and is a known impurity in medical devices and pharmaceuticals. The present work describes the calculation of a parenteral tolerable intake (TI) for vanadium by chronic exposure in implantable medical devices per ISO 10993-17:2023, the applicable standard. The 2023 update of ISO 10993-17 [1] introduces new uncertainty factors (UFs) for calculating a TI. Therefore, we noted differences between the ISO guidance and the ICH Q3D guidance on Permissible Daily Exposure (PDE) for parental elemental pharmaceutical impurities. We derived a TI of

With the advancement of radiotherapy technology in the medical field, the amount of radioactive waste has rapidly increased, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has proposed waste deregulation standards based on individual dose, collective dose, and nuclide concentration. The purpose of this study is to define the standard period (1 day) required to measure collected radioactive waste using direct and indirect methods with a radioactivity meter, ensure that the radiation dose remains below the allowable level, and transport the waste safely. In this study, 131 I low-dose (30 mCi)

Due to permanent contact with bodily secretions such as blood and saliva, the dental workplace poses a high risk of infection for patients as well as for personnel. High-speed dental instruments are still considered one of the major hygienic risks, as the high-speed rotation of the attachments leads to the retraction of infectious material from patients' oral cavities. The aim of this study was to investigate the extent to which dental handpieces are contaminated after use. Spray-water samples were taken from different handpieces used in seven dental offices and protein concentrations were mea

The route of transmission of hepatitis C virus is still controversial. Parenteral exposure via blood or blood products leads to infection in the majority of cases, and the majority of intravenous drug users become infected by repetitive exposure to contaminated injection equipment. The risk of infection from a single needlestick injury is 5-15% and may depend on the size of the innoculum. Other parenteral routes of transmission may include traditional healing practices and the use of contaminated medical equipment. Transmission is less common within a family but the prevalence of hepatitis C v

Non-compliant final rinse water (microbial culture results exceeding 10 cfu/100 mL) is an under-recognized risk factor for failure of flexible gastrointestinal (GI) endoscope reprocessing, since it is an important step following disinfection during the reprocessing of flexible endoscopes. Opportunistic premise plumbing pathogens (OPPPs) may colonize terminal segments of the water distribution system and compromise rinse water quality. This study investigated the cause of recurrent final rinse water non-compliance in a GI endoscopy unit and evaluated an engineering intervention to prevent it. D

Bacterial contamination at the anesthesia workstation is common and correlates with an increased rate of postoperative infections. This article emphasizes the importance of strict hygiene regulations in anesthesia and functional areas to prevent nosocomial infections. It summarizes scientific findings and practical recommendations for minimizing contamination of work areas, instruments, and medications. Important measures include organizing the anesthesia workplace into "clean" and "unclean" areas, using hand disinfectants, wearing disposable gloves, and disinfecting hand contact surfaces. Spe

Transmission of iatrogenic prion disease has occurred from contaminated neurosurgical tools, transplant materials, and occupational exposure to prion-contaminated laboratory tools. Prions cause disease by the templated misfolding of the normal cellular form of the prion protein, PrPC, into the misfolded and pathogenic form PrPSc and are invariably fatal. Reducing iatrogenic and occupational prion transmission is challenging. First, prions can bind to and persist on surfaces for long periods of time. Second, prions are highly resistant to inactivation. Given this, surfaces can retain infectivit

Health care providers use several types of syringes in their daily routine to provide or safely deliver therapeutic agents to patients. Pump infusion with a syringe (PIS) are used for the rapid delivery of large amounts of fluid or blood to patients in critical conditions, such as hypovolemic shock. Patients often experience bacterial infections, such as catheter-related bloodstream infections, specifically when they are in critical condition in the intensive care unit (ICU) after surgery or undergoing resuscitation in an emergency department. A previous study has shown that PIS may cause intr

Reprocessing of gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopes and accessories is an essential part of patient safety and quality control in GI endoscopy centers. However, current endoscopic reprocessing guidelines or procedures are not adequate to ensure patient-safe endoscopy. Approximately 5.4 % of the clinically used duodenoscopes remain contaminated with high-concern microorganisms. Thus, the Digestive Endoscopy Society of Taiwan (DEST) sets standards for the reprocessing of GI endoscopes and accessories in endoscopy centers. DEST organized a task force working group using the guideline-revision proces

International guidelines stipulate that autoclavation is necessary to sterilize surgical equipment. World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for decontamination of medical devices require four levels of decontamination: cleaning, low- and high-level disinfection, as well as sterilization. Following disasters, there is a substantial need for wound care surgery. This requires prompt availability of a significant volume of instruments that are adequately decontaminated. Ideally, they should be sterilized using an autoclave, but due to the resource-limited field context, this may be impossible.

BACKGROUND: Dental practice is subjected to biologic risk on a daily basis, a risk that could affect both operators and patients. The aim of this study was to observe that the use of protective devices and medical devices allows to limit and eliminate this risk, especially in the case of cross infections.
METHODS: The methods of disinfection of surfaces and instruments are different and could include both physical and chemical methods. In this in-vitro study the effectiveness of sterilization of microwave methods was assessed. In this study microwave sterilization with a 1800W protocol for 5

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Outbreaks of infections transmitted by duodenoscopes have prompted changes to duodenoscope cleaning protocols. However, little is known about effectiveness of clinical cleaning practices. We present culture data after duodenoscope manufacturer-recommended high-level disinfection (HLD) and quarantine.
METHODS: Our institution adopted a combination of manufacturer-recommended cleaning with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-recommended culture and quarantine in 2015. Duodenoscopes (models TJF-Q180V, TJF-160, and PJF-160; Olympus, Center Valley, Penn, USA) underw
