Cellulose-Based Carbon Molecular Sieve Membranes for Gas Separation: A Review.

In the field of gas separation and purification, membrane technologies compete with conventional purification processes on the basis of technical, economic and environmental factors. In this context, there is a growing interest in the development of carbon molecular sieve membranes (CMSM) due to their higher permeability and selectivity and higher stability in corrosive and high temperature environments. However, the industrial use of CMSM has been thus far hindered mostly by their relative instability in the presence of water vapor, present in a large number of process streams, as well as by

[E-Training program for sterilization in isolated military operations areas: solution adopted by the French army].

French Army Health Service provides medical support for armed forces deployed on external missions. In order to ensure the same health care quality in the theatre and in the metropolis, the Military Health Service provides sterilization of reusable medical devices by its own means. Army pharmacists carrying out an on-site mission comes from different domains: medical biology laboratory, research, medical supplies, hospital pharmacy or yet pharmaceutical laboratory for some reservists. Training program for sterilization in isolated military operations areas is therefore necessary in order to ens

Assessment of Endoscope Reprocessing Using Peer-to-Peer Assessment Through a Clinical Community.

BACKGROUND: Cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization (CDS) of medical devices are intended to help prevent health care-associated infections (HAIs), a significant cause of mortality and morbidity. In February 2013 the Johns Hopkins Health System (JHHS; Baltimore) formed a clinical community of experts and stakeholders--physicians, nurses, administrators, infection control practitioners, risk managers, and regulatory staff--to assess CDS practices across facilities. METHODS: A survey administered to leadership indicated endoscopy areas of risk. An endoscopy tracer tool with eight major perfor

The effect of high concentration potassium permanganate on protein contamination from metallic and synthetic rubber airway equipment.

We tested the hypothesis that supplementary cleaning using potassium permanganate 8 mg.l(-1) eliminates protein deposits from the reusable metallic and synthetic rubber airway equipment. Twenty Macintosh laryngoscope blades (surgical steel), 20 pairs of Magill's forceps (surgical steel) and 20 Guedel airways (synthetic rubber) were allocated to two groups for supplementary cleaning. In group A, the device was immersed in potassium permanganate 8 mg.l(-1). In group B (controls), the device was immersed in sterile water. The devices were then immersed in a protein staining solution, rinsed and t

Best practice for patient self-cleaning of urinary drainage bags.

The best practice for cleansing urinary drainage bags (leg and bed) in a hospital setting can be translated for use by clients for self-care within the home setting. Common household bleach containing 5.25% sodium hypochlorite, diluted in a 1:10 ratio with tap water, is a safe and effective method to reduce colony-forming units per milliliter (CFU/ml) to a study-defined acceptable range of 100 CFU/ml when a standard procedure was consistently used. This practice increases the life of the urinary drainage bag, decreasing the cost for the client. Ascending bacteria from the urinary drainage bag

Cleaning and Disinfection Practices of Reused Alcohol-Based Hand Rub Containers in Health Care Settings: Evidence from Five Rural Districts in Uganda.

Local alcohol-based hand rub (ABHR) production systems in low-resource settings, such as in health care facilities (HCFs) in low- and middle-income countries, frequently reuse containers for storing and dispensing ABHR. Cleaning/disinfection (C/D) of ABHR containers is necessary to safely reuse them and is an integral part of the WHO's guidelines on local ABHR production. However, HCFs may not be aware of the need for C/D; combined with suboptimal implementation, this poses a risk of contamination of ABHR. As part of district-led ABHR production in HCFs in five rural districts in Uganda, we de

Staff Perspectives of Single-use versus Reusable Sterile Textiles: A Qualitative Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Operating theaters contribute significantly to healthcare-related carbon emissions, with single-use surgical textiles being a key contributor. Reusable sterile surgical textiles are available, yet their adoption is not widespread. This study explored the views of hospital staff, including surgeons and those working in procurement, of single-use and reusable sterile textiles. METHOD: This qualitative analysis was conducted in one National Health Service trust in England. Fourteen hospital staff were recruited either via self-selection or purposive sampling to ensure representatio

Green nephrology: water and waste - one year in a hemodialysis unit in Northeastern Brazil and reassessment of dialyzer reprocessing from an environmental perspective.

INTRODUCTION: Hemodialysis is one of the most water-intensive and waste-generating therapies in health care, yet its environmental impact remains poorly documented in low- and middle-income countries. This study aimed to estimate water consumption and solid waste generation in a hemodialysis unit in northeastern Brazil that reprocesses dialyzers, comparing the observed scenario with an estimated counterfactual single-use scenario. METHODS: This was a single-center, retrospective observational study. Aggregate institutional data on water consumption, supply procurement, and waste mass were ana

Cost of reusable gastrointestinal endoscopes to the NHS: findings from a micro-costing study.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to quantify the per-procedure costs of acquiring, maintaining/repairing and reprocessing reusable gastrointestinal endoscopes by observing practices in a large National Health Service (NHS) hospital. METHODS: We conducted a bottom-up micro-costing analysis to capture the costs of reusable gastrointestinal endoscopes using a detailed resource-use data sheet and observations at the University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW). The data sheet drew on the published literature and NHS decontamination guidance. Cost categories included (1) measuring personnel time for re

Generalized Kubelka's theory for light transmission in multilayer materials and its application for UV light penetration in filtering facepiece respirators.

The spread of SARS-CoV-2 has resulted in the shortage of filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs). As a result, the use of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation for disinfection and reuse of FFRs has been the topic of much investigation. In this article, a mathematical model is developed based on Kubelka's theory to determine light transmission in multilayer materials, such as N95 masks. Using this model, the predicted UV transmittance and absorbance of a N95 mask layers were found to be in close agreement with the experimental values. In addition, when the mask was exposed to UV equally from both surfac

Evaluation of the effectiveness of manual and automated dialyzers reprocessing after multiple reuses.

A cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of manual and automated dialyzer reprocessing. Dialyzers were filled with fluid thioglycollate medium from blood and dialysate chambers after being reprocessed and chemically sterilized with 0.2% peracetic acid. They were incubated for 14 days at 35°C ± 2°C, and microbiologic analysis was performed. Microorganisms were identified in 3 of the 11 samples (27.3%) from the blood chambers: Sphingomonas paucimobilis (2/3) and Penicillium spp (1/3) and in 11 of the 11 samples (100%) from the dialysate chambers: S paucimobilis (7/11),
