Life on the margins: the experiences of sexual violence and exploitation among Eritrean asylum-seeking women in Israel.

BACKGROUND: Eritrean migrants in Israel, the majority of whom are seeking asylum, have limited access to institutional support. While the temporary group protection granted to Eritreans by Israel ensures that they are not deported, it does not confer permanent legal status, nor does it allow access to the formal work sector. This study qualitatively explores how political and economic marginalization increases the risk of sexual and other forms of violence as well as the exploitation of Eritrean women asylum seekers living in Israel. METHODS: Twenty-five interviews with key informants, twelve

Harambee! 3.0: Addressing HIV-Stigma and Increasing HIV-Testing in Three African Immigrant Communities in King County.

BACKGROUND: In King County, Washington, the new HIV diagnosis rate is 10 times higher among African immigrants than the general population. Many African immigrants report never testing for HIV due to various reasons, including inaccessible testing, stigma around HIV and testing, and concerns over jeopardizing their immigration status. OBJECTIVES: We partnered with the Ethiopian Community in Seattle, the Eritrean Health Board, and the Congolese United Foundation to deliver community-based HIV testing via health fairs at faith-based organizations in King County. We also worked to address commun

Extrapulmonary tuberculosis in The Netherlands, an epidemiologic overview, 1993-2022.

BACKGROUND: Extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) poses significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges in low-incidence settings like the Netherlands. Despite declining overall tuberculosis (TB) incidence, the proportion of EPTB has risen, especially among migrant populations. This study examines sociodemographic, migration-related, and clinical factors associated with EPTB from 1993 to 2022 to inform TB diagnostics and care. METHODS: A retrospective quantitative analysis of 34,048 TB patients reported to the Netherlands Tuberculosis Registry (1993-2022) was conducted. Logistic regression was

Comparison of prevalence estimates of pfhrp2 and pfhrp3 deletions in Plasmodium falciparum determined by conventional PCR and multiplex qPCR and implications for surveillance and monitoring.

OBJECTIVES: The accuracy of malaria rapid diagnostic tests is threatened by Plasmodium falciparum with pfhrp2/3 deletions. This study compares gene deletion prevalence determined by multiplex real time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and conventional polymerase chain reaction (cPCR) using existing samples with clonality previously determined by microsatellite genotyping. METHODS: Multiplex qPCR was used to estimate prevalence of pfhrp2/3 deletions in three sets of previously collected patient samples from Eritrea and Peru. The qPCR was validated by multiplex digital polymerase chain reaction

Sensitive Diagnosis and Post-Treatment Follow-Up of Schistosoma mansoni Infections in Asymptomatic Eritrean Refugees by Circulating Anodic Antigen Detection and Polymerase Chain Reaction.

The increasing number of refugees coming from or passing through Schistosoma-endemic areas and arriving in Europe highlights the importance of screening for schistosomiasis on arrival, and focuses attention on the choice of diagnostic test. We evaluate the diagnostic performance of circulating anodic antigen (CAA) detection in 92 asymptomatic refugees from Eritrea. Results were compared with already-available stool microscopy, serology, and urine point-of-care circulating cathodic antigen (POC-CCA) data. For a full diagnostic comparison, real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and the POC-CC

Prevalence of anencephaly in Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Anencephaly is a severe anomaly of the brain that results from the failure of the cephalic part of the neural tube to close during the fourth week. It occurs at least in one per thousand births and is the major cause of fetal loss and disabilities in newborns. The objective of this review is to determine the birth prevalence of anencephaly in Africa. We identified relevant studies via a search of databases like PubMed Central, PubMed/Medline, Science Direct, Joanna Briggs Institute, African Journals Online, Embase, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library. After examining the heter

Is Screening for Anemia in Newly Arrived Refugees Recommendable? A Cross-Sectional Study of Anemia Prevalence in Refugees Resettled in Aarhus, Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Anemia is a major contributor to the global burden of disease and is associated with poor health outcomes and impaired quality of life. Refugees often flee from countries with poverty or conflict and deteriorating health systems. As a result, refugees are vulnerable to several underlying causes of anemia. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of anemia and its associations with sociodemographic factors in refugees resettling in Denmark. METHODS: This cross-sectional study is based on health assessments comprising medical interviews, physical examinations, and blood sample

Systematic map of recent evidence on reproductive performance of cattle in Africa.

Good cattle reproductive performance is essential for livestock productivity. Farmers are highly dependent on the success of productive outputs to support their livelihoods. In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), however, optimal reproduction of cows and bulls is comparatively less well defined, with information on key reproductive parameters and reproductive management often not available. The aim of this study was to collate and synthesise the recent published evidence on cattle reproductive performance in selected sub-Saharan countries.Systematic mapping methodology was used, with sea

Seroprotection rates of vaccine-preventable diseases among newly arrived Eritrean asylum seekers in Switzerland: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: According to 2016 World Health Organization and United Nations Children's Fund country estimates, Eritrea has overall high vaccination coverage with immunization rates for three doses of diphtheria/tetanus/pertussis and polio vaccine of 95%, for two doses measles vaccine of 85% and for three doses hepatitis B vaccine of 85%. If confirmed, this could imply that routine basic vaccination of newly arrived Eritreans could be safely omitted. METHODS: We used stored serum samples from two cross-sectional studies that screened newly arrived Eritrean refugees for infectious diseases. Cons

Episiotomy and severe perineal trauma among Eastern African immigrant women giving birth in public maternity care: A population based study in Victoria, Australia.

BACKGROUND: Eastern African immigrants from countries affected by female genital mutilation have resettled in many developed countries, including Australia. Although possibly at risk of perineal trauma and episiotomy, research investigating their perineal status post-migration is sparse. AIM: To investigate variations in episiotomy use and incidence of severe perineal tear for women born in Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan compared with Australian-born women. METHODS: A population-based study of 203,206 Australian-born and 3502 Eastern African immigrant women admitted as public patients,

Spatially explicit Schistosoma infection risk in eastern Africa using Bayesian geostatistical modelling.

Schistosomiasis remains one of the most prevalent parasitic diseases in the tropics and subtropics, but current statistics are outdated due to demographic and ecological transformations and ongoing control efforts. Reliable risk estimates are important to plan and evaluate interventions in a spatially explicit and cost-effective manner. We analysed a large ensemble of georeferenced survey data derived from an open-access neglected tropical diseases database to create smooth empirical prevalence maps for Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma haematobium for a total of 13 countries of eastern Afri

Knowledge on postnatal care among postpartum mothers during discharge in maternity hospitals in Asmara: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The early postnatal period is a dangerous time for both mother and baby where morbidity and mortality are highly prevalent if proper care is not done. Post natal care (PNC) knowledge has significant role in reducing such complications. In this study, the knowledge of postpartum mothers on PNC and its determinants were determined. METHODS: A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted in postpartum mothers (PpM) who attended all maternal delivery services in Asmara. Data was collected by a structured questionnaire. All (n = 250) PpM who gave birth in December, 2017 were includ

A global, regional, and national survey on burden and Quality of Care Index (QCI) of hematologic malignancies; global burden of disease systematic analysis 1990-2017.

BackgroundHematologic malignancies (HMs) are a heterogeneous group of cancers that comprise diverse subgroups of neoplasms. So far, despite the major epidemiologic concerns about the quality of care, limited data are available for patients with HMs. Thus, we created a novel measure-Quality of Care Index (QCI)-to appraise the quality of care in different populations.MethodsThe Global Burden of Disease data from 1990 to 2017 applied in our study. We performed a principal component analysis on several secondary indices from the major primary indices, including incidence, prevalence, mortality, ye

Directed differentiation of human iPSCs to functional ovarian granulosa-like cells via transcription factor overexpression.

INTRODUCTION: Suprapubic prostatectomy remains a very common surgical treatment for bladder outlet obstruction from an enlarged prostate in the developing world. It is a technically simple procedure which can be learned by nonurologists who perform the bulk of these procedures in the developing world. Intraoperative and postoperative bleeding, however, can be a problem. We describe our experience with prostatic fossa packing at the time of the procedure, as a very simple, quick and effective technique for maximal hemostasis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We have used this technique for several years

Efficacy of ivermectin mass-drug administration to control scabies in asylum seekers in the Netherlands: A retrospective cohort study between January 2014 - March 2016.

Scabies is a skin infestation with the mite Sarcoptes scabiei causing itch and rash and is a major risk factor for bacterial skin infections and severe complications. Here, we evaluated the treatment outcome of 2866 asylum seekers who received (preventive) scabies treatment before and during a scabies intervention programme (SIP) in the main reception centre in the Netherlands between January 2014 and March 2016. A SIP was introduced in the main national reception centre based on frequent observations of scabies and its complications amongst Eritrean and Ethiopian asylum seekers in the Netherl
