OBJECTIVES: Platelet clumps present in anticoagulant specimens may generate a falsely decreased platelet count and lead to an incorrect diagnosis. A clear understanding of the ability of a haematology analyser (HA) to detect platelet clumps is important for routine work in the clinical laboratory.

The riboflavin status of 64 children suffering from malarial infection was assessed by measuring the activation coefficient of erythrocyte glutathione reductase. Thirty-five children were found to be deficient in riboflavin whereas in 29 children riboflavin status was within the normal range. BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Patients with microcytosis (defined as mean corpuscular volume < 80 fL) are not uncommonly found in oral mucosal disease clinics. This study assessed the anemia statuses and hematinic deficiencies in 240 oral mucosal disease patients with microcytosis.
METHODS: The mean red blood cell (RBC) count, mean corpuscular volume, and RBC distribution width, as well as blood concentrations of hemoglobin (Hb), iron, vitamin B12, folic acid, and homocysteine in 240 microcytosis patients and in 240 age- and sex-matched healthy control individuals were measured and compared.

The mechanisms by which alpha(+)-thalassaemia protects against severe malaria, and severe malarial anaemia in particular, are poorly understood. A recent report proposes that the increased count of microcytic and hypochromic erythrocytes in alpha(+)-thalassaemia reduces the haemoglobin decline during acute malaria and, thus, reduces the risk of anaemia. This mechanism might add to further alpha(+)-thalassaemic attributes that are involved in the attenuation of anaemia caused by both acute and chronic Plasmodium infections.

Thirty-eight women with beta-thalassaemia trait and thirty-five normal Asian women were studied retrospectively during normal pregnancies. The red cell size increased in both groups, with a mean increase of 2.3 fl (SD 2.3) in the women with beta-thalassaemia trait and a significantly higher increase of 4.3 fl (SD 2.1) in the normal Asian women. The rise in red cell size during pregnancy which is a physiological change, is thus impaired by defective globin-chain synthesis as well as by iron deficiency.

The splenic uptake of 51Cr-labelled autologous erythrocytes was studied by body surface counting in 20 hemodialysis patients. Evidence for splenic hypersequestration of erythrocytes was obtained in 7 patients. Splenectomy was performed in 6 of these and led to a reduction in transfusion requirements. One patient without evidence of splenic hypersequestration of red cells was also subjected to splenectomy but was not improved. The importance of following the splenic uptake of 51Cr for a sufficiently long time to detect a delayed uptake of 51Cr is pointed out.

The haematology and histopathology of seven-week-old broilers were examined after periods of early food restriction, for six, 10 or 14 days from six days old.
