Investigated were 10 clinically normal calves with which transfusion was carried out of incompatible isogenic blood at the rate of 2-4 cm3/kg body weight against which they had immune isoerythroantibodies. It was established that SGOT and SGPT rose, and this was associated with the erythrocyte hemolysis, drop of Ca, P, K, and Na and total protein to the detriment of albumins. During all periods following the transfusion there was hypoalbuminemia with compensatory hyperglobulinemia and increase in the alfa 1, alfa 2, beta 1 and gamma-globulin subfractions. The beta 3 globulins were lacking at t

The incidence of maternal hemorrhage and blood transfusion has increased over time. Causes of massive hemorrhage, defined as a transfusion > 10 units of erythrocytes, include abnormal placental insertion, preeclampsia, and placental abruption. Although ratio-based transfusion has been described for managing massive hemorrhage, a goal-directed approach using laboratory or point-of-care data may lead to better outcomes. Autotransfusion, which involves the collection, washing, and filtration of maternal shed blood, avoids many of the complications associated with allogeneic blood transfusion. In

Patients with sickle cell disease have abnormal red blood cells (RBCs). This can cause chronic hemolytic anemia and vaso-occlusion leading to tissue hypoxemia and organ dysfunction. RBC exchange transfusion can, without increasing the whole-blood viscosity, quickly replace abnormal erythrocytes with normal and raise the hematocrit resulting in improved delivery of oxygen to hypoxic tissues. Unfortunately, transfusion can also be associated with complications. This paper reviews the role of transfusion, both simple and exchange, in the treatment and prevention of sickle-related complications. T

AIM: Alloimmunization depends on the type of the erythrocyte antigen, as well as the number of transfused doses of blood and recipient factors reflected in genetic and immunological status, comorbidities and therapy. The aim was to determine the frequency and type of antierythrocyte antibodies, to examine the correlation between the number of transfused doses and the frequency of antibodies, as well as the influence of recipient factors on the prevalence of antierythrocyte antibodies in polytransfused patients.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted in the Department of Pretransfusion T

Deficiency of serum magnesium is associated with the incidence of migraine attacks. The present study aimed to evaluate plasma and erythrocyte magnesium levels in a group of patients diagnosed with migraine. Human donors were selected from basic health units (migraine, n = 25) and from a collection and transfusion unit (control, n = 25), both located in the city of Sinop, Brazil. Plasma and erythrocyte magnesium were assessed using flame atomic absorption. Plasma magnesium concentration was significantly lower in the migraine group (0.172 ± 0.018) compared to the control group (0.197 ± 0.020 m

An 84-year-old women had repeated gastrointestinal bleeding from a Dieulafoy lesion, i.e. a gastric or duodenal ulcer containing an aberrant artery. Her blood group was AB-D negative; her Rhesus phenotype was CCdee. In addition, antibody screening revealed anti-c alloantibodies as the result of a previous transfusion. Donors negative for D and c are very rare in Caucasian populations. Compatible red cell concentrates are available only from the European Bank of Frozen Blood of the Council of Europe, located at Sanquin in Amsterdam, Tthe Netherlands. The patient could be saved by requesting com

In an investigation of the effects of intrauterine, intravascular transfusions (IUT) on fetal and neonatal hemolysis and erythropoiesis, 12 fetuses who received IUT for treatment of severe isoimmunization had serial measurements of hemoglobin concentration, Kleihauer-Betke stains to detect fetal hemoglobin-containing erythrocytes, and determination of plasma erythropoietin (EPO) concentration before each IUT, at birth, and postnatally. Reticulocyte counts and sensitizing antibody titers were measured in five fetuses. Mean values before the first IUT, before the final IUT, and at birth were as

Packed red blood cells (PRBC) are indispensable but high-risk therapeutic agents with a high quality of preparation but the safety of administration is compromised by avoidable errors. The physician's decision for a transfusion must consider both the inherent risk profile of the high-quality product and the safety of administration. Key problem areas in the clinical use of PRBCs include confusion of products and hemolytic transfusion reactions due to process or identification errors, undertransfusion resulting from logistical bottlenecks or misjudgement and overtransfusion due to the overrelia

Red cell transfusions represent the main treatment of acute blood loss anemia; however, there are patients who are unable or refuse to receive blood products. Further, in all patients, it is essential to only transfuse when the benefits of transfusion outweigh the risks. In those patients who are unable to receive a blood transfusion, it is important to have a multidisciplinary treatment plan. Further, for those patients requiring surgery, it is important to consider the pre-, intra-, and postoperative periods. Many of the principles and strategies outlined in this article can be applied to pa

Our understanding of the risks associated with perioperative anemia and transfusion, in terms of increased morbidity and mortality, has evolved over the past 2 decades. By contrast, our understanding of the potential mechanisms of injury and optimal treatment strategies remains incomplete. As such, the important role of effective patient blood management (PBM) programs, which address both the effective treatment of anemia and minimizes the need for red blood cell (RBC) transfusion, is of central importance to optimizing patient care and improving patient outcomes. We report on important clinic

Sickle cell disease (SCD) presents with a dynamic background of haemolysis and deepening anaemia. This increases the demand for transfusion if any additional strain on haemopoiesis is encountered due to any other physiological or pathological causes. Patients with cerebrovascular accidents are placed on chronic blood transfusion; those with acute sequestration and acute chest syndrome are likewise managed with blood transfusion. These patients are prone to develop complications of blood transfusion including alloimmunization and hyperhaemolytic syndrome (HHS). This term is used to describe hae

Red blood cell (RBC) antigen matching beyond ABO and RhD is commonly recommended for patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) and thalassaemia. We present an updated systematic literature review to inform evidence-based guidelines on RBC matching. The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) tool was used to develop recommendations. Six new observational studies (4 prospective, 2 retrospective) were identified. The six studies reported on 583 patients in total, including cross-over designs, with sample sizes from 10 to 343. Studies were heterogeneous, utilisin

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the association of blood donor variables on the outcome of patients undergoing cardiac surgery.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A retrospective observational study was conducted on patients who had cardiac surgery between January 2018 and December 2020. Blood donor characteristics such as age (≤ or >30 years), sex, and body mass index (BMI) (≤ or >25 kg/m2) were analyzed for association with patient outcomes (length of hospital stay (LOS), mortality, and readmission). Sex matching was done as fully match, fully mismatch, and partial mismatch. Cox regression an

Four anticoagulant solutions were added to baboon red blood cells prior to labeling with 51Cr to determine how each would influence the distribution of 51Cr within the red blood cells, the loss of 51Cr from the red blood cells after transfusion, and the calculated red cell survival value. The 51Cr label was detected in the hemoglobin and in the low molecular weight compounds within the red blood cells. The elution of 51Cr from labeled baboon red blood cells following transfusion could not be explained by the distribution of 51Cr between hemoglobin and low molecular weight compounds within the

Red blood cell transfusions are a frequent intervention in critically ill patients, including in those who are receiving mechanical ventilation. Both these interventions can impact negatively on lung function with risks of transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI) and other forms of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The interactions between transfusion, mechanical ventilation, TRALI and ARDS are complex and other patient-related (e.g., presence of sepsis or shock, disease severity, and hypervolemia) or blood product-related (e.g., presence of antibodies or biologically active med

Having direct access to the fetoplacental circulation by ultrasound-directed needle puncture has led to therapeutic interventions for fetal anemia and thrombocytopenia. Most cases of red cell alloimmunization associated with fetal anemia are caused by the antibody to the D red cell antigen. The intravascular transfusion of red cells to a hydropic fetus in such cases has notably improved survival. Nonimmune hydrops fetalis due to maternal parvovirus infection has also been treated successfully with the intravascular transfusion of red cells, whereas fetomaternal hemorrhage has not proved amenab

INTRODUCTION: Current storage methods for red blood cell (RBC) products require refrigeration or freezing, but this can pose significant issues in resource-constrained environments or during national emergencies where there is no access to cold storage equipment. To address this challenge, we are developing a new freeze-dried RBC product that can be stored in a dried state at ambient temperatures for long periods of time. A recently developed freeze-dried RBC product was shown to bind oxygen effectively, but increased hemolysis can occur during the freeze-drying process, which can cause toxici
