Feminist theoretical perspectives on ethics in radiology.

The substantive safety of radiological and other medical procedures can be radically reduced by unconscious factors governing scientific thought. In addition, the historical exclusion of women from these disciplines has possibly skewed their development in directions that now need to be addressed. This paper focuses on three such factors: gendered libidos that privilege risk taking over prevention, fragmented forms of knowledge that encourage displaced forms of responsibility and group dynamics that discourage critique of accepted practices and limit the definition of one's group. The substant

Scapegoating and the unpopular nurse.

This paper considers the theories of scapegoating and their application to nursing. It reviews the literature on scapegoating drawing particular attention to those studies which have emphasised on the instrumental uses of scapegoating in organisational contexts. The paper draws on data from a qualitative study of the identification and management of the 'problem' nurse conducted in three healthcare Trusts. It describes a number of illustrative cases in which different types of scapegoating occurred. The paper argues that scapegoating is an ethical challenge which nurses must face.

When the platform becomes a co-author: Self-writing about HPV vaccination on social media as technologies of the self.

Since the HPV vaccine's introduction in China, growing numbers of women have proactively vaccinated and shared their experiences and bodily sensations on social media, engaging in health-centered self-writing. Based on Foucault's theory of 'technologies of the self', this study views such practices as a digital-age form of reflection and subject formation. Through participatory observation and in-depth interviews with 26 participants, the study found that the technologies of the self have shifted from traditional private reflection to a platform-led co-creation, with digital media participatin

Differential formative effects of service-learning in early psychology training: ethical, socioemotional and technical competences in a Chilean context.

Service-learning is widely recognized as an active pedagogy in higher education, yet evidence on its differential effects across distinct formative dimensions, particularly in the early stages of professional training, remains limited. This study examined second-year psychology students' perceptions of service-learning experiences implemented in schools and social organizations at a regional university in southern Chile. Using a convergent mixed-methods design, a 57-item Likert-type survey covering 10 formative dimensions was combined with four open-ended questions analyzed through inductive t

Ethics of emerging infectious disease outbreak responses: Using Ebola virus disease as a case study of limited resource allocation.

Emerging infectious diseases such as Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), Nipah Virus Encephalitis and Lassa fever pose significant epidemic threats. Responses to emerging infectious disease outbreaks frequently occur in resource-constrained regions and under high pressure to quickly contain the outbreak prior to potential spread. As seen in the 2020 EVD outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the current COVID-19 pandemic, there is a continued need to evaluate and address the ethical challenges that arise in the high stakes environment of an emerging infectious disease outbreak response. The

"Whose perfection is it anyway?": a virtuous consideration of enhancement.

Discussions of genetic enhancements often imply deep suspicions about human desires to manipulate or enhance the course of our future. These unspoken assumptions about the arrogance of the quest for perfection are at odds with the normally hopeful resonancy we find in contemporary theology. The author argues that these fears, suspicions and accusations are misplaced. The problem lies not with the question of whether we should pursue perfection, but rather what perfection we are pursuing. The author argues that perfection, properly understood, has an enormously positive function in the Roman Ca

Anencephalic infants as organ donors.

Transplantation technology has been refined in recent years and now offers hope to pediatric patients with a variety of end stage disease processes. The lack of available donors for the smallest potential organ recipients has led to the suggestion that anencephalic infants be used as organ donors. This suggested policy is contrary to current law and raises fundamental ethical issues relating to the definition of death and the treatment of the dying. The technical issues in the potential organ supply from this source are described and the opposing ethical positions developing in this debate are

Developing a competency model for clinical nurse educators to support nursing career ladder advancement: A grounded theory study.

BACKGROUND: Clinical nurse educators greatly impact the development of high-quality clinical learning experiences. However, globally, the role remains inconsistently defined, and competency frameworks are rarely integrated with structured career ladder systems, limiting professional development and workforce sustainability. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop an empirically grounded competency model for clinical nurse educators integrated with a structured career ladder to support progressive professional development in clinical education settings. METHODS: A qualitative study using a Str

Protocol for a realist evaluation of Recovery College dementia courses: understanding coproduction through ethnography.

INTRODUCTION: Support following a dementia diagnosis in the UK is variable. Attending a Recovery College course with and for people with dementia, their supporters and healthcare professionals (staff), may enable people to explore and enact ways to live well with dementia. Recovery Colleges are established within mental health services worldwide, offering peer-supported short courses coproduced in partnership between staff and people with lived experience of mental illness. The concept of recovery is challenging in dementia narratives, with little evidence of how the Recovery College model cou

Medical Assistance in Dying as a Cultural Conflict: Conceptualizing Chinese Immigrants' Navigation in Canada.

Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) was legalized in Canada in 2016 but remains illegal in China. Due to distinct cultural, social, and political differences between China and Canada, MAID can be a cultural conflict for Chinese immigrants after they immigrate to Canada. To better understand their navigation of MAID in Canada, three theoretical lenses are adopted. Confucian ethics serve as a theoretical framework for understanding how life is perceived from a collectivistic, relational, and moral perspective in Chinese culture. Autonomy theory is used to understand how life is understood from an

A quiet endurance: pragmatic family resilience in Chinese dementia care.

INTRODUCTION: Dementia research has overlooked the family as a collective unit of resilience. This study aimed to develop a substantive theory of family resilience for dementia care in China, a nation characterized by its high-context culture. METHODS: Employing a constructivist grounded theory approach, we conducted in-depth interviews with 36 participants from 21 families. Data were collected between March 2023 and April 2024. Data were analyzed concurrently using constant comparative methods, including initial, focused, and theoretical coding. RESULTS: The analysis generated the theory of

Optimising implementation of reforms to better prevent and respond to child sexual abuse in institutions: Insights from public health, regulatory theory, and Australia's Royal Commission.

The Australian Royal Commission Into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse has identified multiple systemic failures to protect children in government and non-government organizations providing educational, religious, welfare, sporting, cultural, arts and recreational activities. Its recommendations for reform will aim to ensure organizations adopt more effective and ethical measures to prevent, identify and respond to child sexual abuse. However, apart from the question of what measures institutions should adopt, an under-explored question is how to implement and regulate those measur

Tokenistic co-design: participation without power in Indigenous health evaluations.

OBJECTIVES: Co-design evaluation methodology can be appropriate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing programs due to its principles of power-sharing and collaboration. We argue, however, that commissioners of evaluations use the term, co-design, uncritically to describe activities that are misaligned with contemporary co-design theory. METHODS: Through qualitative interview data with key stakeholders in the commissioning process (commissioners, evaluators and service providers), we examined perceptions and sentiments towards the use and misuse of co-design in the pro

Surgical treatment of presbyopia: scleral, corneal, and lenticular.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Having solved most of the problems concerning myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism, it is perfectly understandable that the surgical treatment of presbyopia should be next on the agenda. It is a new challenge where every possible aspect is explored. RECENT FINDINGS: The past five years have been troubled by the debate over von Helmholtz theory on accommodation. Numerous investigations have been carried out on the primate and humans using various procedures. The more we learn about this mechanism, the nearer we will be to finding a solution to presbyopia. It appears essential

The Other Side of the Stethoscope: Clinician-Facing Deepfakes and the Symmetry of Synthetic Deception.

BACKGROUND: Clinical ethics scholarship on deepfakes has focused primarily on patients as targets of synthetic deception, in which fabricated audiovisual material alters patient beliefs about clinicians and care. This focus neglects the reverse epistemic vulnerability: clinicians themselves as recipients of synthetic, adversarially generated clinical information. OBJECTIVE: To develop a conceptual analysis of clinician-facing deepfakes and their implications for clinical epistemology, diagnostic reasoning, and institutional trust. METHODS: Normative and conceptual analysis drawing on virtue

How can we strengthen mental health services in Swedish youth clinics? A health policy and systems study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Strengthening first-line mental healthcare services for youth remains a priority for the Swedish government. The government is currently investigating how different sectors involved can be strengthened, but evidence is scarce. Youth clinics play a key role in these discussions, being one of the most trusted services for youth. However, analysis of organisational functions and coordination with other services is important to strengthen youth clinics' role in first-line mental healthcare. This study investigates these challenges and aims to analyse the integration of mental healthc

Application and challenges of using a Constructivist Grounded Theory methodology to address an undertheorized clinical challenge: A discussion paper.

BACKGROUND: The benefits of nurse-led therapeutic patient education regarding wound healing and the prevention of recurrences for individuals living with a venous leg ulcer remain unclear. Obtaining the individuals perspective could offer an in depth understanding of why and how they engage or not, in self-management strategies following nurse-led patient education. Despite strong evidence indicating the need for further investigation into the benefits of therapeutic patient education in this population there is a lack of research into how individuals cope with chronic venous insufficiency or

The impact of CEOs' academic backgrounds on corporate financialization.

While prior research has examined macroeconomic drivers of corporate financialization, little is known about how top executives' personal traits shape this phenomenon. Drawing on imprinting theory, this study investigates whether and how CEOs' academic backgrounds influence corporate financialization. Using data from Chinese A-share non-financial listed companies (2010-2022), we employ multiple regression analyses to test the relationships and underlying mechanisms. The results show that CEOs with academic backgrounds significantly reduce corporate financialization, particularly in non-state-o
