Etomidate (ETO) is used as an anesthetic in surgery, but it is being abused in some populations. The damage caused by long-term intake of ETO to intestinal and brain functions is not yet clear, and it remains to be determined whether the drug affects the central nervous system through the gut-brain axis. This study aimed to investigate the neurotoxic and gastrointestinal effects of ETO at doses of 1 mg/kg and 3 mg/kg in mice over 14 consecutive days. The results showed that long-term injection of ETO led to drug resistance in mice, affecting their innate preference for darkness and possibly in

BACKGROUND: Remimazolam tosilate (RT) is a new ultrashort-acting γ-aminobutyric acid subtype A (GABAA) agonist, with the characteristics of rapid onset and offset, minimal cardiorespiratory depression. Currently, few studies have compared the effect of RT and etomidate on hemodynamics during anesthesia induction. Here, we aimed to compare the hemodynamic effects of different doses of RT and etomidate for anesthesia induction in patients undergoing cardiac surgeries.
METHODS: Patients were recruited from January to September 2022 in this single-center, prospective, randomized, double-blind tri

BACKGROUND: Many of the anaesthetic drugs used for electroconvulsive therapy have anticonvulsant properties and may influence efficacy of electroconvulsive therapy. With this study we aim to provide more information on the effect of etomidate and methohexital on seizure duration. We explore the relationship between induction drug, motor and electroencephalography seizure duration. Moreover, we study the relationship of seizure duration and number of therapies.
METHODS: In this retrospective study we collected data from patient records from 2005 until 2016. Inclusion criteria were the use of e

Intraperitoneal (IP) injection is a common route of anesthetic administration in mice. Ketamine-xylazine (KX) anesthesia is one of the most widely used IP protocols, but has limitations. Etomidate is an alternative to ketamine that has been used in both human and veterinary medicine yet has not been widely studied in mice. The purpose of this study was to evaluate etomidate-xylazine (EX) anesthesia as an alternative to KX. We hypothesized that EX would be as safe and effective as KX, with both sex- and strain-dependent differences. Male and female Crl:CD1(ICR), C57BL/6NCrl, BALB/cJ and NU/J mi

UNLABELLED: The optimum induction agent for anesthesia for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has been long debated. Ideal agent should be short acting with minimal suppression of seizure potentials. Recent studies have suggested longer seizure duration with etomidate in comparison to propofol, thiopental, and methohexital. The aim of the present meta-analysis was to pool data available from studies comparing systematically the efficacy of etomidate against other induction agents in terms of seizure duration (both electroencephalography (EEG) and motor).

BACKGROUND: ECT is a well-established treatment for severe depression. The available data on psychosis are limited, but reliable. Its therapeutic potential relies on the induction of a generalized seizure. Besides other narcotics, methohexital and etomidate are used for general anesthesia in ECT. Since prolonged seizures have been reported following the use of etomidate, it can be deduced that the substances might differ in their anticonvulsant properties, resulting in a lower increase in stimulus intensity during the course of treatment under etomidate. Besides this hypothesis, we aimed to in

Etomidate is a nonbarbiturate hypnotic agent which, like the barbiturates, decreases the cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen consumption (CMRO2) 35-50%. The present studies assessed whether etomidate decreased CMRO2 through temperature-dependent mechanisms and whether the combination of etomidate and moderate hypothermia (28 degrees C) decreased CMRO2 more than hypothermia alone. Nineteen anesthetized dogs were treated with saline, etomidate (burst-suppressive doses), etomidate with hypothermia, or hypothermia alone. Etomidate did not affect (p > 0.05) the mean arterial pressure (MAP, mm Hg) but

The cerebral protective effects of etomidate were evaluated in a model of incomplete forebrain ischemia. Fourteen Wistar-Kyoto rats were anesthetized with halothane. After preparation, the rats were alloted to either the control group (halothane anesthesia, n = 7) or the etomidate group (n = 7). In the etomidate group, immediately before and during the period of ischemia, the animals received etomidate in sufficient concentration to achieve electroencephalogram burst suppression (loading dose, 7.5 mg/kg; infusion, 0.3-0.5 mg/kg/min). Both groups were subjected to a 10-minute ischemic insult ac

The response of the carotid body chemoreceptors to intracarotid administration of thiopentone, etomidate and propofol was tested in the rabbit and cat. Thiopentone 3-6 mg min-1 and etomidate 300-600 micrograms min-1 were mildly excitatory, shifting the oxygen and carbon dioxide response curves upwards. Propofol 1.5-3.0 mg min-1 was a potent chemodepressant and abolished discharge at PaO2 values greater than 8 kPa. Prolonged infusion of propofol at higher rates (6 mg min-1) abolished the response to hypoxia completely. The significance of these results is discussed in relation to the known vent

BACKGROUND: The co-occurrence of etomidate use disorder (EUD) and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) poses significant challenges in clinical assessment and management. This study aims to develop a predictive model to estimate the risk of ASPD in EUD patients.
METHODS: Male patients with EUD were recruited from a drug rehabilitation center between March and December 2024. Behavioral, health, psychological, and sociodemographic variables were collected, and diagnoses of ASPD were established using the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI). The baseline variables were screene

PURPOSE: Etomidate offers hemodynamic stability for anesthesia induction but frequently causes myoclonus. This study evaluated oliceridine, a G-protein biased μ-opioid receptor agonist, for prevention of etomidate-induced myoclonus.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this double-blind, randomized trial, patients scheduled for elective general anesthesia were allocated to receive either intravenous oliceridine 0.03 mg/kg (Group O) or an equivalent volume of normal saline (Group NC) 5 minutes before anesthesia induction with 0.3 mg/kg etomidate administered over 30-60s. The primary outcome was the incide

Vaping etomidate is currently a red-hot social issue where the drug abuse problem has led to health concerns and even reported deaths for adolescents. Therefore, a fast, sensitive, and cost-effective detection tool for etomidate is urgently needed to support law enforcement. A chromium(III) complex-based sensor, EtoChrom, is presented in this work as an example of a detection method for etomidate based on a colorimetric assay. This low-priced but novel sensor exhibits an eye-catching colour change from purple to yellow and a bathochromic shift in the absorption band upon etomidate binding. Thu

INTRODUCTION: The Wada test involves the intracarotid injection of anesthetics-commonly etomidate-to transiently anesthetize one hemisphere for assessing language and memory dominance during presurgical evaluation. However, evidence on guiding intracarotid etomidate remains limited. This retrospective study aimed to investigate cannabis use and other factors such as body weight that may influence the intracarotid etomidate dosing regimen.
METHODS: We included all adults who underwent the Wada test at our institution between February 2012 and January 2024. The primary exposure was cannabis use
