Somatosensory Evoked Potentials and Neuroprognostication After Cardiac Arrest.

Improved understanding of post-cardiac arrest syndrome and clinical practices such as targeted temperature management have led to improved mortality in this cohort. Attention has now been placed on development of tools to aid in predicting functional outcome in comatose cardiac arrest survivors. Current practice uses a multimodal approach including physical examination, neuroimaging, and electrophysiologic data, with a primary utility in predicting poor functional outcome. These modalities remain confounded by self-fulfilling prophecy and the withdrawal of life-sustaining therapies. To date, a

[Cerebral Blood Flow Monitoring and Motor Evoked Potentials].

Near infra-red spectroscopy (NIRS) and motor evoked potentials (MEP) have been used to monitor brain and spinal cord ischemia. NIRS calculates oxygen saturation of hemoglobin, based on the modified Beer-Lambert law. It correlates with the change in regional tissue blood flow. However, the technology is not matured enough for the measured value to be used as an index of tissue oxygenation, so that relative change should be carefully followed. Myogenic MEP has widely been used to monitor spinal cord ischemia, since the introduction of pulse train transcranial electrical stimulation. It evaluates

Monitoring Corticocortical Evoked Potentials During Intracranial Vascular Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring of corticocortical evoked potentials (CCEPs) during brain tumor surgery of patients under anesthesia was recently reported to be effective in assisting in preservation of speech function. The aim of this study was to investigate whether CCEPs can be reproducibly measured between the frontal and temporal lobes during standard intracranial vascular surgery under general anesthesia; whether dynamic changes in CCEPs caused by reduced focal cerebral blood flow can be measured; and whether CCEPs can be used to monitor speech function, particularly associated with the left side

Migraine triggers and habituation of visual evoked potentials.

Background Identifying specific subsets of patients within the clinical spectrum of migraine could help in personalizing migraine treatment. Profiling patients by combining clinical characteristics and neurophysiological biomarkers is largely unexplored. We studied the association between migraine attack triggers and habituation of visual evoked potentials. Methods We personally interviewed 25 patients about their migraine triggers following a structured list, and measured the N1-P1 habituation slope over six blocks of 100 averaged pattern-reversal VEP afterwards. Results The mean number of tr

Visual Evoked Potentials in Primary Open Angle Glaucoma.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) assess the integrity of the visual pathways from the optic nerve to the occipital cortex. Optic disc cupping and visual field loss have been associated with prolongation of latency of VEP in primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). METHODS: Pattern reversal and flash VEP tests were done in consenting 20 primary open angle glaucoma eyes and 40 normal control eyes. RESULTS: In POAG cases, the refractive error [3.51 ± 1.88 versus 1.88 ± 1.11, D, p = 0.001], cup-disc ratio in percent [66.00 ± 16.98 versus 28.50 ± 5.80, p = 0.001], intraocular press

Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials and motion sickness medications.

OBJECTIVE: Seasickness is a widespread problem among naval crew, and has a major impact on their performance at sea. The three pharmacological agents most commonly employed in the treatment of seasickness are dimenhydrinate, cinnarizine, and scopolamine. At present, the effectiveness of anti-seasickness drugs is tested by a process of "trial and error", while sailing and exposed to sea conditions. A physiological test to evaluate the action of a drug might save crew members long periods of suffering, as well as simplifying the procedure of selecting the appropriate treatment for each individua

Vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials in central vestibular disorders.

Vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) are short latency manifestations of vestibulo-ocular and vestibulocollic reflexes that originate from the utricle and saccule. Although cervical and ocular VEMPs have mostly been applied to peripheral vestibular disorders, the characteristics and the diagnostic values of VEMPs have been expanded to assess the function of the central otolithic pathways. In the central nervous system, the cervical VEMPs (cVEMPs) are mediated by the vestibular nuclei and uncrossed medial vestibulospinal tract descending in the lower brainstem and spinal cord. In contr

Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials and habituation to seasickness.

OBJECTIVE: Seasickness may impose severe limitations on the performance of ships' crew. Cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMP) assess the function of the saccule, the organ responsible for monitoring vertical linear acceleration, which has been found to be the most provocative motion stimulus in the evolution of motion sickness. We used the cVEMP test in a prospective evaluation of susceptibility and habituation to seasickness. METHODS: Forty-six naval recruits underwent the cVEMP test before exposure to sea conditions. After 6 months' sailing experience, participants complete

Assessment of visual disability using visual evoked potentials.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to validate the use of visual evoked potential (VEP) to objectively quantify visual acuity in normal and amblyopic patients, and determine if it is possible to predict visual acuity in disability assessment to register visual pathway lesions. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted of patients diagnosed with normal vision, unilateral amblyopia, optic neuritis, and visual disability who visited the university medical center for registration from March 2007 to October 2009. The study included 20 normal subjects (20 right eyes: 10 females, 10

Motor evoked potentials in thoracoabdominal aortic surgery: CON.

Thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms (TAAAs) have a dismal natural history that frequently necessitates surgical repair, but such repairs sometimes result in paraplegia and paraparesis. To reduce the risk of these complications, intraoperative monitoring of spinal cord motor evoked potentials (MEPs) can be used to guide TAAA repair procedures and may potentially minimize spinal cord ischemia. However, the use of MEP monitoring techniques requires important changes to anesthetic management, entails certain risks, and has important contraindications.

Trigeminal somatosensory evoked potentials in trichloroethylene-exposed workers.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the value of trigeminal somatosensory evoked potentials (TSEP) in evaluating toxicity of trichloroethylene to the trigeminal nerve. METHODS: Trichloroethylene (TCE), an excellent fat solvent largely used in industry, has a neurotoxic effect particularly on the trigeminal nerve. In March 2002, several TCE-exposed workers presented to Habib Bourguiba University Hospital, Sfax, Tunisia, for burned or numbness of the face. Twenty-three workers manipulating TCE underwent clinical, biological and toxicological assessment. Neurophysiologic study consisted of the measurement of t

[Somatosensory evoked potentials/fields--exploration of brain function].

We have summarized the history of electroencephalography(EEG) since 1875, when a paper by Richard Caton was published describing the first EEG recordings in animals. Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were recorded by George Dawson in 1951. Thereafter, SEPs were developed for clinical use with other evoked potentials such as auditory evoked potentials(VEPs). To understand evoked potentials, related mechanism of induction of far-fields-potentials(FFP) following stimulation of the median nerve has been discussed. SEPs consisted of P9, N9, N10, P11, N11, N13, P13, P14, N18, N20 and P20/P22. S

Visual evoked potentials in children with occipital epilepsies.

The objectives of this study are to see if any visual evoked potential (VEP) differences are present in two forms of occipital epilepsy, childhood epilepsy with occipital paroxysms (CEOP) and symptomatic occipital epilepsy (SOE) with respect to etiology, as CEOP is a benign age- and localization-related idiopathic epilepsy while SOE is a symptomatic form. Nineteen patients with CEOP and 13 patients with SOE were included in the study and P100 potential latency and amplitude values obtained from these patients were compared with the values recorded from normal controls. The amplitude values rec

Normalisation of visual evoked potentials after optic neuritis.

Normalisation of the visual evoked potential (VEP) in patients with optic neuritis (ON) appears to be a rare phenomenon. However, although several workers have indicated that it can happen, they have not followed up with subsequent VEP tests to confirm how long the VEP latency of the affected eye remains in the normal range. To resolve this, 18 patients with a clinical diagnosis of acute unilateral ON were followed for 5 years with repeated VEP tests to determine if the latency of the P2 wave from affected eye could return to the normal range. Furthermore, in cases where the latency returned t

Pattern visual evoked potentials in traumatic optic neuropathy.

To evaluate the characteristics of pattern visual evoked potentials (PVEPs) in traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) compared with optic neuritis (ON), we retrospectively studied 47 patients with TON and 64 patients with unilateral ON. PVEPs elicited by the stimulation with 3 reversals/s were recorded in all patients. A PVEP could be recorded in 29.8% of the TON patients and 49.6% of the ON patients at their first visit. In the 14 patients with TON and recordable PVEPs, the mean amplitude ratio (affected/fellow eye) was 0.29 +/- 0.03 (SE) and the mean delay of the peak latency was 17.9 +/- 2.9 ms.

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) in tobacco smokers.

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were studied in 10 chronic male tobacco smokes (average age 26.55 years) with history of smoking 3 to 14 years to detect early subclinical impairments in auditory pathway. The values of BAEPs were compared with those of 28 age matched normal male non-smokers (control). The results revealed significant prolongation of latencies of wave I and III indicating that conductivity of sensory impulse along acoustic nerve and pons is affected in chronic smokers which may be attributed to adverse effect on myelination by nicotine and toluene present in tobacco
