INTRODUCTION: People with multiple sclerosis (MS) commonly experience balance, gait, and upper-limb impairments that require long-term physical therapy (PT). Home-based telerehabilitation can improve access to therapy, and game-enhanced interventions (serious games/exergaming) and gamification elements may enhance engagement and adherence.
METHODS: This scoping review examined the current evidence and explored the implementation considerations of gamification-based telerehabilitation (GBT) systems designed to deliver home-based PT for people with MS. Following PRISMA-ScR guidance, the databas

BACKGROUND: Learning disabilities are among the major cognitive impairments caused by aging. Among the interventions used to improve learning among older adults are serious games, which are participative electronic games designed for purposes other than entertainment. Although some systematic reviews have examined the effectiveness of serious games on learning, they are undermined by some limitations, such as focusing on older adults without cognitive impairments, focusing on particular types of serious games, and not considering the comparator type in the analysis.
OBJECTIVE: This review aim

BACKGROUND: The introduction of technology-assisted rehabilitation (TAR) uncovers promising challenges for the treatment of motor disorders, particularly if combined with exergaming. Patients with neurological diseases have proved to benefit from TAR, improving their performance in several activities. However, the subjective perception of the device has never been fully addressed, being a conditioning factor for its use. The aims of the study were: (a) to develop a questionnaire on patients' personal experience with TAR and exergames in a real-world clinical setting; (b) to administer the ques

Technological advances continually reduce the effort to digitally transform health-related activities such as rehabilitation and training. Exemplary systems use tracking and vital sign monitoring to assess physical condition and training progress. This paper presents a system for body stability training and coordination evaluation, using cost-efficient tracking and monitoring solutions. It implements the use case of app-guided back posture tracking on the ICAROS Pro training device via SteamVR Tracking 2.0, with pulse and respiration rate monitoring via Zephyr BioHarness 3.0. A longitudinal st

Embodied cognition research indicates that sensorimotor training can influence action concept processing. Yet, most studies employ isolated (pseudo)randomized stimuli and require repetitive single-effector responses, thus lacking ecological validity. Moreover, the neural signatures of these effects remain poorly understood. Here, we examined whether immersive bodily training can modulate behavioral and functional connectivity correlates of action-verb processing in naturalistic narratives. The study involved three phases. First, in the Pre-training phase, 32 healthy persons listened to an acti

With the increasing number of stroke cases worldwide, there is a growing demand for more and more effective rehabilitation methods. Having suffered a stroke is associated with significant functional and motor limitations, which directly translates into a decrease in quality of life. Over the past decades, researchers have become increasingly interested in the impact of therapies using multimedia tools, such as video games, virtual reality or robots that support the movements of specific body parts, on the effectiveness of rehabilitation and the patient's return to maximum fitness. One such too

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral stroke often results in significant motor deficits, including contralateral hemiparesis of the upper limb. Rehabilitation protocols with high-intensity and task-specific exercises can improve these deficits. Recent technological advancements in virtual reality (VR), myoelectric control, and exergames may be exploited to enhance rehabilitation effectiveness. However, novel rehabilitation approaches combining these novel methodologies have rarely been developed with the active involvement of both therapists and patients.
METHODS: An interdisciplinary team developed a nove

Stroke is a leading contributor to long-term disability worldwide, and rehabilitation often relies on costly devices, limited infrastructure, or labor-intensive protocols. While virtual reality-based exergames have gained popularity for promoting patient engagement, most rely on proprietary sensors or wearable electronics, limiting accessibility and clinical adaptability. This study presents the design, implementation, and pilot evaluation of a custom exergame that estimates the 3D elbow angle using a single RGB camera and two colored spheres as markers, eliminating the need for specialized ha
