Contemplative Practice and Responses to Mortality Salience: Evidence from Long-Term Sufi Meditators.

Mortality salience research has played a central role in understanding responses to death awareness and existential threat. At the same time, relatively little research has examined whether long-term contemplative practice may shape affective, cognitive, and implicit responses to mortality-related stimuli. The present study investigated these processes in long-term contemplative practitioners from a Sufi tradition in which reflection on death occupies a central role. Participants completed an implicit measure of self- versus other-oriented attitudes before and after a mortality salience induct

Suffering, justice, and scarcity: philosophical reflections on the burden of cancer in LMICS using Nigeria as a case study.

Cancer represents a significant and growing public health emergency in Nigeria, where high mortality rates, late-stage presentation, inadequate infrastructure, prohibitive costs and pervasive stigma combine to produce a multidimensional crisis. While epidemiological data and health system analysis illuminate the scale of the problem, they fail to capture the deeper ethical, structural and existential realities that shape the lived experience of cancer. This paper employs key philosophical concepts, including distributive justice, social justice, structural violence, biopolitics, epistemic inju

Is Fear of Childbirth Among Iranian Pregnant Women Related to Spiritual Health? A Cross-Sectional Survey.

Fear of childbirth (FOC) affects numerous pregnant women and can negatively impact both maternal and infant health outcomes. Addressing spiritual health is essential in clinical care, as it contributes to overall well-being and may help reduce stress, potentially alleviating FOC. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the relationship between fear of childbirth and spiritual health among 270 pregnant women. Data were collected using the Childbirth Attitude Questionnaire (CAQ) and the Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWBS). The participants, with a mean age of 31.02 ± 5.89 years, showed that

Creating critical palliative hypnotic adjustments: temporality, hope, and meaning.

When cure is not possible, suffering often takes form as pain and distressing symptoms, death anxiety, existential distress, and meaninglessness. This paper describes important elements connecting palliative care principles with hypnotic approaches designed to provide support, palliate symptoms, foster hope, and address existential and spiritual distress. We offer a developmental process for and examples of hypnotic suggestions customized to simultaneously ameliorate physical symptoms and address profound distress arising from physical, social, psychological, existential, and spiritual challen

Is suffering a sufficient legitimation for UTx?

Uterus transplantation is a relatively new intervention. A woman with absolute uterine factor infertility receives, by a surgical procedure, a transplanted uterus, most often by living donation. The uterus recipient may thus become pregnant and conceive her own child. As with any other medical treatment, UTx requires legitimation. The anticipated benefits must outweigh the risks of the medical intervention. The risks and benefits of UTx are by no means unequivocal and cannot be easily determined. The benefits depend on the final evaluation of the suffering to be alleviated by the intervention.

The treatment of childhood cancer: unveiling the experience of parents.

OBJECTIVE: to understand the experiences of parents of children and adolescents with cancer undergoing treatment. METHOD: qualitative research, based on Heidegger's existential phenomenology, in which 13 parents of eight patients under 19 years of age, assisted by a charity association, were interviewed. RESULTS: three topics resulted from the analysis: "Experiencing the unpleasantness of the treatment"; "Fearing the possibility of a frightening situation" and "Experiencing the carelessness of another person". It was showed that during and after the treatment, the parents experience the fear

The Climate Polycrisis and the Question of Whether We Are Alone: A Psychoanalytic Perspective.

This article argues that the question of whether we are alone in the universe is a symptom of Western apparatuses that produce an ontological rift between human beings and other species. This rift comprises instrumental, ruling epistemologies that depersonalize other species, thus legitimating our indifference to their manifold intelligences and communications. The Western apparatuses that produce the rift can be understood in terms of a normative and historical unconscious, as well as the defenses of weak dissociation and projection. These defenses operate to secure a conscious and preconscio

Suicide in the literary work of Cesare Pavese.

On the basis of an existential analysis (Daseinanalyse), the authors consider the suicide, at age 42, of Cesare Pavese, one of the most important Italian poets and writers of the post-World War II period. It is found that in his poems, his novels, and particularly his letters and diary the idea of suicide was present in his consciousness since adolescence; year by year it is possible to follow the development of his ideas and fantasies about suicide. Incapable of establishing authentic communication with others, Pavese narrowed his existential horizon to the point of being less and less capabl

[Personality and somatic disorders].

In the title of this text, by somatic disorders we mean those physical illnesses clearly related to a non-psychiatric medical field, frequently termed psychosomatic illnesses and somatoform disorders. For forty years, a trend of thought has focused with pertinence on the psychological peculiarities in patients with severe somatic diseases. Moreover, causality was often supposed in the regularly mentioned association between personality features and somatoform disorders. However, the revival of the study of the earlier field of relationships between mind and body by Briquet, Charcot, Janet and

Generative AI as interactional infrastructure for meaning-centered care in later life.

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) and large language models are rapidly entering mental health research and service delivery, yet their dominant use remains symptom-centric, emphasizing screening, classification, triage, and risk detection. For older adults, mental health is often inseparable from existential concerns: loss of social role, disrupted continuity of self, loneliness, diminished dignity, and questions of legacy. This perspective argues that GenAI should not be conceptualized as an autonomous substitute for clinicians, nurses, social workers, or family caregivers. Instead,

A phenomenological construct of caring among spouses following acute coronary syndrome.

The aim of this study was interpret the existential construct of family caring following Acute Coronary Syndrome. Family support is known to have a positive impact on recovery and adjustment after cardiac events. Few studies provide philosophically-based, interpretative explorations of carer experience following a spouse's ischaemic event. As carer experiences, behaviours and meaning-making may impact on the quality of the support they provide to patients, further understanding could improve both patient outcomes and family experience. Fourteen spouses of people experiencing Acute Coronary Syn

Exploring patient-reported barriers to participating in proton therapy clinical trials.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical trials lead the progress in healthcare. To ensure reliable research conclusions, it is essential to enroll diverse patient groups. Identifying and understanding patient-reported barriers to clinical trials may help enhance recruitment among diverse patient groups. The clinical potential of proton therapy (PT) to reduce late effects is being investigated in clinical trials worldwide. Thus, for some patients, PT is only accessible by participating in clinical trials.Individuals with smoking-related head and neck cancer (HNC) are sometimes socioeconomically deprived, leading

Life after the loss: protocol for a Danish longitudinal follow-up study unfolding life and grief after the death of a child during pregnancy from gestational week 14, during birth or in the first 4 weeks of life.

INTRODUCTION: After the death of a child during pregnancy, birth or in the neonatal period, parents often experience feelings of guilt, disenfranchisement, feelings of betrayal by one's own body and envy of others. Such bereavement results in high rates of distress: psychologically, emotionally, physiologically and existentially. These data are collected using a national, longitudinal cohort to assess grief in mothers and their partners after the death of a child during pregnancy, birth or in the neonatal period. Our aim is to achieve a general description of grief, emotional health, and exist

Does sharing good news buffer fear of bad news? A daily diary study of fear of cancer recurrence in couples approaching the first mammogram post-diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: The core of fear of cancer recurrence (FCR)-a top concern of couples after successful breast cancer (BC) treatment-is fear of death. Daily relationship processes may be instrumental in regulating FCR as triggers of existential distress are encountered. We tested the hypothesis that daily capitalization, the process of sharing good news (capitalization attempts) to a partner perceived as responsive (responsiveness), buffers patient and spouse FCR as they confront the first mammogram post-diagnosis. METHODS: Fifty-seven early-stage BC survivors and their spouses reported daily FCR, c

Validation of the English version of Self-competence in Death Work Scale among palliative care professionals: Interfacing between professional and personal orientations.

The original Chinese version of the Self-competence in Death Work Scale was developed to measure helping professionals' perceived competence to cope with emotional and existential challenges in working with death and bereavement. This study aimed to validate the English version of this scale. A survey was conducted and 199 palliative care professionals (PCP) in the UK completed an online questionnaire. Findings supported the scale's validity but indicated a new three-factor structure, "Professional Orientation," "Personal Orientation" and "Professional-Personal Interfacing Orientation," which

Evil, Constructed: A Salient Part of an Emerging Spiritual Veteran Identity.

This article investigated constructions of evil among deployed Swedish veterans. Six cases were used to demonstrate common themes of these constructions: humans are capable of everything; anyone can be violated, even killed; evil and cruelty comes in many forms; coldness/cynicism; exhausting to witness suffering and pain; and existential rumination. The impact of these can affect a veteran's identity and their notions of self. However, processing encounters with evil is seen, in some Christian perspectives, as an essential prerequisite for spiritual growth, and this might be potentially import

Authenticity as a pathway to neutral acceptance of death.

Neutral acceptance, the view that death is an integral part of life, is distinct from the mere absence of death anxiety, yet its psychological antecedents remain poorly understood. Drawing on an existential perspective, we propose that authenticity fosters neutral acceptance by alleviating existential guilt over a life not fully lived. Across three studies, we found converging evidence for this proposition. Study 1 (N = 489) documented a cross-sectional association between authenticity and neutral acceptance, controlling for demographic covariates. Using a two-wave longitudinal design, Study 2

Filicide as a part of extended suicide: An experience of psychotherapy with the survivor.

The tragedy of maternal filicide and extended suicides has occurred throughout history. Maternal filicide-suicide perpetrators most often suffer from depression, suicidality, or psychosis. Interventions in such cases are not commonly reported in the psychiatric settings, and the components of psychotherapeutic approach and its efficacy are also not known. Here we present a long-term therapy carried out with a 36-year-old married lady, with the complaints of low mood, suicidal ideation, severe guilt feelings, and depressive cognitions. There was positive family history of depression, past histo
