Photodegradation of expectorant drug ambroxol in seawater environment: Seasonal impact on a global scale.

The ocean is a globally important zone for the photochemical transformation of various organic contaminants. Its unique chemical composition, especially the high concentration of halide ions, can significantly alter the photochemical reactivity and fate of these contaminants. Herein, we systematically investigated the effects of marine constituents on the sunlight-driven photolysis of ambroxol (AMB), an expectorant drug extensively used following COVID-19 pandemic, and assessed its spatiotemporal persistence on a global scale. The results revealed that marine matrix significantly promoted AMB

Expectoration of Cryptosporidium Parasites in Sputum of Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Positive and -Negative Adults.

Respiratory cryptosporidiosis is thought to be a rare, end-stage complication of HIV. Few studies have systematically examined the frequency of such infection in adults. Sputum specimens submitted for tuberculosis (TB) testing at Mulago Hospital, Uganda, were anonymously retested for Cryptosporidium using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Visual confirmation using immunofluorescence confocal microscopy was performed for a subset of PCR-positive samples. Of 824 sputum samples tested, 24 (2.9%) were Cryptosporidium positive. Prevalence in sputum ranged between 0% and 10% in each month o

A rare case of pharyngeal perforation and expectoration of an entire anterior cervical fixation construct.

Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is a very common surgery performed globally. Although a few cases of expectorating screws or extrusion of screws into the gastrointestinal tract through esophageal perforations have previously been reported, there has not been a case reporting pharyngeal perforation and entire cervical construct extrusion in the literature to date. In this report the authors present the first case involving the extrusion of an entire cervical construct via a tear in the posterior pharyngeal wall. An 81-year-old woman presented to the emergency department (ED) with

Simultaneous determination of dextromethorphan, diphenhydramine and phenylephrine in expectorant and decongestant syrups by capillary electrophoresis.

The separation of basic nitrogenous compounds commonly used as active ingredients in cold medicine formulations by micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography and capillary zone electrophoresis with direct absorptiometric detection was investigated. The type and composition of the background electrolyte (BGE) were investigated with respect to separation selectivity and BGE stability. BGE of 10 mM sodium dihydrogenphosphate-sodium tetraborate buffer containing 10 mM SDS and 10% acetonitrile, pH 9.0 was found to be optimal. [Plastic bronchitis and mucoid impaction--uncommon disease syndromes with expectoration mucus plugs].

Mucoid impaction and plastic bronchitis are relatively rare disorders caused by the formation of obstructive airway plugs. We observed from February 1999 to June 2000 seven patients with mucoid impaction and one with plastic bronchitis. In the group of mucoid impaction there were 4 patients with bronchial asthma and 3 without history of lung disease. At the admission to hospital all patients suffered from cough, chest pain and effort dyspnea. Two of them expectorated during cough "bronchial casts". The chest X-ray of 5 patients revealed atelectasis of one of the lung's lobes and diffuse opacit

The effects of constituents of an antitussive and expectorant preparation on physical dependence potential and antitussive activity of dihydrocodeine (DC) were studied. Rats were treated with DC, methylephedrine (ME), chlorpheniramine (CP), and caffeine (CA) singly or simultaneously admixed with food (DC 0.125, ME: 0.25, CP: 0.05, CA: 0.25 mg /g of food) for 7 days. Subsequently, rats were treated with naloxone (0.5 mg/kg, sc) and withdrawal signs produced were observed. Naloxone-precipitated body weight loss in DC-treated rats was suppressed by simultaneous administration of the three drugs (

A method for studying expectorant action in the mouse by measurement of tracheobronchial phenol red secretion.

The paper reports a method for studying mucosecretolytic drugs in the mouse. After i.p. application of phenol red, part of the dye is secreted in the tracheobronchial tract and collected by lung washings with saline. The concentration of secreted phenol red is measured photometrically at 546 nm. All the most important expectorant drugs increase the tracheobronchial secretion of phenol red in the mouse. The ED50 values, calculated as mg/kg, show practically the same activity for N-acetylcysteine, Tiopronine, SF-1284 and S-carboxymethylcysteine, and a lower activity for Ambroxol and Sobrerol. Th

A new method for evaluating mucolytic expectorant activity and its application. I. Methodology.

A new method for evaluating in vivo effect of mucolytic expectorants was devised. In this report, however, the focus is placed on methodology but not on pharmacology. Rabbits with subacute bronchitis were prepared by long-term exposure to minute amounts of SO2 gas. The sputum was quantitatively collected from the animal through a tracheal cannula at suitable time intervals according to the Perry and Boyd's method. As a preliminary study, changes in volume, viscosity and amounts of freeze-dried substance of sputa were examined after intraduodenal administration of water instead of mucolytic exp

Adaptive control of airway pressure during the expectoration process in a cough assist system.

Existing Mechanical Insufflation-Exsufflation (MI-E) devices often overlook the impact of cough airflow pressure on mucus clearance, particularly lacking in control over airway pressure during the expiratory phase, which can lead to airway collapse and other types of airway damage. This study optimizes the design of cough assist system and explores the effectiveness of PID and adaptive control methods in regulating airway pressure. The adaptive control method compensates for hose pressure drop by online estimation of the ventilatory hose characteristics. It achieves precise tracking of target

Antitussive, Expectorant and Antipyretic Effect of the Ethanolic Extract of the Leaves of Momordica charantia L.

The traditional use of the M. charantia L. plant to treat coughs, fever and expectoration is widely practiced in different cultures, but its effectiveness and safety still require scientific investigation. This study sought to perform a chemical analysis and evaluate the antitussive, expectorant and antipyretic effects of the ethanolic extract of M. charantia leaves (EEMc) in rats and mice. The EEMc was subjected to chemical analysis by HPLC-DAD, revealing the presence of the flavonoids astragalin and isoquercetin. Acute oral toxicity in mice did not result in deaths, although changes in liver

On the nature of peculiar expectorated bronchial casts: Can infrared spectroscopy enlighten us?

BACKGROUND: Bronchial casts can be defined as gelatinous structures originating from the airways. While several cases of bronchial cast formation have been reported in literature, unravelling its nature is often a difficult task. METHODS: In this case report, we applied infrared (IR) spectroscopy on a bronchial cast fragment originating from a patient who suffered from a 2-y history of frequent coughing accompanied by the occasional expectoration of viscous and thick white-yellow bronchial-like structures. RESULTS: Based on a markedly high lipid to protein ratio and presence of long-chain fa
