A pair-matched longitudinal study conducted on three dairy farms in the U.S. High-Plains explored the temporal effects of two-dose ceftiofur crystalline-free acid (CCFA) treatment for metritis on third-generation cephalosporin (3GC) resistance among enteric E. coli in Holstein-Friesian cows. The current 13-day slaughter withholding period does not account for rising populations of third-generation cephalosporin (3GC) resistant bacteria in feces of animals following CCFA treatment. A total of 124 matched-pairs of cows were enrolled in the study. Cows diagnosed with postpartum metritis received

The emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli (E. coli) clonal lineages with high virulence potential is alarming. Lack of sufficient data on molecular epidemiology of such pathogens from countries with high infection burden, such as Bangladesh, hinders management and infection control measures. In this study, we assessed the population structure, virulence potential and antimicrobial susceptibility of clinical E. coli isolates from Dhaka, Bangladesh. A high prevalence of MDR (69%) and extended-spectrum β-lactamase production (ESBL) (51%) was found. Most E. coli isolates were sus

(1) Background: Antibiotic resistance in bacteria is an urgent global threat to public health. Migratory birds can acquire antibiotic-resistant and pathogenic bacteria from the environment or through contact with each other and spread them over long distances. The objectives of this study were to explore the relationship between migratory birds and the transmission of drug-resistant pathogenic Escherichia coli. (2) Methods: Faeces and swab samples from migratory birds were collected for isolating E. coli on the Inner Mongolia Plateau of northern China from 2018 to 2023. The resistant phenotype

ABSTRACT: Hospital-acquired infections caused by extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli are a global problem. Healthy people can carry ESBL-producing E. coli in the intestines; thus, E. coli from healthy people can potentially cause hospital-acquired infections. Therefore, the transmission routes of ESBL-producing E. coli from healthy persons should be determined. A foodborne outbreak of human norovirus (HuNoV) GII occurred at a restaurant in Shizuoka, Japan, in 2018. E. coli O25:H4 was isolated from some of the HuNoV-infected customers. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresi

Background: The increasing attention on extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli strains isolated from poultry flocks stems from concerns about their virulence potential and zoonotic risk. Of particular significance is the identification of extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC) pathotypes in poultry, as these strains pose not only animal health concerns but also serious threats to food safety and public health. Mapping the genetic background of pathogenicity and antimicrobial resistance is essential for risk assessment and the development of effective control str

OBJECTIVES: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) to critically important antimicrobials (CIAs) amongst Gram-negative bacteria can feasibly be transferred amongst wildlife, humans and domestic animals. This study investigated the ecology, epidemiology and origins of CIA-resistant Escherichia coli carried by Australian silver gulls (Chroicocephalus novaehollandiae), a gregarious avian wildlife species that is a common inhabitant of coastal areas with high levels of human contact.
METHODS: Sampling locations were widely dispersed around the perimeter of the Australian continent, with sites separated b

BACKGROUND: Sequence type 131 (ST131) is a predominant lineage among extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli. It plays a major role in the worldwide dissemination of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli. The ST131 pandemic is mainly the result of clonal expansion of the single well-adapted subclone H30-Rx, which is acquired in hospitals more frequently than other ESBL-producing E. coli clones.
AIM: To develop a rapid method using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) to identify ST131 for infection control purposes.

Extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) cause clinical infections in humans. Understanding the evolution and dissemination of ExPEC strains via potential reservoirs is important due to associated morbidity, health care costs and mortality. To further understanding this survey has examined isolates recovered from the faeces of 221 healthy dogs and 427 healthy cats. The distribution of phylogroups varied with host species, and depended on whether the animal was living in a shelter or a home. The human associated STs 69, 73, 95, 131 and 127 were prevalent, with 30.5% of cat isolates a

The pathogenic strains of Escherichia coli (E. coli) are frequent cause of urinary tract infections including catheter-associated, soft tissue infections and sepsis. The growing antibiotic resistance in E. coli is a major health concern. Bacteriophages are specific for their bacterial host, thus providing a novel and effective alternatives. This study focuses on isolation of bacteriophages from urban sewage treatment plants. Initially 50 different bacteriophages have been isolated against non-resistant reference E. coli strain and fifty multidrug resistant clinical isolates of extraintestinal

BACKGROUND: Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) is a major threat because it can infect both domesticated and wild birds. Studies on the frequency of APEC in wild and migratory birds are scarce, especially compared with data on other bird species. The significance of the pigeon as a significant vector and reservoir of APEC transmission to other bird species was particularly neglected.
AIM: This investigation was conducted with the express goal of examining whether or not the pigeon's extraintestinal tissues contained multidrug-resistant APEC.
METHODS: Tissue specimens were collected fro

The relevance of vaginal colonization of pregnant women by Escherichia coli is poorly understood, despite these strains sharing a similar virulence profile with other extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli producing severe obstetric and neonatal infections. We characterized the epidemiology, antimicrobial susceptibility and virulence profiles of 84 vaginal E. coli isolates from pregnant women from Rabat (Morocco) and Manhiça (Mozambique), two very distinct epidemiological settings. Low levels of antimicrobial resistance were observed to all drugs tested, except for trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole in

The increased serum survival gene iss has long been recognized for its role in extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) virulence. iss has been identified as a distinguishing trait of avian ExPEC but not of human ExPEC. This gene has been localized to large virulence plasmids and shares strong similarities with the bor gene from bacteriophage lambda. Here, we demonstrate that three alleles of iss occur among E. coli isolates that appear to have evolved from a common lambda bor precursor. In addition to the occurrence of iss on the ColV/BM virulence plasmids, at least two iss alleles

Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) is the main cause of urinary tract infections (UTIs) and carries virulence and resistance factors often found in mobilizable genetic elements, such as plasmids or pathogenicity islands (PAIs). UPEC is part of the extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC), but hybrid strains possessing both diarrheagenic E. coli (DEC) and ExPEC traits, termed "hypervirulent", present a significant health threat. This study assessed the prevalence of UPEC PAIs, ExPEC sequence types (ST), DEC genes, carbapenemase and extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) phenotypes, resistanc

Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) is an important member of extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC). It shares similar pathogenic strategies with neonatal meningitis E. coli (NMEC) and may threaten human health due to its potential zoonosis. RyhB is a small non-coding RNA that regulates iron homeostasis in E. coli. However, it is unclear whether RyhB regulates meningitis occurrence. To investigate the function of RyhB in the development of meningitis, we constructed the deletion mutant APEC XM∆ryhB and the complemented mutant APEC XM∆ryhB/pryhB, established a mouse meningiti

BACKGROUND: Chickens are considered potential reservoirs for human extraintestinal infections with pathogenic Escherichia coli. However, information about genetic relatedness between E. coli from healthy chickens and human patients is still limited.
METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, clinical samples from patients with extraintestinal infections and healthy broiler chickens were collected from geographically related locations in Egypt during the 2nd half of 2015. The recovered isolates were tested for susceptibility against β-lactam antimicrobials and screened for the presence of extended-sp

Oral infection with enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) may cause severe enteritis, followed in up to 10% of cases by an extraintestinal complication, the hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). HUS is characterized by a triad of symptoms: anemia, thrombocytopenia, and acute renalfailure due to thrombotic microangiopathy. EHEC produces several virulence factors, among which a family of phage-encoded cytotoxins, called Shiga toxin 1 and Shiga toxin 2, seems to be most important. However, since an appropriate animal model is not available, pathogenicity of these emerging enteric pathogens is stil

BACKGROUND: Extraintestinal bacterial infections (EBIs), e.g., urinary tract infection, bacteremia, and meningitis, occur in approximately 10% of febrile infants younger than 60 days. Although many EBI-causing species commonly reside in the infant gut, proof that the digestive system is a pre-infection habitat remains unestablished.
RESULTS: We studied a cohort of febrile term infants < 60 days old who presented to one of thirteen US emergency departments in the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network from 2016 to 2019. Forty EBI cases and 74 febrile controls matched for age, sex, a

There is an increasing number of reports worldwide about multidrug resistance (MDR) with potential of ExPEC in commensal E. coli. The present study evaluated the potential ExPEC in selected 44 MDR E.coli isolates, collected from livestock. ExPEC isolates were characterized by analysis of five main groups of virulence genes (papA and/or papC, sfa and/or foc, afa and/or dra, kpsMT II and iutA). We also determined the increased virulence potential analyzing other 29 virulence genes, the epidemiology of these isolates. Additionally, fifteen ExPEC isolates were selected to evaluate the adhesion and

Four prostatitis syndromes are recognized clinically: acute bacterial prostatitis, chronic bacterial prostatitis, chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome, and asymptomatic prostatitis. Because Escherichia coli represents the most common cause of bacterial prostatitis, we investigated the importance of bacterial virulence factors and antimicrobial resistance in E. coli strains causing prostatitis and the potential association of these characteristics with clinical outcomes. A structured literature review revealed that we have limited understanding of the virulence-associated characteri

Novel approaches to combating antibiotic resistance are needed given the ever-continuing rise of antibiotic resistance and the scarce discovery of new antibiotics. Little is known about the colonization dynamics and the role of intrinsic plant-food characteristics in this process. We sought to determine whether plant fiber could alter colonization dynamics by antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the gut. We determined that ingestion of antibiotics in mice markedly enhanced gut colonization by a pathogenic extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli strain of human origin, E. coli J
