Cryogenic Viscoelasticity of a C22-Tailed Amine Oxide across an Extremely Broad pH Range.

Sustaining viscoelasticity of surfactant solutions at subzero temperatures and across extreme pH regimes remains challenging, as freezing and harsh acidic or alkaline environments inhibit aggregate growth and retard structural relaxation. This study examines microstructural evolution and rheological response of C22-tailed amine oxide (C22AO) in a 50/50 (v/v) ethylene glycol-water mixture spanning pH 2.0-13.0 and 20 °C to -20 °C. Potentiometric titration identifies an apparent pKa at 6.8, with ζ-potential declining from +18.53 mV (pH 2.0) to +2.35 mV (pH 6.8) and -1.66 mV (pH 13.0). All formula

Effects of simulated microgravity on biological features and virulence of the fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans.

Cryptococcus neoformans is a fungal pathogen that causes cryptococcal meningitis, mainly in immunocompromised individuals, such as those with HIV. Its recent detection on the International Space Station raises concerns about potential health risks in space, where immune systems may be compromised. However, its behavior in space-like conditions remains unclear. In this study, we examined the effects of simulated microgravity on C. neoformans. We found that the condition enhanced the fungus's resistance to membrane and osmotic stress and increased key virulence factors, including capsule formati

Brain morphometry and chronic inflammation in Bangladeshi children growing up in extreme poverty.

Over three hundred million children live in environments of extreme poverty, and the biological and psychosocial hazards endemic to these environments often expose these children to infection, disease, and inflammatory responses. Chronic inflammation in early childhood has been associated with diminished cognitive outcomes, and despite this established relationship, the mechanisms explaining how inflammation affects brain development are not well known. Importantly, the prevalence of chronic inflammation in areas of extreme poverty raises the possibility that it may also serve as a mechanism e

Durable Superelliptical Topological Superhydrophobic Surfaces With Tolerance to Extreme Conditions for High-Performance Anti-Icing.

Superhydrophobic surfaces (SHSs) show great promise for anti-icing by repelling supercooled water, delaying ice nucleation, and reducing ice adhesion, yet their practical applications are limited by poor durability under extreme conditions. Here, we present a multiscale stiff-soft integrated strategy that combines superelliptical topological (SET) microstructures with an intrinsically superhydrophobic nanocomposites to create superelliptical topological SHSs (SET-SHSs) with exceptional robustness and stable water repellency. SET-SHSs are capable of withstanding severe extreme conditions, inclu

Harnessing harshness: Leveraging extreme space conditions for self-healing polymer materials.

Polymeric materials are extensively used in space stations, satellites, and spacecraft due to their lightweight, versatility, and multifunctionality. Extending their service lifetime is essential for prolonging spacecraft operation, reducing space debris, and lowering the cost of space maintenance. However, the space environment is exceptionally harsh for carbon-based polymers, where micrometeoroid and orbital debris impacts, atomic oxygen erosion, high-energy radiation, and extreme temperature cycling lead to rapid degradation, while in-orbit repair remains highly challenging. Self-healing po

Physiological and behavioral responses to extreme cold-water diving and thermal stress: recommendations for the polar diver.

As access and exploration of polar regions has expanded in the past two decades due to greater interest and technology, more recreational scuba divers are exploring these more remote cold-water locations. Polar, or extreme cold-water, diving is a more physically demanding form of scuba diving, and divers need to better understand the effect of near-freezing water temperatures on human physiology. Changes in both physiological and behavioral functions may occur quickly in these types of environments and present the scuba diver with a potentially more challenging and dangerous environment. Adaptations of Xenograpsus testudinatus to shallow hydrothermal vent environments in the western Pacific: A comprehensive review.

The grapsoid crab Xenograpsus testudinatus, Ng et al. (2000) inhabits unique ecosystems of active shallow-water hydrothermal vents of the western Pacific volcanic rises as the dominant vent metazoan. This species provides a valuable model to explore population expansion, evolutionary ecology, metabolic regulation, genetic adaptation, and meta-population dynamics. A comprehensive literature review revealed that X. testudinatus, a dominant vent metazoan, has evolved robust metabolic strategies driven by mechanisms of acid-base regulation, allowing it to preserve its eco-physiological balance und

Adaptation to Low Temperature Exposure Increases Metabolic Rates Independently of Growth Rates.

Metabolic cold adaptation is a pattern where ectotherms from cold, high-latitude, or -altitude habitats have higher metabolic rates than ectotherms from warmer habitats. When found, metabolic cold adaptation is often attributed to countergradient selection, wherein short, cool growing seasons select for a compensatory increase in growth rates and development times of ectotherms. Yet, ectotherms in high-latitude and -altitude environments face many challenges in addition to thermal and time constraints on lifecycles. In addition to short, cool growing seasons, high-latitude and - altitude envir

The Role of Lung Ultrasound in Low-Resource Settings During the Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) Pandemic.

Lung ultrasound (LUS) has proven to be a helpful diagnostic tool for evaluating lung involvement in respiratory pathologies. The usage of this imaging technique became even more widespread during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The latest generation ultrasound scanners are conveniently portable and this permits ultrasound examinations to be performed even in extreme environments where no other diagnostic tool is available. Our team has developed the first guide that assists the clinician while operating in low-resource settings, in managing a SARS-CoV-2 patient based on the clinical examination and t

Heat stroke: a review.

Heat stroke is a complex clinical picture caused by extreme elevation of body temperature and is especially prevalent in hot climates. The danger of heat stroke has apparently always accompanied unacclimatized man on his way through arid zones, and was often the cause of man's fatal adventures in the desert. Large numbers of unacclimatized urban dwellers have suffered when the urban areas have been involved in heat waves. Heat stroke has also been a major problem in hot industrial environments. This paper is a review of pertinent literature on this subject.

Impact of simulated microgravity on the growth and proteomic profile of Enterobacter cloacae.

Previous studies have shown decreased microbial diversity in astronaut gut microbiomes during spaceflight, raising potential health concerns. Enterobacter cloacae, a commensal member of the human gastrointestinal tract microbiota, has the potential to cause opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients. However, little is known about how E. cloacae cells adapt to extreme environments such as microgravity, and whether this bacterium is of medical concern for astronauts during long-term spaceflight missions, as astronaut immune systems are compromised by microgravity. To this end, E. cl

Environmental Exposures and Stroke Risk: Converging Pathways, Unequal Burdens, and Prevention Opportunities.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To synthesize recent evidence on how environmental exposures influence stroke risk, with emphasis on air pollution, thermal stress, circadian and occupational disruption, built and social environments, and selected toxicants. RECENT FINDINGS: Long-term and episodic air pollution, especially fine particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm (PM₂.₅) and wildfire smoke, remain most consistently associated with stroke risk. Extreme heat combined with heat-humidity metrics is emerging as an important acute stroke trigger. Noise, artificial light at night, shift work, an

Dynamic system reliability under external shocks and internal markovian degradation.

Systems operating in harsh environments face the dual challenge of external extreme shocks and internal degradation, a critical failure mode often overlooked in reliability engineering. This paper develops a novel [Formula: see text]-transform model to analyze this coupled effect dynamically. Applied to a Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (DFIG), the model reveals a severe decline in performance: availability and reliability deteriorate asymptotically toward zero due to these combined stressors, with reliability falling more sharply due to the irreversibility of failures. To address this, a new m

The isomer distribution of C6H6 products from the propargyl radical gas-phase recombination investigated by threshold-photoelectron spectroscopy.

The resonance-stabilization of the propargyl radical (C3H3) makes it among the most important reactive intermediates in extreme environments and grants it a long enough lifetime to recombine in both terrestrial combustion media and cold molecular clouds in space. This makes the propargyl self-reaction a pivotal step in the formation of benzene, the first aromatic ring, to eventually lead to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in a variety of environments. In this work, by producing propargyl radicals in a flow tube where propyne reacted with F atoms and probing the reaction products by mass-selec

Proteomic and clinical biomarkers for acute mountain sickness in a longitudinal cohort.

Ascending to high-altitude by non-high-altitude natives is a well-suited model for studying acclimatization to extreme environments. Acute mountain sickness (AMS) is frequently experienced by visitors. The diagnosis of AMS mainly depends on a self-questionnaire, revealing the need for reliable biomarkers for AMS. Here, we profiled 22 AMS symptom phenotypes, 65 clinical indexes, and plasma proteomic profiles of AMS via a combination of proximity extension assay and multiple reaction monitoring of a longitudinal cohort of 53 individuals. We quantified 1069 proteins and validated 102 proteins. Vi

Impact of milk fish farming in the tropics on potentially pathogenic vibrios.

Ratios of sucrose-negative to sucrose-positive vibrios on TCBS agar (suc-/suc+) indicate the abundance of potential human pathogenic non-cholera vibrios in coastal mariculture environments of the Lingayen Gulf (Philippines. In guts of adult maricultured milkfish (Chanos chanos) of suc- vibrios reached extreme peak values ranging between 2 and 545 million per g wet weight. Suc- vibrios outnumbered suc+ vibrios in anoxic sediments, too, and were rarely predominant in coastal waters or in oxidized sediments. Suc-/suc+ ratios in sediments increased toward the mariculture areas with distance from t

A wide array of extreme halophilic enzymes derived from solar salterns of Bejaia in the north of Algeria: a focus on amylases from Haloarcula sp. strain ICHS1, Natrinema altunense strain MS1 and Haloferax gibbonsii strain MS2.

The biodiversity of extreme halophilic enzymes produced in three different solar salterns in the Bejaia region of northern Algeria was investigated, with a focus on the characterization of amylases. Generally, 101-103 CFU/g (ml) of extreme halophiles have been detected. 126 extreme halophilic microorganisms have been isolated. The isolates were found to produce several enzymes: amylase, esterase, gelatinase, laccase, lipase, caseinase, and cellulase. Four amylase-producing strains were identified as Haloarcula sp. strain ICHS1, Natrinema altunense strain MS1, Haloferax gibbonsii strain MS2, an

Evenness, biodiversity, and ecosystem function of intertidal communities along the Italian coasts: Experimental short-term response to ambient and extreme air temperatures.

Biodiversity can promote ecosystem functioning in both terrestrial and marine environments, emphasizing the necessity of biodiversity conservation in order to preserve critical ecosystem functions and associated services. However, the role of biodiversity in buffering ecosystem functioning under extreme events caused by climate change remains a major scientific issue, especially for intertidal systems experiencing stressors from both terrestrial and marine drivers. We performed a regional-scale field experiment along the Italian coast to investigate the response of unmanipulated intertidal com

The oral cavity of chronically homeless adults is home for unusual extremophile environmental bacteria.

Chronically homeless adults (CHA) face limited healthcare access, frequent substance use, contact with animals that significantly alter their oral microenvironment. This study aimed to characterize the oral microbiota in this understudied population. We analyzed saliva from CHA and asymptomatic men with no history of homelessness in Mexico City. V1-V3 regions of the 16S rRNA gene were sequenced in extracted DNA. Taxonomic classification was performed using human and non-human databases. Diversity metrics were calculated, and informative species identified through machine learning. Microbial co
