[Endogenous endophthalmitis in severe generalized diseases].

BACKGROUND: In spite of modern antibacterial, antimycotic and operative therapies, endogenous endophthalmitis connected with other severe diseases and an impaired state of health is an eye complication with a very poor prognosis. PATIENTS: The study presents observations about the progress of the endogenous endophthalmitis in five eyes of four patients. The age of the patients ranged from 58 to 71 years. The span between the appearance of the first eye symptoms and hospital treatment amounted to 1 week and 3 months. The general diseases have been diagnosed as endometrium cancer, colon cancer,

Electrical burn of the eye and orbit with severe delayed sequelae from an arc welding accident.

A 28-year-old male presented to the emergency room suffering an ocular burn injury from a welding rod. Given the mechanism of injury, severe delayed injury of the ocular adnexa occurred, requiring enucleation, partial exenteration of the superior orbit, and extensive reconstruction. Histopathology of the affected tissue was analyzed. This is the first report that details the clinical course of a patient with delayed high amperage and low voltage electrical burn injury.

Management of the anophthalmic socket in pediatric patients.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The management of the pediatric anophthalmic socket is distinguished from adult anophthalmia, because normal socket and facial development is dependent on orbital growth. Recent literature on managing anophthalmic sockets is discussed with a focus on the pediatric patient. RECENT FINDINGS: There are many studies discussing the management of the anophthalmic socket, but few are randomized clinical studies. Although the management of anophthalmia in the child is fraught with challenges and nuances, the principal aim is to encourage socket growth. SUMMARY: Both congenital and

Culture-positive unilateral panophthalmitis in a serology-positive case of dengue hemorrhagic fever.

Dengue fever, a mosquito-borne disease commonly found in the tropics, is one of the most prevalent forms of Flavivirus infection in humans. Symptomatically, it is characterized by fever, arthralgia, headache, and rash. Ophthalmic manifestations can involve both the anterior and posterior segment. Panophthalmitis is rare in dengue hemorrhagic fever, and there is no report of culture-positive panophthalmitis in this setting. Here, we report a case of a serology-positive 33-year-old male patient of dengue hemorrhagic fever who developed sudden onset pain, redness, and proptosis in the right eye.

Reconstructive keratoplasty in the management of conditions leading to corneal destruction.

Progressive corneal destruction of varying causes can result in pathologic changes that are incompatible with globe survival. Reconstructive keratoplasty and scleroplasty, in combination with other procedures, can be attempted as an alternative to enucleation, evisceration or spontaneous phthisis bulbi. The results of 50 reconstructive keratoplasties in 36 patients with severe corneal destruction are presented with one- to twenty-two year follow-up. Ninety-nine percent of the eyes were salvaged, 69% have clear grafts, 86% are visually improved and 51% achieved acuity of 20/100 or better.

Evisceration and ocular prosthetic implantation following endovascular coiling for the management of endophthalmitis in a long-standing post-traumatic unilateral carotid-cavernous fistula: A case report and review of the literature.

Carotid-cavernous fistula (CCF) is a rare condition involving an abnormal communication between the carotid artery and the cavernous sinus. We present a unique case of posttraumatic unilateral CCF initially misdiagnosed as a corneal melt with iris prolapse and orbital cellulitis. The patient, a 25-year-old male, experienced swelling, bleeding, and sudden vision loss in the affected eye following a fall. Imaging confirmed a direct CCF, and the patient underwent endovascular coiling, evisceration, and prosthetic replacement. Partial loss of levator palpebrae superioris muscle function was observ

Indications for Pediatric Ocular Prosthesis Fitting at a Referral Center in the Middle East.

Trauma is the major reason for globe loss in adults; however, there are less data regarding the causes for globe loss in children. We reviewed the underlying diagnoses of children who underwent ocular prosthesis fitting over a 1-year period at a referral eye hospital in the Middle East and found retinoblastoma, trauma, and congenital microphthalmia or anophthalmia to be the most common diagnoses, respectively. Enucleation and evisceration were the most common procedures and were exclusively performed for retinoblastoma and trauma, respectively. Ocular morbidity from the most common diagnoses r
