Non-traumatic acquisition of herpes simplex virus infection through the eye.

Primary ocular herpes is usually seen as a follicular conjunctivitis and blepharitis, with or without involvement of the cornea. It is unknown, however, to what extent asymptomatic and/or subclinical primary disease occurs, and whether primary ocular herpes follows direct droplet spread to the eye. Previous models of murine ocular herpes have used trauma (scarification) to introduce virus into the cornea, producing disease which results in significant corneal scarring. To mimic a likely route of infection in humans, a droplet containing virus was placed on the mouse eye and clinical disease re

Immunopathology of ascarid infection of the eye. Role of IgE antibodies and mast cells.

The roles of IgE antiascarid antibodies and mast cells were compared in passively sensitized guinea pigs and animals infected intravitreally with ascarid larvae (Toxocara canis, Ascaris suum). Intravenous IgE antibody disappeared from the serum within 48 hours, but induced a hypersensitive state that persisted for 28 days. In systemically immunized animals, the aqueous-serum IgE antibody ratio was 1:1,000 or less. Passive periocular anaphylactic reactions produced an infiltration of neutrophils and eosinophils, degranulation of mast cells, and vascular leakage in periocular and episcleral tiss

Understanding Acanthamoeba Keratitis: An In-Depth Review of a Sight-Threatening Eye Infection.

Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) is a rare but potentially sight-threatening corneal infection caused by the Acanthamoeba parasite. This microorganism is found ubiquitously in the environment, often in freshwater, soil, and other sources of moisture. Despite its low incidence, AK presents significant challenges due to delayed diagnosis and the complex nature of therapeutic management. Early recognition is crucial to prevent severe ocular complications, including corneal ulceration and vision loss. Diagnostic modalities and treatment strategies may vary greatly depending on the clinical manifestatio

In the eye of the storm: SARS-CoV-2 infection and replication at the ocular surface?

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) first emerged in December 2019 and spread quickly causing the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Recent single cell RNA-Seq analyses have shown the presence of SARS-CoV-2 entry factors in the human corneal, limbal, and conjunctival superficial epithelium, leading to suggestions that the human ocular surface may serve as an additional entry gateway and infection hub for SARS-CoV-2. In this article, we review the ocular clinical presentations of COVID-19 and the features of the ocular surface that may underline the overall l

Antioxidant defense in the eyes of immunocompetent and immunosuppressed mice infected with Acanthamoeba spp.

BACKGROUND: Acanthamoeba spp. are ubiquitous pathogens which cause granulomatous amoebic encephalitis and disseminated infection. Moreover, Acanthamoeba spp. infection of the cornea leads to Acanthamoeba keratitis. Our previous study showed that the infection of an eyeball may also take place via the migration of trophozoites through the optic nerve from the brain to the eyes. The aim of the study was to analyze the activity of enzymatic antioxidants and the concentration of non-enzymatic antioxidant in the eyes of immunocompetent and immunocompromised mice with disseminated acanthamoebiasis.

The incidence of eye lesions and visual impairment in onchocerciasis in relationship to the intensity of infection.

Data from follow-up surveys of onchocerciasis, conducted in the rain-forest and savanna areas of the United Cameroon Republic, are used to fit equations relating the incidence of eye lesions and visual impairment to microfilaria concentration in skin-snips. The incidence of lesions in those aged under 45 appears to be directly proportional to concentration, though the association is less clear in females over 25 in the savanna. The incidence of visual impairment appears also to be directly proportional to concentration among those under 45, but only in the savanna. Predictions of changes in in

Rate and various aspects of eye infection resulting from congenital rubella.

A study on the eyes of 39 embryos, which were removed from women who had contracted clinical or subclinical rubella during the first and beginning of the second trimester of gestation is presented. A virological and histological study was performed on the eyes. In four cases rubella virus was isolated from the eye tissues (10.3%) and in nine cases, histological evidence of rubella cataract was found (27.3%). These results suggest that the rubella infection, even in cases of subclinical infections in pregnant women in the first trimester, are highly dangerous (in our study--37.6%) to the eye of

[Role of chronic toxoplasmosis infection in pathology of the nervous system and eyes in adults].

The authors conducted a statistical correlation of frequencies of neurological and ophthalmological pathology in a group of patients with different disorders of the nervous system, where 556 had positive and 788 negative seroallergical reactions to toxoplasmosis. It was possible to establish that most of the neurological and ophthalmological symptoms of toxoplasmosis were significantly more frequent in individuals of the first group, except patients with disseminated sclerosis, myopathy and myasthenia.

A case of keratoconjunctivitis due to Ewingella americana and a review of unusual organisms causing external eye infections.

We report the isolation of Ewingella americana from the conjunctivae of a 38 year old female physician with keratoconjunctivitis associated with the use of soft contact lens. The patient was treated successfully with topical ciprofloxacin. The source of the infection remains unknown. All contact lens cleaning materials used by the patient were sterile. Since the patient was a physician, and this organism has been recorded as a cause of nosocomial infections, we checked whether cases of Ewingella americana had been reported, but none were identified. We have identified 39 bacterial species, 27

A case report of Mycobacterium chelonae keratitis and a review of mycobacterial infections of the eye and orbit.

Mycobacteria are unusual causes of keratitis and other ocular infections but the outcome of infection is often serious. We report a case of keratitis due to Mycobacterium chelonae, a rapidly growing environmental mycobacterium, in a soft contact-lens wearer, and discuss the difficulty and delay in identifying the organism, twice erroneously identified as Nocardia asteroides on morphological grounds. Despite in vitro susceptibility, the response to anti-bacterial agents was negligible and a second keratoplasty was required after a recurrence of disease at the donor-host junction. We review the

Trifluridine: a review of its antiviral activity and therapeutic use in the topical treatment of viral eye infections.

Trifluridine (trifluorothymidine) is an antiviral agent for topical use in the eye, and is structurally related to idoxuridine. In vitro studies have shown that it effectively inhibits the replication of herpes simplex virus type 1, which causes primary keratoconjunctivitis and recurrent epithelial keratitis in man. In masked comparative studies, predominantly in patients with dendritic ulcers, trifluridine 1% solution was effective in over 90% of patients; in such studies it was comparable with vidarabine in treating dendritic ulcers, and was at least as effective as, and in some studies more

Beyond the clinical eye: mapping intestinal parasitic infections and its risk factors among dogs and cats across Portugal.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal parasitic infections in dogs and cats represent a significant clinical challenge and pose relevant zoonotic risks to public health. Epidemiological data on Portuguese companion animals remain scarce, with limited sample sizes and geographic coverage, leaving key gaps in understanding parasite prevalence and associated risk factors. METHODS: This cross-sectional epidemiological study investigated the prevalence and associated risk factors of intestinal parasitism in 363 dogs and 345 cats, sampled from companion, breeding, shelter, and stray populations between November 2

School Nurses on the Front Lines of Healthcare: Getting aHEAD of EmergENT Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat Infections.

School nurses may deal with various common infectious eye, ear, nose, and throat-related chief complaints in regular practice. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of severe infection is paramount to preventing life-threatening complications that can have both acute and long-term implications. Distinguishing urgent and emergent eye, ear, nose, and throat conditions to send to the emergency department is integral to reducing the morbidity associated with these conditions. This article discusses three different students presenting with various chief complaints, from the initial assessment by the s

Etiology and epidemiological analysis of glaucoma-filtering bleb infections in a tertiary eye care hospital in South India.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the microbial etiology and associated risk factors among patients with blebitis following trabeculectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all culture-proven blebitis was performed in patients who underwent trabeculectomy between January 2004 and December 2008. A standardized form was filled out for each patient, documenting sociodemographic features and information pertaining to risk factors. Swabbing of the infected bleb surface was performed for all suspected cases and further subjected to microbiological analysis. RESULTS: A total of 23 patients wit

Evaluation of sampling technique and transport media for the diagnostics of adenoviral eye infections. Adenovirus sampling and transport.

BACKGROUND: Human adenoviruses (HAdV) may cause pharyngoconjunctival fever, follicular conjunctivitis or epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC). Especially, outbreaks of the latter may lead to severe economic losses when preventive measures are implemented too late. Thus, a safe sampling method, proper specimen transport conditions and a fast and sensitive diagnostic technique is mandatory. METHODS: Two commercially available virus transport systems (VTS) were compared with two NaCl-moisturised sampling devices, one of which comprises Dacron-tipped plastic-shafted swabs and the other a cotton-ti
