Rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder and rapid eye movement sleep without atonia in narcolepsy.

Narcolepsy is a rare disabling hypersomnia disorder that may include cataplexy, sleep paralysis, hypnagogic hallucinations, and sleep-onset rapid eye movement (REM) periods, but also disrupted nighttime sleep by nocturnal awakenings, and REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD). RBD is characterized by dream-enacting behavior and impaired motor inhibition during REM sleep (REM sleep without atonia, RSWA). RBD is commonly associated with neurodegenerative disorders including Parkinsonisms, but is also reported in narcolepsy in up to 60% of patients. RBD in patients with narcolepsy is, however, a disti

Preserved contextual modulation of eye movements in psychosis prone individuals.

The framework of predictive processing conceives perception as the integration of prior predictions and sensory data. An important source of priors is contextual information, including semantic context (i.e., the meaningful relationships between objects) and temporal context (i.e., the information provided by recent perceptual experiences). Alterations in the integration of priors and sensory data have been proposed to underlie psychotic experiences. Here, we examined the effects of semantic and temporal contextual information on eye movements in healthy individuals with low and high psychosis

Eye movements reflect thought patterns while listening to literary narratives.

While listening toan audiobook, listeners' attention may shift between the text and self-generated thoughts occurring during mind-wandering. Despite the growing use of audiobooks, little is known about how listeners process text when listening to it. The present study investigated the types of thought patterns that listeners have while listening to an audiobook, and whether and how these are reflected in eye movements. Participants (NStudy1 = 63, NStudy2 = 58) listened to an audio recording of a novel and responded to a 13-item mind-wandering questionnaire and a simple memory question 30 times

Analysis of Eye Movements in Adults with Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

Background and Objectives: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a progressive, autosomal recessive, rare neuromuscular disorder caused by a genetic defect in the SMN1 gene, where the SMN2 gene cannot sufficiently compensate. Patients experience progressive and predominantly proximal muscular weakness and atrophy. Oculomotor disorders are currently not regarded as a typical feature of SMA. The aim of this study was to determine whether oculomotor abnormalities are present in subjects with SMA and to assess a potential relationship between the oculomotor parameters and disease duration. Materials an

The engagement of cortical areas preceding exogenous vergence eye movements.

Source analyses on event related potentials (ERPs) derived from the electroencephalogram (EEG) were performed to examine the respective roles of cortical areas preceding exogenously triggered saccades, combined convergences, and combined divergences. All eye movements were triggered by the offset of a central fixation light emitting diode (LED) and the onset of a lateral LED at various depths in an otherwise fully darkened room. Our analyses revealed that three source pairs, two located in the frontal lobe-the frontal eye fields (FEF) and an anterior frontal area-, and one located within the o

An fMRI study of training voluntary smooth circular eye movements.

Despite a large number of recent studies, the promise of fMRI methods to produce valuable insights into motor skill learning has been restricted to sequence learning paradigms, or manual training paradigms where a relatively advanced capacity for sensory-motor integration and effector coordination already exists. We therefore obtained fMRIs from 16 healthy adults trained in a new paradigm that demanded voluntary smooth circular eye movements without a moving target. This aimed to monitor neural activation during two possible motor learning processes: (a) the smooth pursuit control system devel

Eye Movements and Articulations During a Letter Naming Speed Task.

Naming speed (NS) refers to how quickly and accurately participants name a set of familiar stimuli (e.g., letters). NS is an established predictor of reading ability, but controversy remains over why it is related to reading. We used three techniques (stimulus manipulations to emphasize phonological and/or visual aspects, decomposition of NS times into pause and articulation components, and analysis of eye movements during task performance) with three groups of participants (children with dyslexia, ages 9-10; chronological-age [CA] controls, ages 9-10; reading-level [RL] controls, ages 6-7) to

Rapid eye movement dependent central apnea with periodic leg movements.

Central sleep apnea is a period of at least 10 s without airflow, during which no ventilatory effort is present. Most of the central apneas occur in Non-Rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. Central apnea occuring in Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep is extremely rare. We present our patient who had a diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea in another sleep center since 2003. His Auto Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine was disrupted so he admitted to our center to renew his machine and for daytime sleepiness while using his machine. The polysomnography revealed central apneas ending with

Attentional constraints on target selection for smooth pursuit eye movements.

Saccadic eye movements are strongly influenced by shifts of attention to non-target objects. In contrast, we have shown previously that the initiation of smooth pursuit eye movements is relatively unaffected when attention is shifted to objects that are either stationary or move in the same direction as the pursuit target (Souto & Kerzel, 2008). Here, we asked how attention interacts with target selection when a choice has to be made between objects moving in opposite directions. In a dual-task paradigm, observers had to pursue a designated object while making a perceptual judgment on an objec

Antidepressant medications, neuroleptics, and prominent eye movements during NREM sleep.

Eye movements during stage 2, 3, and 4 sleep have been associated with the use of several selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) medications. This activity has been postulated to be a serotonin effect. The authors identified all cases of nonrapid eye movement (NREM) eye movements observed over a 36-month period in an accredited hospital-based sleep center and then correlated the findings with the patient's medications. The polysomnogram (PSG) studies of 2,959 consecutive adults were evaluated prospectively to identify all patients with atypical eye movements which occurred during NREM s

Using fast eye movements to study fatigue in multiple sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether internuclear ophthalmoparesis (INO) due to demyelination of the medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF) provides a model for studying the poorly understood symptom of fatigue in multiple sclerosis (MS). We asked whether repetitive horizontal saccades increased eye movement disconjugacy in patients with MS with INO, but not in healthy subjects. METHODS: We compared conjugacy of horizontal saccades in 9 patients with INO (4 bilateral, total 13) and 8 controls during minute 1 and minute 10 of a fatigue test; we measured the ratio of abducting/adducting peak velocit

Latency of saccades and vergence eye movements in dyslexic children.

The goal of this study was to explore the latency of eye movements both in direction and in depth in dyslexic children. Sixteen dyslexic (mean age: 11.12 +/- 1.08 years) and 14 non-dyslexic children (mean age: 12.08 +/- 0.99 years) were tested. Two different paradigms (simultaneous and gap) were used to elicit pure saccades at far and at near distance, pure vergence (convergence and divergence) and combined saccade-vergence movements. Horizontal eye movements from both eyes were recorded simultaneously by a photoelectric device (Oculometer, Dr. Bouis). The mean latency of saccades at far dista

Eye movements characteristics of Chinese dyslexic children in picture searching.

BACKGROUND: Reading Chinese, a kind of ideogram, relies more on visual cognition. The visuospatial cognitive deficit of Chinese dyslexia is an interesting topic that has received much attention. The purpose of current research was to explore the visuopatial cognitive characteristics of Chinese dyslexic children by studying their eye movements via a picture searching test. METHODS: According to the diagnostic criteria defined by ICD-10, twenty-eight dyslexic children (mean age (10.12 +/- 1.42) years) were enrolled from the Clinic of Children Behavioral Disorder in the third affiliated hospital

Looking for answers: eye movements in non-visual cognitive tasks.

It is not known why people move their eyes when engaged in non-visual cognition. The current study tested the hypothesis that differences in saccadic eye movement rate (EMR) during non-visual cognitive tasks reflect different requirements for searching long-term memory. Participants performed non-visual tasks requiring relatively low or high long-term memory retrieval while eye movements were recorded. In three experiments, EMR was substantially lower for low-retrieval than for high-retrieval tasks, including in an eyes closed condition in Experiment 3. Neither visual imagery nor between-task

Visual motion due to eye movements helps guide the hand.

Movement of the body, head, or eyes with respect to the world creates one of the most common yet complex situations in which the visuomotor system must localize objects. In this situation, vestibular, proprioceptive, and extra-retinal information contribute to accurate visuomotor control. The utility of retinal motion information, on the other hand, is questionable, since a single pattern of retinal motion can be produced by any number of head or eye movements. Here we investigated whether retinal motion during a smooth pursuit eye movement contributes to visuomotor control. When subjects purs

Potential role of anti-GAD antibodies in abnormal eye movements.

Glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) catalyzes the conversion of glutamic acid to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Autoantibodies directed against GAD (antiGAD-Ab) have been described in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, stiff-man syndrome, and in a few patients with progressive cerebellar ataxia. The presence of these autoantibodies suggests an autoimmune pathophysiological mechanism for the neurological manifestations in these disorders. However, the exact role of antiGAD-Ab and GABAergic neurotransmission in the pathogenesis of the neurological manifestations, particularly in p

Eye movements evoked by selective saccular nerve stimulation in cats.

OBJECTIVE: Because of technical obstacles in controlling current spread to adjacent peripheral nerve, eye movements evoked by activation of the otolith organs have not been investigated in detail compared to eye movements evoked by activation of the canal organs. We attempted to solve this problem by applying more sensitive methods using fine needle and strictly controlling stimulus current intensity compare with filed potential for selective stimulation. METHODS: Eye movements evoked by selective, unilateral saccular (SAC) nerve stimulation were investigated using both electrooculography (EO

Experimental and computational analysis of monkey smooth pursuit eye movements.

Smooth pursuit eye movements are guided by visual feedback and are surprisingly accurate despite the time delay between visual input and motor output. Previous models have reproduced the accuracy of pursuit either by using elaborate visual signals or by adding sources of motor feedback. Our goal was to constrain what types of signals drive pursuit by obtaining data that would discriminate between these two modeling approaches, represented by the "image motion model" and the "tachometer feedback" model. Our first set of experiments probed the visual properties of pursuit with brief square-pulse
