Outcomes of Open Fronto-Facial Resection for Fungal Osteomyelitis of Frontal Bone.

INTRODUCTION: The second wave of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) led to the resurgence of opportunistic infections due to the injudicious use of steroids. Sinonasal mucormycosis was declared an epidemic in India during the pandemic. Mucormycosis was managed effectively by surgical debridement along with systemic amphotericin B. Currently, a resurgence of mucormycosis following initial treatment, in the form of fungal osteomyelitis of the frontal bone, is being seen in India. METHODS: This prospective study included 10 patients with fungal osteomyelitis of the frontal bone due to mucormyco

Multiplane Facelift Following Facial Bone Contouring for Enhanced Mobilization and Rejuvenation.

INTRODUCTION: The aging process is inevitable in life, and the social demand for rejuvenation increases by year. The face acquires both soft tissue and skeletal changes through aging, and correcting only one side has limits in natural rejuvenation. Thus, the authors combined multiplane facelift with whole-facial bone contouring for maximal results. METHODS: From March 2017 to February 2019, a total of 22 patients received multiplane facelift following facial bone contouring in our institute. The authors retrospectively reviewed information on demographics, surgical procedure, complications, a

Diagnostic performance of brain computed tomography to detect facial bone fractures.

OBJECTIVE: Most patients with head trauma require brain computed tomography (CT) in the emergency department. However, the requirement for facial CT remains controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of brain CT alone for detection of facial fractures and its ability to determine the requirement for additional facial CT. METHODS: This retrospective multicenter study was conducted in two tertiary hospitals in Seoul, Republic of Korea, between January 2014 and December 2015. Data were collected from the medical records of adult patients (aged over 18 years) who ha

Single Stage Repair of #30 Facial Cleft with Bone Morphogenic Protein.

Tessier #30 clefts (median mandibular clefts) represent a spectrum of deformities ranging from a minor cleft in the lower lip to complete clefts of the mandible involving the tongue, lower lip, hyoid bone, thyroid cartilages, and manubrium. Various techniques have been used to address these problems; the most common procedure involving 2 stages: an initial correction of the soft tissue followed by closure of the mandibular cleft at a later date using bone grafting. This approach was subsequently reduced to a single operation, but still required harvesting of autologous bone graft. Here, we des

Experimental model for bone regeneration in oral and cranio-maxillo-facial surgery.

Bone and tooth loss, as a result of trauma, anatomical or congenital reasons, cancer, and periodontal disease, is a common therapeutic problem in the fields of cranio-maxillo-facial surgery and periodontics. The proposed techniques for the treatment of various bone defects encountered include bone grafts, bone substitutes, guided tissue regeneration, and distraction osteogenesis as well as their combinations. In addition, dental implants have been successfully utilized for the restoration of full or partial edentulism. The introduction and development of new therapeutic approaches and devices

Determination of a facial nerve safety zone for navigated temporal bone surgery.

BACKGROUND: Transtemporal approaches require surgeons to drill the temporal bone to expose target lesions while avoiding the critical structures within it, such as the facial nerve and other neurovascular structures. We envision a novel protective neuronavigation system that continuously calculates the drill tip-to-facial nerve distance intraoperatively and produces audiovisual warnings if the surgeon drills too close to the facial nerve. Two major problems need to be solved before such a system can be realized. OBJECTIVE: To solve the problems of (1) facial nerve segmentation and (2) calcula

Fractured facial bone reduction and resorbable plate fixation using tapper.

A resorbable fixation system has many advantages, but there are complicated procedures to be accomplished to fix a resorbable plate. The complicated procedures in the fixation of a resorbable plate make the operation for facial fractures more difficult and can result in extended operation time and incomplete reduction or fixation. For these reasons, we suggest a new way of using a tapper that can make the surgery more simple and accurate than before. After the resorbable plate is properly located above the fractured site, a hole on the fracture fragment is made by drill, and the tapper is inse

Pseudotumour of the temporal bone: an unusual [corrected] cause of otorrhoea and facial palsy.

An inflammatory pseudotumour of the temporal bone is a rare, idiopathic, fibro-inflammatory lesion which mimics malignancy. Although such a lesion is known to occur elsewhere in the body such as the liver, abdominal viscera, pelvis, thorax and the upper respiratory tract, the involvement of the temporal bone is extremely unusual. We present such a case in a 60-year-old man, which provided a great diagnostic challenge. We review the key radiological and histological results that confirmed the diagnosis and demonstrated for the first time that oral steroids alone may completely resolve the condi

An unusual complication of condylectomy: fracture of the temporal bone and intratemporal facial paralysis.

The incidence of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis appears to be decreasing with the increased socioeconomic status of society. The intraoperative complications were reported to be few, the most dangerous of which are facial nerve injury during the extended preauricular incision and maxillary artery injury during condylectomy. The authors report a case of fracture of the temporal bone tearing the intratemporal portion of the facial nerve, resulting in a total facial nerve paralysis.

Gross dehiscence of the bone covering the facial nerve in the light of otological surgery.

Understanding the relationship between the anatomy of the fallopian canal and a variety of ear diseases is necessary. In this study, our purpose was to identify the incidence of facial nerve dehiscence in patients undergoing surgery for a variety of chronic ear diseases. The operative records of 219 patients were reviewed retrospectively for dehiscence of the facial canal. The diagnoses were cholesteatoma (n = 49), tympanosclerosis (n = 51), adhesive otitis media (n = 38), and chronic otitis media (n = 81). Only 17 of 219 who underwent tympanoplasty without mastoidectomy were excluded from the
