Dermatomyositis-erythrodermia: clinical presentation not associated to malignancy. A case report.

The association of erythroderma and dermatomyositis is rare. In 6 reported cases found by searching Pubmed, half of them were associated with digestive tract neoplasms (stomach and liver). We report the case of a 69 years-old woman with bilateral proximal weakness, joint pain, photosensitivity, facial and heliotrope erythema lasting 18 months. One month prior to hospital admission she showed progressive dysphagia and a universal erythema and scaling that affected mucosa, palms and soles with an accompanying weight loss of 10 kg in 6 months. No malignancy was identified at any level despite an

Mucormycosis: oral and prosthodontic implications. A report of 14 patients.

This report includes 14 patients with rhinocerebral mucormycosis treated at the UCLA Medical Center since 1970. This disease has an extremely high mortality and morbidity. It is of interest to dentists because of the common presenting symptoms of periorbital cellulitis and sinusitis and the occasional presenting symptoms of dental pain or subperiosteal swelling. It is of further interest because of the intraoral and extraoral midfacial defects that result from disease extension and the necessary surgical débridement. The resultant facial and oral defects are far more difficult to restore than

Bilateral inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor mastoiditis.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory myoblastic tumors (IMTs) are rare, mesenchymal neoplasms most commonly located in areas of previous inflammation. In the temporal bone, these tumors typically present as solitary, space-occupying lesions that clinically resemble chronic otitis media. METHODS: We present a case of bilateral IMTs with facial nerve involvement, sigmoid sinus thrombosis, leptomeningeal enhancement, and seizures. RESULTS/CONCLUSION: This case demonstrates the need for a high index of suspicion of IMT when imaging reveals bilateral mastoid opacification. These tumors are more aggressive th

[Skin tumors as marker lesions for tumor syndromes].

A number of hereditary tumor syndromes are associated with characteristic dermal neoplasms and knowledge and early diagnosis of these lesions may facilitate the diagnostic of the underlying syndrome. These syndromes include Muir-Torre syndrome, associated with cystic sebaceomas, Cowden syndrome, associated with multiple tricholemmomas, Carney complex associated with multiple superficial angiomyxomas, Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome associated with multiple fibrofolliculomas, tuberous sclerosis associated with multiple facial angiofibromas and so-called Koenen tumors, patients with renal cell cancer as

Lipid cell tumor in an adolescent girl: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Lipid cell tumors of the ovary are rare sex cord neoplasms and account for < 0.1% of ovarian tumors. CASE: A 16-year-old girl sought medical advice because of amenorrhea and virilization, manifested as facial hirsutism and temporal balding. Her total testosterone level was increased in comparison with normal values. Ultrasonography revealed an echogenic left adnexal tumor about 5.7 x 6.3 x 5.5 cm. The patient underwent laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy, and pathology showed a lipid cell tumor. Postoperatively, the serum testosterone level returned to normal. CONCLUSION: The tumor a

Osteoma of the tongue.

Osteomas are benign bony neoplasms commonly found in long bones and in the skull and facial bones. Osseous growths within soft tissue structures of the head and neck are rare. Review of the English literature reveals only 31 cases of osteomas within the soft tissues of the tongue and 2 in the buccal mucosa. We report on a patient with a bony hard asymptomatic mass at the base of the tongue, which was found to be an osteoma by biopsy. Complete removal was declined by the patient. There was no progression during a six-month period of follow-up.

Familial neurofibromatosis 1 microdeletions: cosegregation with distinct facial phenotype and early onset of cutaneous neurofibromata.

A notable subset of the recent literature on the disorder neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) describes patients with NF1, facial anomalies, and other unusual findings. We describe a molecular re-evaluation of two such families reported previously by Kaplan and Rosenblatt [1985], who suggested that their NF1 manifestations, facial phenotype, and other findings could result from a disorder distinct from NF1. Submicroscopic deletions involving the NF1 gene were identified in both families by fluorescent in situ hybridization and analysis of somatic cell hybrids. Affected subjects of the first family

Comparing Antegrade and Retrograde Parotidectomy: Surgical Parameters and Complications.

INTRODUCTION: Patotidectomy is the treatment of choice for superficial parotid gland lesions. The present study aimed to assess the facial nerve status, as well as peri-and postsurgical complications, in two surgical techniques (antegrade and retrograde) for parotidectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was conducted on 56 patients diagnosed with parotid neoplasms from 2013-2015. The patients were randomly assigned to two groups of antegrade and retrograde. In the retrograde group, the dissection was performed initially to expose the facial nerve branches, while in the antegrade approach,

Operative exposure and management of the petrous and upper cervical internal carotid artery.

The exposure and operative management of the petrous and upper cervical internal carotid artery (ICA) in 29 patients is detailed. Twenty-seven of these patients had extensive cranial base neoplasms (benign or malignant), 1 had an inflammatory cholesteatoma, and 1 had an aneurysm of the upper cervical ICA immediately proximal to the carotid canal. Preoperative studies useful in the evaluation of these patients included computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, cerebral and cervical angiography, and a balloon occlusion test of the ICA with evaluation of neurological status and of cerebral

Cancellous osteoma of the maxillary tuberosity: case report.

The osteoma is a benign, bone-forming lesion that is not considered a true neoplasm. It almost exclusively affects the flat bones of the skull and face. Jaw lesions may cause facial deformity and impair oral function. Multiple osteomas may be associated with Gardner's syndrome. Clinically and radiographically, osteomas may need to be differentiated from other bone-forming lesions. This article describes a cancellous osteoma of the left maxillary molar and tuberosity area and differentiates it from other benign and malignant lesions, including the parosteal osteosarcoma.

Neurosarcoidosis presenting as acute infarction on diffusion-weighted MR imaging: summary of radiologic findings.

A 36-year-old woman presented with acute-onset right lower extremity paresthesias, dysarthria, right facial droop, and right hemiparesis. CT and MR imaging of the brain revealed extensive white matter disease and left basal ganglia infarction with dural and leptomeningeal enhancement. Differential considerations included vasculitis, granulomatous disease, and neoplasm. Chest, abdomen, and pelvis CTs were normal. Right temporal lobe biopsy revealed noncaseating granulomatous inflammation consistent with neurosarcoidosis.

Actinomycosis of the parotid masquerading as malignant neoplasm.

BACKGROUND: Primary actinomycosis of the parotid gland is of rare occurrence and can mimic a malignant neoplasm both clinically as well as radiologically. CASE PRESENTATION: We present here a case of primary actinomycosis of the parotid gland presenting with a parotid mass lesion with erosion of skull bones. CONCLUSIONS: Clinical presentation of cervico-facial actinomycosis is characterized by the presence of a suppurative or indurative mass with discharging sinuses. The lesion demonstrates characteristic features on fine needle aspiration cytology and histology, however at times the finding

Surgical excision of an infraorbital nerve schwannoma via a transconjunctival approach with lateral canthotomy: a case report.

Schwannoma is a benign, encapsulated, slow-growing tumor that arises from Schwann cells. Approximately 25%-45% of extracranial schwannomas occur in the head and neck region, accounting for 1%-8% of all neoplasms. However, involvement of the infraorbital nerve is exceptionally rare. This report describes the surgical management of an infraorbital nerve schwannoma using a transconjunctival approach with lateral canthotomy, and documents the clinical, functional and aesthetic outcomes at 12 months. A 32-year-old woman with a history of hypochromic microcytic anemia presented with a progressively

Locally Invasive Papillary Intralymphatic Angioendothelioma Arising Within a Lymphatic/Venous Malformation.

BACKGROUND Papillary intralymphatic angioendothelioma (PILA) is a rare vascular tumor affecting children and young adults, with less than 50 cases reported in the literature. This tumor typically presents in the extremities, exhibits borderline behavior, and has a prominent lymphatic phenotype. Originally thought to be malignant, PILA was later recognized for its borderline behavior and lymphatic features, leading to its current classification as a "rarely metastasizing lymphatic vascular neoplasm". CASE REPORT We present the case of a 10-year-old girl with a 6-year history of a right facial v

CT AND MRI FEATURES OF CAROTID BODY PARAGANGLIOMAS IN 16 DOGS.

Carotid body tumors (paragangliomas) arise from chemoreceptors located at the carotid bifurcation. In imaging studies, this neoplasm may be confused with other neck neoplasms such as thyroid carcinoma. The purpose of this retrospective, cross-sectional study was to describe computed tomographic (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics of confirmed carotid body tumors in a multi-institutional sample of dogs. A total of 16 dogs met inclusion criteria (14 examined using CT and two with MRI). The most common reason for imaging was a palpable cervical mass or respiratory signs (i.e

Large Parotid Gland Lipoblastoma in a Teenager.

BACKGROUND: Lipoblastomas are rare benign neoplasms that arise from fetal white fat cells. They are typically found in children under the age of 3 and have been reported in the mediastinum, extremities, and infrequently in the head and neck. We present a rare case of a lipoblastoma arising from the parotid gland and the first known report of a parotid lipoblastoma in a teenager. CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-year-old male presented with a painless, slowly enlarging parotid mass and left facial swelling. A fine needle aspiration was non-diagnostic and initial MRI showed a 3.8 cm × 5.0 cm × 4.0 cm fa

Inflammatory Pseudotumor in the Nasal Cavity and Sinuses: A Case Report and Associated Literature Review.

Inflammatory pseudotumor (IP) is a clinically aggressive but histologically benign condition of unknown cause. It rarely appears in the nasal cavity and sinuses. Here, we describe a 24-year-old female with the main symptom of right nasal obstruction. Examinations showed dilation in the right maxillary sinus and a pale neoplasm in the nasal cavity. The neoplasm was completely excised under endoscope. Postoperative pathology showed significant proliferation of plasma cells and lymphocytes, indicating the presence of IP. No recurrence was found during 20 months of follow-up. Only 28 cases (10 mal
