Storage temperature and differing methods of sample preparation in the measurement of urinary albumin.

Microalbuminuria is a predictor of persistent proteinuria, renal failure and cardiovascular disease and therefore accurate determination of urinary albumin concentration is important. We examined the stability of albumin in urine under different conditions of storage, temperature and sample preparation. There was no significant difference in urinary albumin concentration between fresh urine and urine stored at either 4 degrees C or 20 degrees C for up to 7 days. Similarly in urine samples from diabetic patients there was no significant difference in albumin concentration at levels ranging from

[Construction of a multiple mood scale].

A self-report instrument to measure multiple mood states was constructed. Six hundred and forty-eight Japanese affect adjectives were collected and divided into two lists. Japanese undergraduates totaling 1,254 rated each adjective in the list on a 4-point intensity scale to assess their momentary mood states. Factor analyses revealed 131 items with high loading on extracted major factors. The new list of these 131 items was rated three times by undergraduates totaling 1,768 and was factor analysed. Throughout the factor analyses, eight factors emerged with consistent reliability. Finally, 80

[A statistical comparison of the different factor analyses of the AMP-system (author's transl)].

The intercorrelations of five different factor-analytically derived syndrome solutions of the AMP-system were computed. The syndromes were based on the psychopathological symptoms of 2,269 patients on admission to the psychiatric clinic of the Free University of Berlin. The syndromes which were similar in content in the solutions of different clinics could be shown to intercorrelate quite highly. Only the different syndromes of stupor and obsession-compulsion did not show the same high degree of similarity. Between the syndromes of the solution of one clinic as well as between the solutions of

Analysis of the relationship between socioeconomic factors and stomach cancer incidence in Slovenia.

An unequal population distribution of well-known major risk factors explains much of the variation in the incidence of stomach cancer worldwide. The aim of this study was to determine whether geographical variation of the stomach cancer incidence rate between Slovenia's municipalities during years 1995-2001 could partially be explained by variations in the socioeconomic status as an indirect stomach cancer risk factor. A composite measure of each region's socioeconomic status, labelled as deprivation index, was created from basic socioeconomic characteristics of each municipality using factor

Mixed membership latent variable model with unknown factors, factor loadings and number of extreme profiles.

Mixed membership models are frequently utilized to capture complex individual heterogeneity in multivariate and longitudinal data. A key aspect of mixed membership modeling involves determining the number of extreme profiles (classes), a task traditionally managed through inefficient criterion-based methods. This task is particularly challenging when the predictors within the models are latent and derived from multiple observed variables using exploratory factor analysis. In this paper, we consider an innovative mixed membership latent variable model, which consists of an exploratory factor mo

A meta-structure for DSM-5 and ICD-11 pathological traits and the differentiation of personality functioning at different trait levels in older adults.

OBJECTIVES: Categorical criteria are not well suited to inform personality disorder (PD) diagnoses in older adults. More promising are the ICD-11 and DSM-5 alternative models. Both conceptualize PD by level of severity and maladaptive traits. Severity is conditional for making a PD diagnosis. Trait levels portray stylistic differences in PD expression. Yet, in older adults the hierarchical trait structure is unknown. Neither is the differentiation of the severity criterion from maladaptive traits confirmed. METHODS: A series of exploratory factor analyses with progressively greater numbers of

Statistical methodology for estimating the mean difference in a meta-analysis without study-specific variance information.

Statistical inference for analyzing the results from several independent studies on the same quantity of interest has been investigated frequently in recent decades. Typically, any meta-analytic inference requires that the quantity of interest is available from each study together with an estimate of its variability. The current work is motivated by a meta-analysis on comparing two treatments (thoracoscopic and open) of congenital lung malformations in young children. Quantities of interest include continuous end-points such as length of operation or number of chest tube days. As studies only

The Psychosis Continuum: Testing a Bifactor Model of Psychosis in a General Population Sample.

Although the factor structure of psychosis continues to be debated by taxonomists, recent studies have supported a bifactor model consisting of a general psychosis factor and 5 uncorrelated symptom-specific factors. While this model has received support in clinical samples, it has not been tested at the general population level. Analysis was conducted on Wave 2 of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (N = 34 653). Twenty-two psychotic symptoms were used as observed indicators of psychosis. These items were chosen based on their conceptual similarity to the items

Testing the dimensional structure of DSM-5 posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms in a nonclinical trauma-exposed adolescent sample.

BACKGROUND: The current study investigated the underlying dimensionality of DSM-5 posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in a trauma-exposed Chinese adolescent sample using a confirmatory factor analytic (CFA) alternative model approach. METHODS: The sample consisted of 559 students (242 females and 314 males) ranging in age from 12 to 18 years (M = 15.8, SD = 1.3). Participants completed the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5, the Major Depression Disorder and Panic Disorder subscales of the Revised Children's Anxiety and Depression Scale, and the Aggressive Behavior subscale of the Youth Self-

Factor analysis demonstrates a symptom cluster related to methane and non-methane production in irritable bowel syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic disorder often subdivided into constipation-predominant and diarrhea-predominant forms. Earlier studies have shown that IBS patients with methane detected on lactulose breath test (LBT) are more likely to have constipation. The goal of this study was to conduct a factor analysis to determine whether there is a cluster of symptoms associated with methane production. METHODS: Patients with IBS referred for a LBT completed a questionnaire assessing 31 symptoms. The degree of each symptom was graded on a visual analog scale of 0 to 5. Expl

Personality subtypes in patients with panic disorder.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined personality subtypes of adults diagnosed with panic disorder (PD). METHODS: As part of a National Institute of Mental Health-funded study on personality in a clinical population, randomly selected psychologists and psychiatrists used a Q-sort instrument to describe 96 adults diagnosed with PD. RESULTS: Q-factor analysis yielded 4 personality subtypes: high functioning, emotionally dysregulated, inhibited/avoidant, and somatizing. Within the sample, the subtypes differed on Axis I and II pathology, adaptive functioning, and developmental and family history varia

A Rasch analysis of the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale, Form C.

The psychometric structure of the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale, Form C (SHSS:C) was tested in a Rasch analysis using data from 279 subjects. The Rasch model is the model of choice because it justifies the use of the sum of the item scores as a measure for the underlying construct. Rasch analysis revealed that use of a single sum score (number of suggestions passed) to express hypnotic ability is not sufficiently justified. However, the omission of the mosquito-hallucination and anosmia items (Items 3 and 9) rendered this short 10-item form of the SHSS:C sufficiently compatible with r

Classes of disruptive behaviour in a sample of young elementary school children.

BACKGROUND: The objectives were to (1) classify young children to groups differing in disruptive behaviour, (2) determine whether the patterns of disruptive behaviour in these groups are in accordance with the conceptualisation of disruptive disorders as described in DSM-IV, and (3) optimise the classification of children in groups. METHODS: Disruptive behaviour of 636 seven-year-old elementary schoolchildren was assessed with the CBCL/4-18. Using CBCL items rated as very consistent with DSM-IV categories Conduct Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Diso

Multifactorial etiology of cervical cancer: a hypothesis.

Cancer of the cervix is the second most common life-threatening cancer among women worldwide, with incidence rates ranging from 4.8 per 100,000 women per year in the Middle East to 44.3 per 100,000 in East Africa. Epidemiologic and clinical data demonstrate that human papillomaviruses (HPV), especially HPV-16 and HPV-18, play at least a major if not a necessary role in the etiology of cervical cancer. However, many investigators acknowledge that HPV is not sufficient to induce cervical cancer and that a multifactorial etiology is likely. HPV can be found in a growing proportion of patients wit

An exploratory study of the factors related to mouth breathing syndrome in primary school children.

OBJECTIVE: Mouth breathing syndrome (MBS) is defined as a set of signs and symptoms that may be completely or incompletely present in subjects who, for various reasons, replace the correct pattern of nasal breathing with an oral or mixed pattern. It is important to identify the relevant factors affecting MBS in order to diagnose its cause since breathing obstructions can result from multiple factors. The purpose of this study is to clarify the relevant factors and the interrelationships between factors affecting MBS among children. DESIGN: We surveyed 380 elementary school children from 6 to

Attitudes toward lesbians and gay men: a factor-analytic study.

This paper reports a series of factor analyses of responses to attitude statements about lesbians and gay men. Using a common factor model with oblique rotation, a bipolar "Condemnation-Tolerance" factor was observed repeatedly in four separate samples of undergraduates. The factor accounts for 35-45% of the total common variance in responses, and is similar for male and female respondents and for questionnaires concerning both lesbians and gay men. A "Beliefs" factor accounts for another 5% of the total variance. It is argued that scales assessing attitudes toward lesbians and gay men should

Factor analysis of the catatonia rating scale and catatonic symptom distribution across four diagnostic groups.

Catatonia is a frequent psychomotor syndrome, which has received increasing recognition over the last decade. The assessment of the catatonic syndrome requires systematic rating scales that cover the complex spectrum of catatonic motor signs and behaviors. The Catatonia Rating Scale (CRS) is such an instrument, which has been validated and which has undergone extensive reliability testing. In the present study, to further validate the CRS, the items composing this scale were submitted to principal components factor extraction followed by a varimax rotation. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was
