The prevalence of antithrombin (AT) deficiency in 342 unselected Brazilian patients with venous thrombosis was 1.16%, which increased to 3% when only patients under the age of 50 or with a familial history of thrombosis were considered. In two patients, a clinical (contraceptive use) or genetic risk factor (factor V Leiden and C677T in the methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase gene [MTHFR]) was identified and corroborated the hypothesis that an interaction of factors accounted for the appearance of thrombosis. However, no risk factor other than AT deficiency was identified in one patient with a

The most powerful instrument to establish the presence or absence of a coagulation disorder is the history of the patient. In addition, screening laboratory tests (consisting of the platelet count, bleeding time and global clotting assays, such as the prothrombin time and the activated partial thromboplastin time) may be helpful to support the diagnosis. In two patients, a 21-year-old man and a 10-year-old girl, with a marked history of enhanced bleeding normal screening laboratory tests were found. The male patient had a congenital alpha 2-antiplasmin deficiency and the girl had a homozygous

BACKGROUND: Bleeding and coagulation disorders are influenced by genetic variations and environmental factors. The prevalence of coagulation factor deficiencies in Saudi Arabia, at both national and regional levels, remains largely unexamined. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of coagulation factor deficiencies and analyze the corresponding coagulation profiles in patients exhibiting low coagulation factor levels in the Asir region.
METHODS: This retrospective study assessed 228 patients exhibiting low coagulation factor levels. Data relevant to patients with coagulation factor defi

There is a considerable number of women with inherited bleeding disorders in Iran. von Willebrand disease, Glanzman thrombasthenia and factor XIII deficiency are the most common coagulation disorders. The main cause of this high rate of coagulation disorders is attributed to a high rate of consanguineous marriages in Iran. Medical care continues to improve for individuals affected with coagulation disorders in Iran. However, these disorders continue to have a significant impact on the affected Iranian women. As a result of the hereditary nature of these disorders, the impact extends to the psy

National yearly surveys were carried out between 1985 and 1989 to determine the prevalence of antibodies for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in Finnish patients with bleeding disorders. From 192 out of the 214 haemophiliacs (90%) tested, 2 patients were positive for anti-HIV. No seropositivities were found after 1985. Fourteen out of 21 patients (67%) with type III von Willebrand's disease, and 7 out of 8 patients (88%) with factor XIII deficiency were tested with negative results. The low prevalence of anti-HIV (0.94%; 2/213 tested), is mainly due to the self-sufficiency for clotting facto

Acquired coagulation inhibitors have become a popular area of research because they cause severe bleeding tendency in many patients. The use of acquired coagulation inhibitors requires rapid and precise diagnosis. Some acquired coagulation inhibitors show prolongation in the activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and/or prothrombin time (PT). To diagnose these disorders, mixing test is very useful. However, lupus anticoagulant related disorders, such as lupus anticoagulant hypoprothrombinemia syndrome (LAHPS), are difficult to diagnose because they are sometimes associated with a reducti

Autoimmune factor XIII (FXIII) deficiency is a rare hemorrhagic disease characterized by severe bleeding and a high mortality rate. However, the pathogenesis of this disease remains unclear. FXIII consumption caused by infections is becoming increasingly common. Our clinical investigation, combined with in vivo experiments, revealed that patients and mice with autoimmune FXIII deficiency displayed complement dysfunction and that pathogenic infection and autoantibody generation were positively correlated. Further analysis revealed the presence of combined FXIII-C3 autoantibodies in patients wit

Inherited defects of coagulation Factor XIII (FXIII) can be categorized into severe and mild forms based on their genotype and phenotype. Heterozygous mutations occurring in F13A1 and F13B genes causing mild FXIII deficiency have been reported only in the last few years primarily because the mild FXIII deficiency patients are often asymptomatic unless exposed to some kind of a physical trauma. However, unlike mutations causing severe FXIII deficiency, many of these mutations have not been comprehensively characterized based on expression studies. In our current article, we have transiently exp

Less common than acquired bleeding disorders in the perinatal period, congenital deficiencies of the clotting proteins, particularly the hemophilias A and B, can be just as devastating. Detection of these disorders may be delayed because a suspect family history is lacking in up to one third of the cases of hemophilia, and parents are usually asymptomatic in the other congenital factor deficiencies. Physiologically low levels of the liver-dependent and contact factors can make the interpretation of the common hemostasis screens difficult. Hence, the use of age-adjusted tables such as those pre

BACKGROUND: Coagulation factor XII (FXII) deficiency is a rare coagulation disorder, often incidentally detected during routine physical examinations, invasive procedures, or preoperative screenings, with no specific clinical manifestations. Here, we report a case of FXII deficiency.
METHODS: A 46-year-old female patient was found to have unexplained prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) during routine preoperative testing, without clinical bleeding symptoms. We performed an APTT mixing study, anti-cardiolipin antibody (ACA) testing, anti-β2-glycoprotein 1 (anti-β2-GP1) antib

PURPOSE: Acquired Factor XIII (FXIII) deficiency is prevalent in hospitalized or surgical patients, with FXIII activity <70% in over 20% of cases. A decrease in FXIII has been linked with postoperative bleeding, anastomotic insufficiency, and a greater likelihood of requiring reoperation. This study aims to identify patients at increased risk for postoperative complications by comparing open versus minimally invasive pancreatic and esophageal surgery.
METHODS: This prospective, monocentric observational study was conducted at Heidelberg University Hospital (Germany). Inclusion criteria consis

BACKGROUND: Epistaxis can have a variety of different local or systemic causes. It is the cardinal symptom of von Willebrand disease (VWD), the most frequent congenital bleeding disorder with a prevalence of approximately 1%. The usual routine coagulation screening tests (PT, APTT, platelet count) are not sufficient to diagnose VWD, factor XIII (FXIII)-deficiency or platelet dysfunction.
METHOD: A prospective study was conducted implementing enhanced coagulation screening for bleeding disorders in a total of 100 inpatients admitted for epistaxis.
RESULTS: A bleeding disorder was found in 13%

Fifty-one patients with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome were investigated for abnormalities of platelets and coagulation. Thirty-eight were examined prospectively and 13 retrospectively. A bleeding history was taken from all patients; only four (8%) gave no history of a bruising or bleeding tendency. Nine patients (18%) had significant haemostatic abnormalities of whom four (8%) had a platelet release defect, three (6%) had a factor XI deficiency and two (4%) had a factor XIII deficiency. Additionally 16 patients (31%) had mild abnormalities of uncertain significance of whom four (8%) had prolonged ble

BACKGROUND: Diminished levels of FXIII are significantly correlated with hematoma expansion (HE) and unfavorable clinical outcomes. Although the crucial function of FXIII in coagulation is well-recognized, the connection between FXIII deficiency and either HE or negative prognosis in patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (sICH) is not well understood.
METHODS: Patients with sICH were confirmed through baseline computed tomography scans conducted within 6 h of symptom onset. Plasma FXIII levels were assessed at the time of admission using a standardized enzyme-linked immunosorbent

BACKGROUND: Livedoid vasculopathy (LV) is a rare, disabling disease characterized by painful ulcers, livedo reticularis and atrophy blanche. Hypercoagulation, endothelial, and microcirculatory dysfunction are believed to be responsible for the pathogenesis of this difficult-to-treat disease.
OBJECTIVES: This study sought to investigate the frequency of endothelial dysfunction, hypercoagulability, and nailfold capillaroscopic features in LV patients to shed light on its etiology.
METHODS: This case-control study included 16 patients with LV, 24 with systemic sclerosis (SSc), and 23 control su

A 69-year-old Japanese man developed abdominal pain, purpura, proteinuria, and hematuria while receiving treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis. A skin biopsy revealed IgA-positive leukocytoclastic vasculitis, and a renal biopsy showed IgA-positive mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis with crescent formation. Based on these findings, we diagnosed IgA vasculitis with nephritis (IgAVN) and initiated treatment. The patient's abdominal symptoms improved following factor XIII supplementation and corticosteroids. Corticosteroids were administered, and after 5 months, the proteinuria was in compl

Inherited deficiencies of plasma proteins involved in blood coagulation generally lead to lifelong bleeding disorders, whose severity is inversely proportional to the degree of factor deficiency. Haemophilia A and B, inherited as X-linked recessive traits, are the most common hereditary hemorrhagic disorders caused by a deficiency or dysfunction of blood coagulation factor VIII (FVIII) and factor IX (FIX). Together with von Willebrand's disease, a defect of primary haemostasis, these X-linked disorders include 95% to 97% of all the inherited deficiencies of coagulation factors. The remaining d

BACKGROUND: Rare coagulation factor deficiencies are uncommon inherited bleeding disorders that remain poorly understood in many parts of the world, including Morocco. They primarily involve factors I, II, V, VII, X, XI, and XIII, and are generally inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. This study aims to analyze the epidemiological and biological profiles of these deficiencies in a Moroccan population.
METHODS: This is a retrospective descriptive study conducted over a ten-year period (January 2015 - May 2025) in the Hematology Laboratory of the Ibn Rochd University Hospital in Casablan

Women and girls with inherited bleeding disorders (IBD) face distinct gynaecologic and obstetric challenges, largely due to increased bleeding risk during key reproductive milestones. Conditions such as heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB), which affects a significant proportion of women with IBD, require collaborative management utilizing hormonal therapies and antifibrinolytics. Pregnancy, labour and delivery, and the postpartum period are high-risk phases. While IBDs like von Willebrand disease and haemophilia carriers may not inherently impair fertility or increase miscarriage risk, other severe
