Chlamydia suis infections are endemic in domestic pigs in Europe and can lead to conjunctivitis, pneumonia, enteritis and reproductive failure. Currently, the knowledge on the zoonotic potential of C. suis is limited. Moreover, the last decades, porcine tetracycline resistant C. suis strains have been isolated, which interfere with treatment of chlamydial infections. BACKGROUND: Little is known about work-related skin diseases among Polish self-employed farmers. In the National Register of Occupational Diseases, private farmers are placed in one category together with other agricultural workers, despite fundamental differences in compensation legislation and separate insurance institutions. Work-related respiratory symptoms and bronchial reactivity were studied in 76 never-smoking farmers and in a control group not exposed to organic dusts. A greatly increased incidence of hepatic angiosarcoma (H.A.S.) among Egyptian farmers involved in pest-control spraying operations attracted our attention. Fatal cases of farmer's lung (FL) are rare. We found, based on death certificates, 13 cases of FL with a fatal outcome in Finland between 1980 and 1990. Compared with incidence data from the years 1980 to 1982, the mortality was estimated as 0.7 percent. On average, death occurred 8 years after the diagnosis of FL. One patient died acutely after a heavy mold exposure. The other patients had chronic disease. Data on occupations and life styles of patients with cancer have been collected since 1983. To investigate cancer patterns and risks in farmers in Alberta, all farmers were abstracted and compared with nonfarmers in the data base, using case-control analysis. Controls were patients with cancer at any site except the index site.
