The epidemiology of HIV and HSV-2 infections among women participating in microbicide and vaccine feasibility studies in Northern Tanzania.

OBJECTIVES: To prepare for future HIV prevention trials, we conducted prospective cohort studies among women working in food and recreational facilities in northern Tanzania. We examined the prevalence and incidence of HIV and HSV-2, and associated risk factors. METHODS: Women aged 18-44 years working in food and recreational facilities were screened to determine their eligibility for the studies. Between 2008-2010, HIV-negative women were enrolled and followed for 12 months. At enrolment and 3-monthly, we collected socio-demographic and behavioural data, and performed clinical examinations f

Feasibility of onchocerciasis elimination with ivermectin treatment in endemic foci in Africa: first evidence from studies in Mali and Senegal.

BACKGROUND: Mass treatment with ivermectin is a proven strategy for controlling onchocerciasis as a public health problem, but it is not known if it can also interrupt transmission and eliminate the parasite in endemic foci in Africa where vectors are highly efficient. A longitudinal study was undertaken in three hyperendemic foci in Mali and Senegal with 15 to 17 years of annual or six-monthly ivermectin treatment in order to assess residual levels of infection and transmission and test whether ivermectin treatment could be safely stopped in the study areas. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: S

[Value and feasibility of electromyographic studies in the diagnosis of birth injuries to the cervical portion of the spinal cord].

A total of 160 patients with natal lesions of the spinal cord were examined by EMG. Of them 34 subjects showed lesions in the cervical part. The clinical data were compared with EMG findings. EMG changes, typical for anterior horn localization (II type of EMG) were found in the position of rest in 41.1% of the cases, while in synergy and voluntary movements in 70.6%. The author considers EMG an important and perspective method of examining children with natal spinal lesions.

[HOPAIR, a feasibility study focused on hope and recovery in suicide prevention].

Suicide is a major public health issue. Efforts to prevent it must begin as soon as hospitalization. Brief mental health interventions and contacts are known to be effective. The HOPAIR study proposes an innovative combination of peer support intervention and the Hope Box tool, followed by a reminder postcard sent to suicidal individuals hospitalized in psychiatric crisis units at two research centers in Lyon. Focusing on the resources of those affected, hope, and recovery, this study highlights the work of peer support workers and advanced practice nurses while offering encouraging prospects

How feasible is self-monitoring for the management of prehypertension? The REVERSE study.

BACKGROUND: Prehypertension (blood pressure (BP) 120-139/80-89 mmHg) affects 40% of UK adults increasing cardiovascular risk. While BP self-monitoring is effective in hypertension, its feasibility in prehypertension is unclear. Concerns include lack of interest, medicalisation, and unintended consequences, despite evidence suggesting it may empower individuals in risk management and prevention. AIM: To determine the feasibility of BP self-monitoring for prehypertension. METHOD: A prospective, non-randomised, mixed-methods, feasibility study across primary care in Lancashire and South Cumbria

Feasibility of Lung Hypothermic Perfusion Without Ventilation: An Experimental Study.

INTRODUCTION: Hypothermic machine perfusion (HMP) is widely used to preserve kidney, liver, and heart grafts, improving post-transplant outcomes. However, its application to lung preservation remains unproven. This study investigates whether HMP can be transferred to lungs as an alternative to static cold storage (SCS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a paired-lung model, lungs from seven swine (n = 14) were randomly assigned to 6 h of either SCS at 4°C or pressure-controlled HMP at 10°C using Perfadex Plus. The HMP system provided continuous perfusion without ventilation or oxygenation at a target

CAPoxy: A feasibility study to investigate multispectral imaging in nailfold capillaroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Nailfold capillaroscopy enables visualisation of structural abnormalities in the microvasculature of patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). The objective of this feasibility study was to determine whether multispectral imaging could provide functional assessment (differences in haemoglobin concentration or oxygenation) of capillaries to aid discrimination between healthy controls and patients with SSc. MSI of nailfold capillaries visualizes the smallest blood vessels and the impact of SSc on angiogenesis and their deformation, making it suitable for evaluating oxygenation-sensitiv

Estimating the plasma volume by infusing albumin: a retrospective feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: The combined changes in plasma albumin and blood hemoglobin can probably be used to estimate the plasma volume (PV) when albumin is infused. However, the optimal setup, timing of the blood sampling, and the importance of capillary leakage to the calculations are unclear. METHODS: In this technical vignette, we estimated the PV using retrospective data on plasma albumin and blood hemoglobin obtained during intravenous infusion of 3 mL/kg of 20% albumin over 30 min in 41 volunteers and 45 patients. We used a manual and a kinetic correction for capillary leakage of albumin. The resul

Feasibility of strategies to manage dysnatremia in pediatric CKRT: a simulation study.

BACKGROUND: Correction of dysnatremia during continuous kidney replacement therapy (CKRT) presents unique technical challenges. Most published experience comes from isolated case series, with limited comparative data across patient sizes or sodium ranges. Although several approaches (bag adjustment, post-filter substitution, and continuous infusion) have been described, their feasibility in pediatric practice has not been systematically evaluated. METHODS: A Python-based computational model of pediatric CKRT was developed to simulate all feasible allocations of dialysate, replacement, and inf
