Early Skin-To-Skin Contact Enhanced Feeding Behaviours and Stabilised Thermal Transition in Neonates Born by Caesarean.

AIM: Early skin-to-skin contact (SSC) is recommended after vaginal birth, but its implementation and evidence for Caesarean delivery remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of early SSC on neonatal adaptation and feeding behaviours in infants born via Caesarean section. METHODS: A randomised controlled trial was conducted at the Peking University People's Hospital in China from 1 January 2022 to 31 December 2023. We recruited 209 mother-infant dyads, assigning them to an intervention (early SSC) or control (routine care) group. Outcomes included timing of feeding-readiness beh

Comparison of overfeeding effects on gut physiology and microbiota in two goose breeds.

To have a better understanding of how the "gut-liver axis" mediates the lipid deposition in the liver, a comparison of overfeeding influence on intestine physiology and microbiota between Gang Goose and Tianfu Meat Goose was performed in this study. After force-feeding, compared with Gang Goose, Tianfu Meat Goose had better fat storage capacity in liver (397.94 vs. 166.54 for foie gras weight (g), P < 0.05; 6.37 vs. 2.92% for the ratio of liver to body, P < 0.05; 60.01 vs. 46.64% for fat content, P < 0.05) and the less subcutaneous adipose tissue weight (1240.96 g vs. 1440.46 g, P < 0.05). Rearing Ixodes scapularis, the Black-legged Tick: Feeding Immature Stages on Mice.

Ixodes scapularis, the vector of Lyme disease, is one of the most important disease vectors in the eastern and Midwestern United States. This species is a three host tick that requires a blood meal from a vertebrate host for each development stage, and the adult females require a blood meal for reproduction. Larval ticks attach to their host for 3 - 5 days for feeding and drop off the host when fully engorged. This dependency on several different hosts and the lengthy attachment time for engorgement complicates tick rearing in the laboratory setting. However, to understand tick biology and tic

Refeeding problems in a severe anorexia nervosa case.

Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is an eating disorder of puberty or adolescence. It is characterized by self-induced weight loss; various psychological disturbances including distorted body image, fear of obesity, active pursuit of thinness and loss of recognition of a number of body enteroreceptive sensations; and secondary physiological abnormalities. The treatment of AN includes individual psychotherapy, family therapy, and nutritional rehabilitation. Hospital treatment is required when the patient's medical condition is in danger due to hypovolemia or hypotension. If cardiac arrhythmias occur withou

Impact on parents of feeding young children with congenital or acquired cardiac disease.

Feeding an infant is an interactive process that facilitates social, emotional and culturally based skills. Children with congenital or acquired cardiac disease frequently require supportive regimes with regard to feeding so as to maintain weight, resulting in altered experiences for both the child and family. This study evaluated the practical, emotional and social ramifications for parents, of having a child with cardiac disease who also experienced difficulties with oral feeding. The study sampled three groups of parents who had children less than 3 years of age: those with cardiac disease

Feeding problems in infancy and early childhood: evolutionary concept analysis.

AIM: The aim of this study was to report an analysis of the concept of pediatric feeding problems. BACKGROUND: Reviews of the literature on pediatric feeding problems and disorders repeatedly reference the lack of a shared conceptualization of feeding problems. It is difficult to track aetiology, prevalence and incidence of a phenomenon when available definitions and diagnoses lack practical utility. DESIGN: An evolutionary concept analysis. DATA SOURCES: A search was conducted in October 2014 of Google Scholar, CINAHL, PubMed and Web of Science databases, with MeSH terms and key words incl

The effect of the administration of three different antimicrobial premix formulations via the liquid feeding system on the occurrence of Enterobacteriaceae resistant to tetracycline in the liquid feed for pigs.

The oral group treatment is still a common procedure in swine production. This project studied the effect of the application of 3 different formulations of antimicrobial premixes (1. chlortetracycline, 2. chlortetracycline + sulfadimidine + tylosin, 3. sulfadimidine + sulfathiazole + trimethoprim) via the liquid feeding system on the occurrence of tetracycline-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (Ent-Tetr) in the liquid feed. 156 and 112 feed samples were collected between April and December 2015 in 13 case and 14 control farms, respectively. The 27 farms were randomly selected pig fattening farms lo

Influence of different systems of feeding in the appearance of cryptosporidiosis in goat kids.

This study evaluated how different systems of feeding may influence the appearance, maintenance, or both of cryptosporidial infection. Animals reared with natural lactation, a traditional artificial feeding system, and a variety of the latter were studied for oocysts in feces. The diagnosis was made by examination of fecal smears stained with auramine-O. Morbidity and mortality were high, particularly in farms with bad hygienic conditions and natural feeding systems. The traditional artificial feeding system is not enough to reduce the presence of parasites. Isolation of newborns at birth and

Intestinal epithelium integrity after delayed onset of nutrition in broiler chickens.

Fasting older broiler chickens (>7 d of age) enlarges the intestinal tight junction (TJ) pore size, resulting in high paracellular intestinal permeability. Broiler chickens often do not receive feed and water (nutrition) directly after hatch, which may result in fasting up to 72 h of age. Whether perinatal fasting affects intestinal permeability is minimally studied. We therefore investigated whether delayed access to nutrition after hatch increases intestinal permeability, compared with broilers receiving early access to nutrition. Therefore, 432 hatched broilers received nutrition 72 h after

Feeding, growth, and nutrition in children with congenitally malformed hearts.

In the United States of America, approximately 40,000 infants are born annually with congenitally malformed hearts. Children with defects that require complex surgical palliation, or definitive repair, face many challenges in achieving optimal short-term and long-term growth. The presence of associated chromosomal abnormalities, cyanosis, and cardiac failure adds to the complexity and challenge. In this review, we address three themes related to feeding, growth, and nutrition of infants after neonatal cardiac surgery: nutritional challenges after chylothorax; breastfeeding after surgery; and t

A Novel Self-Retentive Obturator to Facilitate Feeding in an Infant with Cleft Palate: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Cleft lip and palate are common congenital defects with multifactorial complex etiology characterized by complete or incomplete cleft of lip, alveolus, and hard and soft palate. In infants, the main problem lies in the difficulty of suckling with frequent nasal regurgitation leading to respiratory and middle ear infections. This article presents a case report of an 8-day-old female with complete cleft of hard and soft palate who was given a novel self-retentive type feeding obturator. This obturator eliminated the need for supplementary aids to help in retention and has a simple design, is cos

Infection of Aedes aegypti with Brugia pahangi administered by enema: results of quantitative infection and loss of infective larvae during blood feeding.

A technique for infecting mosquitoes with known numbers of Brugia pahangi microfilariae by enema is described. Virtually all mosquitoes receiving three microfilariae or more by this route contained infective larvae 10 days later. Within a range of 1 to 40 microfilariae, numbers of infective larvae recovered (Y) were related to the numbers of microfilariae administered (X) by the equation log10Y=0.04 + 0.84 log10X. Mosquitoes feeding on sugar for up to 20 days did not lose a significant number of infective larvae. A blood meal 10 days after infection reduced the proportion of females still infe

Control of fasciolosis in stall-fed buffaloes by managing the feeding of rice straw.

Fasciolosis, caused by Fasciola gigantica, presents major disease and production problems, particularly in the rice producing areas of South and South-East Asia. In Nepal, buffaloes are commonly stall-fed and the most usual fodder is rice straw, which is produced in large quantities in the area. Here we describe a relatively simple way of controlling fasciolosis in these animals. We demonstrate that infectious metacercariae of F. gigantica are concentrated in the bottom part of the rice straw and that infection can be controlled by cutting the rice straw in half, and then feeding the parasite

Phenotypic plasticity and behavioral responses of dairy cattle on rotational grazing.

Heat stress is one of the most important environmental challenges faced by dairy cattle, with a deleterious effect on animal production and welfare. This research was conducted to evaluate the effects of the thermal environment on the physiological and behavioral responses of dairy cattle in a rotational picket. The research was conducted on an experimental farm, located in the Agreste region of the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. The animals were managed in a rotational picket system of signal grass, with an occupation and a rest period of 7 and 28 days, respectively, for a stocking rate of 3.2

Promoting Breast Milk Nutrition in Infants With Cleft Lip and/or Palate.

BACKGROUND: The orofacial defect of cleft lip/palate (CL/P) involves an altered physiological anatomy that affects the infant's feeding ability. Infants have cleft lip (CL), cleft palate (CP), or both (CL/P). Dysfunction in the seal, as with cleft lip, or in the ability to coordinate muscle movement to generate negative pressure, as with cleft palate, leads to feeding issues that may compromise growth and affect bonding. PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to present (1) scientific evidence that supports clinical feeding practices for the infant with CL/P and (2) teaching strategies for s

Effect of feeding cows in early lactation with diets differing in roughage-neutral detergent fiber content on intake behavior, rumination, and milk production.

This study measured the effects of including soyhulls as partial roughage replacement in total mixed rations (TMR) fed to 25 pairs of cows during early lactation, on the dry matter (DM) intake, particle kinetics, rumination, in vivo DM and NDF digestibility, milk and FCM yields, and BW changes. The 2 diets used in this study differed in the content of roughage and roughage NDF [23.5 vs. 35.0%, and 12.8 vs. 18.7% in the experimental (EXP) and control (CON) TMR, respectively]. The EXP TMR contained 20.5% less physically effective NDF than the CON TMR (11.7 vs. 14.1% of DM, respectively). These d

Feeding strategies and necrotizing enterocolitis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To update clinical trials concerning feeding strategies or feeding interventions to prevent necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). RECENT FINDINGS: The overall incidence of NEC remains unchanged. Several studies have shown that it is safe to use small feeding volumes early in life even in selected circumstances, such as feeding during the use of indomethacin to treat symptomatic patent ductus arteriosus. Although descriptive case reports have linked some feeding interventions such as thickened feedings to NEC, there is no evidence to establish a causal relation. Interestingly, on
