Immunoelectrophoretic characterization and cross-reactivity of Rochalimaea henselae, Rochalimaea quintana and Afipia felis.

The soluble antigens of Rochalimaea henselae, Rochalimaea quintana and Afipia felis were characterized by crossed immunoelectrophoresis using bacterial sonicates as antigens against pooled hyperimmune rabbit sera. A precipitin pattern was drawn for each bacterium and shown to be reproducible and stable even when normal or preimmune rabbit serum was incorporated in the intermediate gel. By this technique 56 antigens were identified from R. henselae, 49 from R. quintana, and 39 from A. felis. The serological cross-reaction between R. henselae, R. quintana and A. felis, and between these 3 bacter

Proteinase K-sensitive and filterable phagosome-lysosome fusion inhibiting factor in Afipia felis.

Afipia felis is one of the putative agents of cat scratch disease (CSD). Its intracellular location was previously demonstrated in tissue sections. It has been recently grown in human monocytes and in HeLa cells. We report that A. felis may infect human macrophages and the P 388 D1 murine macrophage cell line, yet is unable to grow in the cell-free culture medium. In both human macrophages and P 388 D1, the organisms multiply in a vacuole after active inhibition of phagosome-lysosome fusion (P-L) as demonstrated with cationized ferritin-labeled lysosomes. This P-L fusion inhibition is diffusab

Intracellular growth of Afipia felis, a putative etiologic agent of cat scratch disease.

The organism Afipia felis, which is though to be an etiologic agent of cat scratch disease, is a gram-negative rod that is clearly seen in infected tissue but is very difficult to isolate from clinical specimens; there has been only one report to date of the successful isolation and maintenance of the bacterium on artificial medium. We have found that A. felis will attach, invade via phagocytosis, and multiply intracellularly within the phagosomes of primary human monocytes and HeLa cells. Once in the cell, the bacterium appears to change morphologically, becoming longer and more pleomorphic,

Chronic bronchitis and bronchiolitis with prominent globule leukocyte infiltration in a cat with Filobacterium felis.

A 7-year-old mixed-breed cat presented with intermittent dry cough for 2 years. Histological examination of the lung biopsy revealed hyperplasia of bronchial and bronchiolar epithelium, and intraepithelial infiltration of globule leukocytes in many bronchi, bronchioles, and terminal bronchioles. Lymphoid aggregates cuffed airways, respiratory bronchioles, and alveolar ducts. Terminal airway inflammation was associated with type II pneumocyte hyperplasia within adjacent alveoli. Warthin-Starry stain revealed numerous argyrophilic and filamentous bacilli that were interspersed or clustered with

Antimicrobial susceptibility and genomic determinants of resistance and virulence in Mycoplasma cynos and Mycoplasma felis.

Mycoplasma cynos and Mycoplasma felis are important respiratory pathogens in dogs and cats. Due to the challenges of culturing these fastidious bacteria, little is known about their antimicrobial susceptibility or mechanisms of pathogenicity. Treatment is typically empirical, as in vitro antimicrobial activity has not been evaluated, and therapeutic efficacy remains unclear. This study aimed to assess in vitro susceptibility and identify genetic markers of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and virulence in M. cynos and M. felis clinical isolates. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for doxyc

Assessment of lotilaner (Credelio® CAT) for control of in-home Ctenocephalides felis infestations.

BACKGROUND: Flea infestations remain a major issue in veterinary medicine. Highly effective flea control for dogs and cats remains the foundation for eliminating infestations from homes and improving skin conditions associated with flea-feeding. METHODS: Homes with pet cats were screened by flea-history questionnaire. Qualifying homes were subselected into "high" (≥ 5 fleas on ≥ 1 cat, and ≥ 5 fleas collected in environmental flea traps over a 16-24 h period), "low" (< 5 fleas on all cats, < 5 in traps), and "no" homes (no evidence of fleas on cats or traps). All cats and dogs in a household

Endoparasites of peritoneal organs and skeletal muscles of the European wildcat (Felis silvestris) in Germany.

BACKGROUND: For several decades, the European wildcat (Felis silvestris) has gradually been returning to the forests of Germany, mainly in the central and southwestern regions. To increase the knowledge about this threatened species, the endoparasite status of dead found specimens from Germany was surveyed. METHODS: A total of 118 wildcats were examined for endoparasites in peritoneal organs and skeletal muscles. Owing to decomposition or incomplete carcasses, 104 gastrointestinal tracts (stomachs and intestines), 101 livers with gallbladders, 99 urinary bladders, as well as kidneys of 95 and

Expression of oxytocin receptors and oxytocin assisted electroejaculation in the domestic cat (Felis catus).

Oxytocin is a peptide hormone that mainly functions to control the contractility of smooth muscles and sex-related steroidogenesis in male reproductive tracts. However, specific information concerning this hormone in controlling the reproductive organs of cats is limited. This study aimed to investigate the expression of oxytocin receptors (OTRs) and their signal mediator via prostacyclin synthase (PTGIS) in reproductive structures following oxytocin assisted electroejaculation. In Experiment 1, the testis, cauda epididymis and vas deferens from five cats were examined by immunohistochemistry

Intra- and Extra-articular Features of Temporomandibular Joint Ankylosis in the Cat (Felis catus).

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis is an uncommon clinical entity in human and veterinary medicine. However, the condition is severely debilitating and is life-limiting if not treated. This study sought to characterize the intra- and extra-articular features of naturally occurring TMJ ankylosis in cats. TMJs from client-owned cats (n = 5) that underwent bilateral TMJ gap arthroplasty were examined and compared with TMJs from healthy, age-matched feline cadavers (n = 2) by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), micro-computed tomography (μCT) and histologically. Features of bilateral intra-

Molecular evidence for the presence of Rickettsia Felis in the feces of wild-living African apes.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: Rickettsia felis is a common emerging pathogen detected in mosquitoes in sub-Saharan Africa. We hypothesized that, as with malaria, great apes may be exposed to the infectious bite of infected mosquitoes and release R. felis DNA in their feces. METHODS: We conducted a study of 17 forest sites in Central Africa, testing 1,028 fecal samples from 313 chimpanzees, 430 gorillas and 285 bonobos. The presence of rickettsial DNA was investigated by specific quantitative real-time PCR. Positive results were confirmed by a second PCR using primers and a probe targeting a specific gene for R

Morphological and molecular characterisation of a mixed Cryptosporidium muris/Cryptosporidium felis infection in a cat.

To date Cryptosporidium muris has been identified by microscopy and genotyping in cats in two studies. We report morphological and genetic evidence of a mixed C. muris and C. felis infection in a cat and provide the first histological, immunohistochemical, in situ hybridisation and genetic confirmation of a C. muris infection in the stomach of a cat. The cat suffered persistent diarrhoea after the initial consultation, which remained unresolved, despite several medical interventions. Further studies are required to determine the range, prevalence and clinical impact of Cryptosporidium species

Cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis clade 'Sydney') are dominant fleas on dogs and cats in New South Wales, Australia: Presence of flea-borne Rickettsia felis, Bartonella spp. but absence of Coxiella burnetii DNA.

The cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) is the most common flea species parasitising both domestic cats and dogs globally. Fleas are known vectors of zoonotic pathogens such as vector-borne Rickettsia spp. and Bartonella spp. and could theoretically transmit Coxiella burnetii, the causative agent of Q fever. A total of 107 fleas were collected from 21 cats and 14 dogs in veterinary clinics, a feline rescue organisation and a grooming salon in New South Wales, Australia, to undergo PCR detection of Bartonella spp., Rickettsia spp. and C. burnetii DNA. Morphological identification confirmed that th

From Acquisition to Transmission: Revisiting Bartonella henselae Infection in the Cat Flea (Ctenocephalides felis).

BACKGROUND: The cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) is the primary arthropod vector responsible for the transmission of Bartonella henselae, the etiologic agent of cat scratch disease. Although domestic cats serve as the principal reservoir host, maintaining long-term intraerythrocytic bacteremia, the spread of B. henselae within feline populations relies entirely on flea-mediated acquisition and transmission. Early work demonstrated that fleas readily acquire the bacterium while feeding on bacteremic cats and can subsequently infect naïve hosts; however, the underlying biological mechanisms rema
