Non-ossifying fibroma (NOF), which occasionally results in pathologic fracture, is considered the most common benign and self-limiting lesion of the growing skeleton. By DNA sequencing we have identified hotspot KRAS, FGFR1 and NF1 mutations in 48 of 59 patients (81.4%) with NOF, at allele frequencies ranging from 0.04 to 0.61. Our findings define NOF as a genetically driven neoplasm caused in most cases by activated MAP-kinase signalling. Interestingly, this driving force either diminishes over time or at least is not sufficient to prevent autonomous regression and resolution. Beyond its cont

Juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF) is a rare, benign, locally aggressive entity of the extragnathic craniofacial bones with a high tendency towards recurrence. Two distinctive microscopic patterns of juvenile ossifying fibroma have been described: a trabecular juvenile ossifying fibroma (TrJOF) and a psammomatoid juvenile ossifying fibroma (PJOF). Psammomatoid variant is predominantly a craniofacial lesion and occurs rarely in the jaws. The pathognomonic histopathologic feature is the presence of spherical ossicles, which are similar to psammoma bodies. Aneurysmal bone cyst exists as a secondary

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to present the clinical and histopathological evaluation of reactive gingival lesions, such as peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG) and peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF), as exemplified in two cases.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION AND INTERVENTION: A 12- and a 13-year-old girl were referred to the Department of Pedodontics, both complaining of a painless swelling mass. After histopathological evaluation, the lesions were diagnosed as PGCG and POF. These gingival enlargements were totally resected after adequate clinical and radiological examinations. No recurre

Ossifying fibroma (OF) is a fibro-osseous tumor that usually occurs in young people and arises in the craniofacial bones. We report a case of a 15-year-old boy who developed progressive proptosis and hypertelorism and was found to have a mid-face and skull base tumor, initially diagnosed as psammomatoid meningioma. The tumor recurred and the resected specimen revealed a unique OF having trabecular and psammomatoid features. The clinical, radiographic, histopathologic findings and differential diagnoses of the case are presented.

A 12-year-old-girl presented with a fracture of an osteolytic lesion of the distal radius. A 7-year-old girl presented with a fracture of an osteolytic lesion of the femoral shaft. In both cases it was a non-ossifying fibroma with fracture misdiagnosed at pathology as aneurysmal bone cyst. Fractures through non-ossifying fibromas may alter the histological pattern of the initial lesion in two ways: firstly, by the presence of blood pigments due to the fracture, and secondly, by formation of new bone. Radiological-pathological correlation is essential to avoid histological errors after patholog

Ossifying fibroma is a benign fibro-osseous neoplasm predominantly affecting young females, characterized by replacement of normal bone with fibrous tissue containing mineralized material. While smaller lesions can be managed conservatively, extensive lesions require resection to minimize recurrence. We report a 27-year-old female presenting with a large ossifying fibroma involving the right mandibular ramus, angle, and body. Clinical examination revealed facial asymmetry with firm, non-tender swelling, and buccal cortical expansion. Computed tomography demonstrated a well-defined, expansile l

BACKGROUND: Gingival hyperplasias are peculiar conditions that may produce extreme growth that impairs masticatory function and causes psychological and aesthetic disturbances. They can vary from mild interdental papillae localized growth to marked swelling affecting both jaws.
CASE PRESENTATION: The aim of this case report is to present a rare case of generalized gingival growth diagnosed in a 4 year-old Caucasian child and followed for 9 years. The lesion covered almost all of the upper and lower teeth and recurred thirty times with the same clinical and histopathological aspects. The clini

ABSTRACT: COVID-19 led to a massive shutdown of businesses in the second quarter of 2020. Estimates from the Current Population Survey, for example, indicate that the number of active business owners dropped by 22% from February to April 2020. We provide the first analysis of losses in sales among the universe of businesses in California using administrative data from the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Losses in taxable sales average 17% in the second quarter of 2020 relative to the second quarter of 2019 even though year-over-year sales typically grow by 3-4%. We find th

We report a case of ossifying fibroma of the long bones (OFLB). This lesion, occurring mainly during the first decade of life, typically affects the tibial diaphysis and clinically presents as a painless bony enlargement. Radiographic features include an osteolytic cortical expansion, containing diffuse calcifications, and separated from the medullary by a thick cortical rim. CT appears to be the examination of choice to define these signs and permits differentiation from monostotic fibrous dysplasia and from adamantinoma (by demonstrating the presence or absence of diffuse high attenuation va

A 9-year-old boy who had had painless progressive proptosis of the right eye for 18 months, initially diagnosed as fibrous dysplasia, was found to have a circumscribed mass involving the frontal bone in the roof of the orbit. Biopsy of the mass led to the diagnosis of juvenile ossifying fibroma and the tumor was removed by a craniotomy approach. One year after surgery, the child appeared to be healthy. Ossifying fibroma can sometimes be differentiated from fibrous dysplasia both clinically and by computed tomography. Ossifying fibroma usually appears between the ages of 7 and 28 years and prod

Non-ossifying fibroma (NOF) and central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) are both benign tumours of bone with overlapping morphology and similar mutations in the RAS/MAPK pathway. However, NOF is located in the long bones with regression after puberty in contrast to CGCG which is located in the jaw bones and does not regress spontaneously. We hypothesised that endocrine regulation by oestrogen plays a role in the spontaneous regression in NOF. Therefore, we examined the expression of ERα in a series of NOF and CGCG. ERα expression (EP1) was determined using immunohistochemistry on 16 NOFs (whole sl

We present the case of an 18-yr-old female with 4 mo of progressive vision loss in the left eye. She underwent a computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which revealed a large mass in the sphenoid sinus, sella, and anterior cranial fossa. This mass was T1 isointense, with heterogenous enhancement noted on T1 with gadolinium sequences. The mass was found to have calcifications and cystic portions on T2-weighted MRI scans and CT-based imaging. She underwent an endonasal endoscopic approach for resection of the mass. The tumor was found to be bloody, with islands of bone ne

BACKGROUND: A phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor (PMT) is classified into four histological subtypes: mixed connective tissue, osteoblast-like, non-ossifying fibroma-like, and ossifying fibroma-like. The ossifying fibroma-like subtype being extremely rare. Most PMTs are benign, with a minimal number becoming malignant after recurrence. In this study, we report a case of recurrence and malignant transformation of PMT-ossifying fibroma-like subtype in the left hip bone.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report the clinical manifestations, histology, pathological features, and treatment of a 57-year-old C

Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are an uncommon osteolytic intraosseous bone lesions. ABCs commonly involve metaphysis of long bones and are rarely diagnosed in craniofacial bones. The World Health Organization (WHO) designates ABCs as benign, but locally destructive, rapidly growing masses. ABC can be clinically misdiagnosed as a malignant tumor. In this article, we present a case of a 12-year-old female patient who presented to a maxillofascial outpatient clinic complaining of huge jaw swelling over the past 3 months, which was clinically suggestive of sarcoma. Few reported cases in the English

Tumour-induced osteomalacia is a paraneoplastic syndrome wherein bone is affected by a hormone from a tumour that causes renal phosphate wasting and hypophosphataemia. Here, we present the case of a 31-year-old man who has been suffering from generalised bone pains and a spine deformity that led to loss of height. Pertinent findings are low serum phosphorus, low vitamin D and decreased bone mineral density. These findings led to a diagnosis of osteomalacia. However, the finding of an oral mass raised some questions as to what role it plays in the patient's disease. It was suspected that the or

Juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF) is an uncommon, benign, bone-forming neoplasm seen in the craniofacial bones. It is distinguished from other fibro-osseous lesions primarily by its age at onset, clinical presentation, and potential aggressive behavior. Occasionally JOF may grow aggressively and extend to involve the orbits and skull base, resulting in serious cosmetic and functional problems. A radical surgery is not advisable in a pediatric age group. We describe a case of JOF of the maxilla removed by sublabial approach conservatively, but completely without compromising the aesthetic looks

Juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF) is an uncommon, benign, bone-forming neoplasm with an aggressive local growth that is distinguished from other fibro-osseous lesions primarily by its age of onset, clinical presentation and aggressive behaviour. JOF is considered as a variant of the ossifying fibroma (OF) and the former includes psammomatoid JOF (PsJOF) and Trabecular JOF (TrJOF). Both variants involve the craniofacial bones with the trabecular variant being more common in the jaws and the psammomatoid variant being more common in the craniofacial skeleton. PsJOF is an unique variant of JOF tha

Cemento-ossifying fibroma, also known as ossifying fibroma, usually occurs in the mandible and less commonly in the maxilla. The huge example in the skull base is even rare. We present a case of a huge cemento-ossifying fibroma arising below the skull base of a 30-year-old woman patient. Radiologic investigations showed a giant, lobulated, heterogeneous calcified hard tissue mass, which is well circumscribed and is a mixture of radiolucent and radiopaque, situated at the rear of the right maxilla to the middle skull base. The tumor expands into the right maxillary sinus and the orbital cavity,

Fibrous dysplasia and ossifying fibroma are locally destructive and deforming benign lesions that can occur anywhere in the craniofacial skeleton, including the paranasal sinuses. Differentiation between these two diseases is essential because of their differing natural histories, and distinctions must be made by correlating clinical information with radiological and histological findings. The cases of fibrous dysplasia and ossifying fibroma described in this report illustrate the subtle differences between these two fibroosseous lesions. Emphasis is placed on the differing natural history and
