OBJECTIVE: To compare the hemostatic effects and tourniquet induced side reactions of 2 different tourniquets in internal fixation of bilateral tibia and fibula fracture.
METHODS: Between May 2008 and May 2010, 21 patients with bilateral tibia and fibula fracture were treated and randomly divided into 2 groups according to left and right limbs. When steel plate fixation was performed, equilibrium pressure pneumatic tourniquet (EPPT group) and common tourniquet (common group) were used to staunch the flow of blood respectively. The time of using tourniquet was 60 minutes, and the hemostatic pr

Distal tibia fractures remain difficult injuries to treat when fracture displacement precludes non-operative treatment. Different methods of treatment including limited internal fixation with external fixation, as well as open reduction and internal fixation have been recommended. Open reduction and internal fixation is often favored for the improved ability to anatomically reduce displaced fractures, particularly articular fractures. However, wound complications due to the associated trauma to the fragile soft tissue envelope in this region continue to be a significant concern. The authors pre

Background and Objectives: Ankle fractures are common and occur in up to 25% of cases with posterior malleolus (PM) involvement. The gold standard for their treatment considers posterior approaches and plating of both the PM and fibula. However, in elderly and comorbid patients, this strategy remains controversial. The objective of this biomechanical study was to compare a minimally invasive fixation-utilizing a fibula nail and percutaneous anteroposterior (AP) screws-versus double plating. Materials and Methods: An oblique fibula fracture associated with a Haraguchi type 1 PM fracture was rep

BACKGROUND: About 20% of proximal humerus fractures (PHFs) are unstable and/or markedly displaced and therefore require surgery. Locking plate fixation after anatomical reduction has become the current treatment of choice for these fractures in the active population. However, studies have shown complication rates up to 36%, such as loss of reduction and avascular necrosis. To date, data from literature are inconclusive on outcomes following the use of an intramedullary fibula allograft in PHFs, possibly due to the case mix. It is hypothesized that the use of a fibula allograft is beneficial to

INTRODUCTION: Valid epidemiological data about distal fibular fractures and their treatment strategies are missing. Innovative osteosynthesis techniques were introduced and improved during the past 15 years. The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiologic development and the implementation of new treatment strategies in a nationwide register in Germany over a period of 15 years.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data of the German Federal Statistical Office from 2005 until 2019 were screened. Adults with a fracture of the distal fibula were included. Data were separated for gender, age and tr

BACKGROUND: Post-radiation fractures (PRF) are a recognised complication of radiation treatment for soft tissue sarcomas. They have a low incidence and typically occur up to 5 years following treatment, more commonly affecting the pelvis, ribs and femur. Due to radiation-induced changes in bone, PRFs typically require more complicated intervention compared to post-trauma fractures, however, limited literature exists, particularly in regards to mid-shaft femoral PRFs. We report a case of a mid-shaft femoral PRF managed with a modified onlay free vascularised fibular grafting (FVFG).

Locoregional anesthetic techniques may be a very useful tool for the anesthetic management of wallabies with injuries of the pelvic limbs and may help to prevent capture myopathies resulting from stress and systemic opioids' administration. This report describes the use of ultrasound-guided femoral and sciatic nerve blocks in Bennett's wallaby (Macropus rufogriseus) referred for orthopaedic surgery. Ultrasound-guided femoral and sciatic nerve blocks were attempted at the femoral triangle and proximal thigh level, respectively. Whilst the sciatic nerve could be easily visualised, the femoral ne

INTRODUCTION: There is a lack of consensus regarding indications for fibula fixation in pilon fractures. Reduction of the fibula fracture can assist with restoring lateral column length and reduction of the tibial plafond during pilon ORIF. However, there are theoretical concerns with wound complications and soft tissue insult. The purpose of this study is to compare short-term outcome measures after tibial plafond ORIF with and without supplemental fibula fixation using a validated national database.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The American College of Surgeons' NSQIP database was utilized to iden

UNLABELLED: Ankle fractures are one of the most common lower limb fractures, representing a significant portion of the trauma workload. Marked proportion of these is isolated intraarticular lateral malleolus fractures. Anatomical reduction and rigid internal fixation using lag screw (interfragmentary screw) to provide interfragmentary compression has remained the choice of treatment in selected lateral malleolus fractures. Applying interfragmentary compression screw from anterior to the posterior surface of the fibula has been the traditional method of performing this. In this article, we desc

BACKGROUND: In the treatment of distal-third tibia/fibula fractures treated by interlocking nailing, the role of fibular fixation is not clearly defined. This study aimed to assess the benefits of fibular fixation in such fractures.
METHODS: Sixty patients with fractures of the lower third of the leg were enrolled into the study and divided into two groups based on whether the fibula was fixed (group A) or not (group B). Fracture tibia was treated with interlocked intramedullary nailing and fibular fixation was done using a 3.5-mm Limited Contact Dynamic Compression Plate (LC-DCP). The two gr

Ankle fractures are a significant part of the lower extremity trauma seen in the emergency department. Neurologic complications of ankle fracture surgery are infrequently described but account for significant morbidity. The risk of nerve injury is increased for the Blair and Botte type B pattern of the intermediate cutaneous dorsal nerve branch, crossing the distal fibula from posterior to anterior (at 5 to 7 cm from malleolar tip). This pattern is present in about 10% to 15% of patients. Injuries to the superficial peroneal nerve and its branches negatively influence the outcome. Early recogn

We report a case of spontaneous intrauterine fracture of the right tibia and fibula in an otherwise healthy fetus at 20 weeks of gestation. The fracture healed in utero in an abnormal position. Postnatal development of the baby was normal with spontaneous correction of the angulation, and no underlying disease could be discovered. Spontaneous isolated fetal fractures are rare and need to be differentiated from fractures that occur due to trauma or underlying skeletal diseases.

BACKGROUND: Lateral ankle injuries are one of the most common musculoskeletal injuries sustained by pediatric and adolescent athletes. These injuries can result in significant time lost from competition, affect performance when returning to play, and represent a significant burden on the health care system as a whole. The purpose of this study was to systematically review the literature on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of acute lateral ankle injuries and their chronic effects in pediatric and adolescent athletes (younger than 19 y).
METHODS: This systematic review was conducted acc
