Surfactant replacement therapy--economic impact.

Surfactant replacement is an effective treatment for neonatal respiratory distress syndrome. (RDS). As widespread use of surfactant is becoming a reality, it is important to assess the economic implications of this new form of therapy. A comparison study was carried out at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Northwest Armed Forces Hospital, Saudi Arabia. Among 75 infants who received surfactant for RDS and similar number who were managed during time period just before the surfactant was available, but by set criteria would have made them eligible for surfactant. All other management mod

ASAS-NANP SYMPOSIUM: MATHEMATICAL MODELING IN ANIMAL NUTRITION: The Evolution of Large Language Models and Their Impact on Animal Sciences.

The rapid rise of large language models (LLM) is reshaping the scientific landscape, transitioning from early statistical language models to advanced transformer-based architectures capable of synthesizing knowledge across disciplines. While their predictive capacity and scalability have opened new avenues in data analysis, hypothesis generation, and decision support, concerns remain regarding bias, hallucination, reproducibility, and ethical governance. In animal sciences, LLM are gradually applied to challenges in nutrition modeling, animal health, genetic selection, and sustainability. Prec

Quality of life and childhood atopic dermatitis: the misery of living with childhood eczema.

The misery of living with atopic eczema (syn. dermatitis, AD) cannot be overstated for it may have a profoundly negative effect on the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of children and their family unit in many cases. As it is one of the commonest chronic relapsing childhood dermatosis (UK lifetime prevalence 16-20% by 20 years), with increasing worldwide prevalence, this has major social and financial implications for individuals, healthcare providers and society as a whole. This review explores the impact of AD on the lives of children and their family units and the use of some of the r

Artificial Intelligence-Driven Sensing of Cross-Border Trade Risks Through Declaration-to-Physical-Fact Alignment and Evidence-Grounded Question Answering.

Cross-border trade security risks are often embedded in inconsistencies among trade documents, logistics trajectories, hardware sensor states, and financial settlement activities. Existing methods primarily rely on structured declaration fields, making it difficult to verify digital declarations against actual physical processes or to generate complete evidence suitable for regulatory review. To address these challenges, TradeSense-EQA is proposed as a cross-border trade security anomaly detection and evidence-grounded English question-answering framework. Multisource sensing information, incl

Paediatric Audiology: An analysis of stakeholder perspectives on advancement in Early Hearing Detection and Intervention for deaf infants in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) plays a critical role in improving language, cognitive, and socio-emotional outcomes for infants with hearing loss. In Nigeria, however, EHDI implementation remains limited by fragmented service delivery, uneven technological capacity, and sociocultural factors that delay timely diagnosis. This study explored the perspectives of paediatric audiologists and parents to provide a comprehensive understanding of the opportunities and challenges influencing early hearing care across diverse Nigerian settings. METHODS: A mixed-methods desig

Effective non-drug interventions for improving outcomes and quality of maternal health care in sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Many interventions have been implemented to improve maternal health outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Currently, however, systematic information on the effectiveness of these interventions remains scarce. We conducted a systematic review of published evidence on non-drug interventions that reported effectiveness in improving outcomes and quality of care in maternal health in SSA. METHODS: African Journals Online, Bioline, MEDLINE, Ovid, Science Direct, and Scopus databases were searched for studies published in English between 2000 and 2015 and reporting on the effectiveness o

The cost of preventable conditions in adults with spina bifida.

Adults with spina bifida are at risk of developing secondary health conditions that are causally related to the primary condition and are to some degree preventable. By investigating preventable secondary conditions in adults with spina bifida, we can determine the burden of care that might be reduced if preventive strategies were developed. We audited hospitalizations of adults with spina bifida to gain insight into serious secondary conditions in this population. We reviewed all admissions of adults with spina bifida to a large American tertiary care center (Johns Hopkins Hospital; Baltimore

Integration of stepped care for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders among women attending maternal and child health clinics in Kenya: Protocol for a cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMAD) cause substantial morbidity and mortality globally. Kenya, like many low- and middle-income countries, experiences severe shortage of specialized mental healthcare workers and poor coverage of screening and management for PMAD. Provision of screening and treatment by lay and non-specialist providers in the context of routine maternal child health services may enhance access to mental health services and improve outcomes. Community- and individual-level correlates of HIV incidence in HPTN 071 (PopART).

INTRODUCTION: Universal HIV testing and treatment aims to identify all people living with HIV and offer them treatment, decreasing the number of individuals with unsuppressed HIV and thus reducing HIV transmission. Longitudinal follow-up of individuals with and without HIV in a cluster-randomized trial of communities allowed for the examination of community- and individual-level measures of HIV risk and HIV incidence. METHODS: HPTN 071 (PopART) was a three-arm cluster-randomized trial conducted between 2013 and 2018 that evaluated the use of two combination HIV prevention strategies implement

The effect of an economic empowerment and relationship strengthening intervention on food insecurity among couples living with HIV in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: People living with HIV (PLHIV) are highly impacted by food insecurity through pathways including poor adherence to antiretroviral therapy and inadequate nutrition. Limited evidence exists on whether economic empowerment interventions can improve food insecurity among PLHIV in sub-Saharan Africa. We evaluated the effectiveness of Mlambe, an economic empowerment and relationship-strengthening intervention, on food insecurity among couples living with HIV who drink alcohol in Malawi. METHODS: We analyzed data from 78 couples who participated in the Mlambe study, implemented in Zomba,

Somewhere to go: assessing the impact of public restroom interventions on reports of open defecation in San Francisco, California from 2014 to 2020.

BACKGROUND: Open defecation due to a lack of access to sanitation facilities remains a public health issue in the United States. People experiencing homelessness face barriers to accessing sanitation facilities, and are often forced to practice open defecation on streets and sidewalks. Exposed feces may contain harmful pathogens posing a significant threat to public health, especially among unhoused persons living near open defecation sites. The City of San Francisco's Department of Public Works implemented the Pit Stop Program to provide the unhoused and the general public with improved acces

BACKGROUND: Inadvertent perioperative hypothermia, a common complication secondary to anaesthesia and surgical exposure, affects patients globally and is associated with adverse outcomes. Interventions to prevent perioperative normothermia include consistent core temperature monitoring and active warming strategies. Forced-air warming is the key active warming strategy recommended in guidelines and requires consistent perioperative application to prevent hypothermia. Implementation of guidelines varies across the Asian Australasian Regional Section (AARS), characterised by diverse healthcare s

Physician Payment Reform in Interventional Pain Management: Balancing Cost, Quality, Access, and Survival of Independent Practices.

On July 14, 2025, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released the 2026 Physician Proposed Payment Rule aimed at reducing wasteful spending, enhancing quality measures, improving chronic disease management, and protecting independent practices from systemic financial pressures that have favored large healthcare systems and plagued independent practices. The goals are admirable, but the proposed measures with uniform reductions of 2.5% in physician payments based on efficiency adjustments apply across the board to all physicians. Further, practice expense (PE) reductions of 4%

A Retrospective Analysis of Hand Conditions Treated Using the Wide Awake Local Anesthesia No Tourniquet (WALANT) Technique at a Teaching Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal trauma remains on the rise, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Hand injuries are equally prevalent, with patients in LMICs being 5 to 10 times more likely to be affected. Patients who sustain hand injuries are at risk of experiencing temporary or permanent loss of hand function, severely impacting activities of daily living. Early treatment intervention can reduce the risk of long-term disability. The Wide Awake Local Anesthesia No Tourniquet (WALANT) technique, since its development, has revolutionized hand surgery with reported benefits. Our

Insights into Integrated Lead Generation and Target Identification in Malaria and Tuberculosis Drug Discovery.

New, safe and effective drugs are urgently needed to treat and control malaria and tuberculosis, which affect millions of people annually. However, financial return on investment in the poor settings where these diseases are mostly prevalent is very minimal to support market-driven drug discovery and development. Moreover, the imminent loss of therapeutic lifespan of existing therapies due to evolution and spread of drug resistance further compounds the urgency to identify novel effective drugs. However, the advent of new public-private partnerships focused on tropical diseases and the recent
